Deglamourised Divas
What抯 it about a Plain Jane that is attracting our modern day beauties in Bollywood?
Every diva, right from Urmila Matondkar to Bipasha Basu and from Aishwarya Rai to Kareena Kapoor is going de-glam for their roles.
Urmila, known for her ultra-chic appearances and attitude in Rangeela and Daud, has been doing a series of no make-up roles. The process culminates for Urmila in Jahanu Baruha抯 film, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, where Urmila plays a simple straightforward middle-class girl.Says Urmila, 揂ccording to me, it抯 far easier to play deglamourised parts where you don抰 have to focus on your make-up and other paraphernalia. It抯 just you and the camera. |

Once Bollywood 'Hot'Shots: Where Are They?
Mamta Kulkarni
Mamta Kulkarni created an uproar and garnered instant fame when she appeared topless on the cover of a film glossy in 1993. She was more in news more for her sexy pictures and oomph appeal than her films. In fact in a career spanning almost ten years, the only films from her repertoire worth mentioning are 態aazi |

Stop the presses... If Stars turned publishers!
Spoof!
The newspaper war is going boom boom on the Mumbai scene. What with so many media houses trying to jump onto the newspaper bandwagon. The hoardings across town are screaming headline of a different type.
And with so much tomtomming going on, do you think our Bollywood stars will stay out of the limelight? No sir! Ever ready to bask in any light, even those of the Presses, they are quick to want a piece of the media slice. Even our 'Dhoom' stud John Abraham has announced that he wants to start a newspaper of his own. This after Ram Gopal Varma had long announced that he would launch a trade paper. But the plans of that 'company' are gathering dust.
It made us think - what if every star was to launch his/her own paper? What would their USP be? And we came up with the following...
Shah Rukh Khan: Likely name for paper 'I'm The BEST'. And whatever Badshah Khan decides to print, his newspaper will be of limited edition and complimentary for his friends.
Aamir Khan: The paper will be called 'The Perfect Paper of India'. It will also be 'lagaan' free. Of course, he will take a few years mulling over the thought, then researching all papers then getting the right get up to look like a publisher. And he will not give any interviews to his own paper, except around the time of his releases - which may be every for years.
Salman Khan: A paper called 'Lucky' will cater to the pin-up seeking college crowd with lot of topless posters. It will be picture heavy, with plenty of tips on body building, and agony aunt columns dealing with bad break-ups and 'how to stay fresh even after binging all night'. Of course, he may just sack/blast his own Editor for interfering in his private life.
Sanjay Dutt: Sanju Baba's newspaper will be the teeniest one. Since he always answers in monosyllable, his Editorial will be the shortest ever. The interviews will deal with the agony and ecstacy of freedom. The name? 'Dangerous when armed'.
Mallika Sherawat: 'The Cleav-Age' will be an ideal name for this Haryanvi bomb's newspaper. A paper that will strictly carry only sexy shots of this glam actress. It will be a bilingual, to be printed in Mandarin Chinese for Hong Kong superstars like Chan. With quotes like hers, she needs no Editors, only 'martial arts action'.
Amisha Patel: Will start her very own 'FNA' -- Family News & Analysis paper. The paper is likely to be full of her family fallouts and bust ups. It will also have a column penned by Vikram, called 'Sexy B(h)utt'.
Kareena Kapoor: The K & K' Daily is an apt name for the Kapoor and Kapur liaison. It will be a brand leader against MMS videos and will feature Shahid on every other lead picture. The content will be spiced with Bebo's breathtaking quotes.
Sunny Deol: His newspaper may be edited-printed and published in Mumbai but will be circulated only in Punjab. The paper will necessarily carry a tagline saying 慛O 'Cleav', NO 'BUTT', sirf JATT. And it will carry only LOUD HEADLINES, no body copy.

