Michael Schumacher has spurned Ferrari’s pleas for him to become their £5million-a-year Grand Prix race boss.

His sensational knockback, kept secret until now, staggered the Italian team’s hierarchy.

Schuey told them he preferred to focus on his new passion ... motorbike racing at 200-plus mph.

Formula One figurehead Bernie Ecclestone, a long-time admirer of Schuey’s, said: “To put this in perspective, it’s a bit like David Beckham turning down the chance to manage Manchester United.”

The seven-times world champion – five of his titles won in a Ferrari – was courted by Luca Montezemolo, the company supremo, to take the job at the start of this season.

Frenchman Jean Todt, Schuey’s team mastermind in his title run, announced he was stepping down and his role was offered to the German ace.

But by then Schumacher, now 39, was enjoying the thrills and spills of his homeland motorbike racing championship.

Despite regularly crashing out this season, he plans to take it up even more seriously next year.

So instead of taking the main job at Ferrari, he opted for a less demanding position as an advisor to the team, sitting occasionally on the pitwall and playing mentor to Brazilian driver Felipe Massa.

And the team manager’s job was given to Stefano Domenicali, a popular figure around the Ferrari paddock.

Schuey, who pocketed around £900m from his spectacular, record-breaking career, revealed: “Yes, I had the chance to do what Jean Todt had been doing – to become a director of Ferrari for the racing part of the company.”

Back at his Swiss lakeside mansion, he talked the offer over with his wife, the mother of their two children.

She would have preferred him to accept and abandon his dangerous superbike racing ambitions.

But he hated the idea of being stuck in an office, a crucial part of the responsiblity.

“I saw how much passion and dedication Jean put into the job – just like I did in the car – and it was awesome,” he said.

“But far too often he was just sitting behind his desk in Maranello, day after day, even at weekends and late into the night.

“I said to myself, ‘Do I need this?’ My answer was, and is, simply no. Not at all.”

Raikkonen terpantas dalam ujian

PARIS - Pemandu pasukan Ferrari dari Finland, Kimi Raikkonen mencatat masa terpantas dalam ujian Formula Satu di Litar Bahrain, kelmarin.

Raikkonen merakamkan satu pusingan terbaik, 1 minit 32.102 saat daripada 107 pusingan yang dibuatnya, iaitu lebih pantas daripada Jarno Trulli, pelumba Toyota dan pemandu Sauber, Nick Heidfeld.

Malah, masa Raikkonen kelmarin merupakan pusingan terpantas sejak tiga pasukan memulakan ujian di litar itu, minggu lalu.

Trulli mencatatkan 1:32.230 daripada 149 pusingannya dengan kereta baru 2009.

Dia yang menggambarkan kereta baru itu berdaya saing dan boleh diharapkan, menambah: "Ia memberikan kami satu asas kukuh musim ini.'' - AFP