Finally, Karisma's 'negative' film
Once upon a time in Bollywood, your guess was as good as anybody's about when director Suneel Darshan's film starring Akshay Kumar, Amisha Patel and Karishma Kapoor would see light of day.
Even the director seemed clueless.
So finally, when Mere Jeevan Sathi hits theatres this Friday, it comes with a catchy tag line: 'She is back. And she is bad.'
An intriguing teaser line is one of the oldest tricks in the Bollywood book for delayed films. And what better marketing strategy than portraying Karisma Kapoor as the 'bad' girl?
Karisma claims she has never played as vicious or negative a role as she does in Mere Jeevan Saathi.
"I have never done this before," Karisma told rediff.com in May last year. "It has grey shades, but, at the same time, is very human.
Generally, our films show that everything is good in life; but not this one.
"But this is not a Shah Rukh Khan kind of Baazigar or Darr role. The film has some glamorous scenes for me," she added.
The actress, who has been missing from the big screen for quite a while now, was last seen in the television serial Karisma, which fared very poorly.
Incidentally, the delayed film saw all three stars' personal lives tumble into turmoil during the shooting.
Karisma went through a bad patch with husband Sanjay Kapoor. Amisha had a fallout with her parents over money matters. Akshay too ran into rough whether, with leaked reports of his alleged involvement with Priyanka Chopra doing the rounds.
Many thought the film would never be released.
The plot of the film goes thus:
Vicky (Akshay Kumar) is a budding pop singer madly in love with Anjali (Amisha Patel). He is completely besotted with her. But fate has other plans, and an accident sees Amisha bedridden.
Meanwhile, Vicky has already signed a contract with an international music company, and must move to Canada. Anjali persuades Vicky to put career before love, and he reluctantly leaves for Canada.
There, he meets Natasha (Karisma), chief of the music company he has signed up with. Vicky sings his way to superstardom. And he still loves and draws inspiration from Anjali.
Natasha, meanwhile, has fallen in love with Vicky. In fact, she and Vicky were college buddies, and she had a crush on him since then. Vicky and Natasha get physically intimate.
But Vicky is repentant. He carries the guilt of having betrayed Anjali. Will he go back to her, or begin a new chapter in his life?
Mere Jeevan Saathi is the second Akshay Kumar film to hit theatres this year. And it comes after the disastrous Family.
Last year, Amisha said: "The role I play is that of a very self-respecting and dignified girl. I am someone who understands that human beings can make mistakes. This film is very Indian [in flavour]. It is a pleasure to be a part of this film. You can say it is a love triangle."
Did she feel threatened working with an established actress like Karisma? "I have never felt insecure with any other actress," she said. "I cannot do all kinds of roles in films. I will get roles that suit my personality and sensibility. I won't be able to concentrate on anything if I start seeing what others are doing in their lives. Who is eating what? Who has signed which film? If I start doing that, I will not be able to do anything else."
The film has been 'in the making' for nearly three years now.
"Raja Hindustani was completed in three years and it was one of the biggest blockbusters. This film is under production for 18 months only and we hope to finish by October 2004," Karisma had defended the delay last year.
"There is no rule that a film has to be completed in three or six months. If it takes time to be complete, there is nothing wrong with it," she had added.
Will her words come true? We will know when Mere Jeevan Sathi hits theatres on February 3.

First look: Akshay & Katrina
Pretty people look good together.
Director Raj Kanwar, last seen with Andaaz a couple of years ago, now brings us Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif for the first time. And, just to make sure the attractive-actors quotient is high, Hum Ko Deewane Kar Gaye goes all out by involving the stunning Bipasha Basu.
Akshay, who had a brilliant 2005 with largely comic roles, said that 2006 was going to be all about romance.
Flanked by Kaif, who found hits in Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Sarkar, and Bips No Entry Basu, he might just have another success on his hands.
Sporting a real mouthful of a title, Hum Ko Deewane Kar Gaye is set to release in April.

Style speak with Shilpa
Shilpa Shetty, all oomph and effervescence, on skirts, films and minimalism
At times I am self-deprecating. At times I have a great sense of self-esteem. It's so many things at so many times Shilpa Shetty
One significant `B' strikes you when you see Shilpa Shetty. Hmmm... It's better we let that be for the moment. But there's yet another `B' that you slowly discover as you get talking to her. The woman so full of oomph is also very "bubbly". And she knows that. And this knowing makes her all the more hot.
Shilpa is the moment's scorcher. At 30-not-yet-something, she leaves you gaping. Who is to fault those famed legs, flat abs and racy contours? All hidden and not-yet-hidden behind the New York skirt. Shilpa Shetty is, indeed, a tight and cosy fit. She's all in place.
For Shilpa, it was a day of brown. Footwear in brown, skirt brownish, belt in brown, top in brown, time-piece in brown, handbag in brown and the rudraksha that could only have been brown.
Shilpa's brown rush must hint at her fashion and designer inclinations. We don't know how much of fashion she actually likes and knows, but she did say she likes the cut of Tarun Tahiliani and Manish Malhotra among a host of designers.
Shilpa looked relaxed. Does she like skirts a lot, you ask straightaway. "I love them!" she gushes. "I've seen everything from skirts to frocks in the movies. They are such a comfortable fit. And so minimal." Shilpa and minimal? What one would give to be her designer! We get a bit serious for a moment. She says there's a pleasant change in Bollywood these days. What's that? "It's more about characters now. It's not only about heroes and heroines. Black is a standout. It didn't have the hero feel to it and yet it was powerful. I think it is a good sign." But then the lady doesn't want to reveal too much |

Hrithik's transformation for Dhoom 2
Now that shooting for Krrish is done and over, with only post-production left, Hrithik is busy preparing himself for his next multi starrer, Dhoom 2.
Well, from the looks of it, preparing for this role hasn't been easy. On one side there was gaining weight for Krrish so that he could manage all his super hero stunts easily, on the other side he has to transform himself to play a negative character (which by the way he is playing for the first time) along with Aishwarya. This transformation consists of streaking his locks blonde and losing weight to about 12 pounds on Aditya Chopra's insistence so that he suits his character perfectly. Being a perfectionist that Duggu is, one just cannot stop marveling as to how easily he moulds himself to suit the essence and persona of his role in Dhoom 2, shooting of which begins later this week. The unit will subsequently proceed to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil for the finale.
So here's to you Mr. Hritik Roshan, we wish you all the success you deserve in everything you do.

Preity: I can buy myself anything
Preity Zinta just turned 31, and the actress is raring to go. This year sees her in Karan Johar's mega-starrer Kabhi Alvida Ne Kehna, with Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji, among others.
Then there's Shirish Kunder's Jaan-e-Man, with Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan. Right now, however, Preity is busy chilling out.
How does it feel?
Wonderful! The earlier plan was to have a great big party. But I got so engrossed in shooting Karan Johar's film that I just managed to make a guest list, and [had] no time for preparation.
So the party will happen during the weekend when everyone won't be working. I do want a party. I haven't been in the country for my recent birthdays. Thank god I'm here in Mumbai this time. I'm so happy!
How is it working with Karan?
After a long time a role I can completely connect with, and yet remain detached. I think Karan is really gifted as a writer. I can't believe how progressive his and Niranjan Iyenger's lines are.
We were constantly bouncing ideas. Karan is someone I've always looked up to. But to work with him as a director for the first time, and that too in a project very different from his style, is a unique experience. The vibes on the sets with Amitji, Abhishek, Shah Rukh and Rani were amazing. It's such an awesome cast.
To work with Karan is an enriching experience. I've discovered new facets to myself as a person and an actor. I used to call Karan the acting police on the sets of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. He wanted to change every nuance in my personality. He wanted me to change from Preity to Priya. He was constantly correcting me. I suddenly felt like a newcomer all over again. I was born again as an actor.
What I'm doing here is very different from anything I've done so far. It gives me a chance to portray different aspects of being a woman. I've done many different roles like the unwed mom in Kya Kehna and Salaam Namaste and the vixen in Armaan. But this one is really different.
Do I sound like one of those actors who are always talking about being hatke? But when you see the film you'll know what I mean.
And your other assignments?
I only have Alvidaa and Jaan-e-Man on hand. Jaan-e-Man is much more casual and crazy. It's a very sweet film. I have a big smile when I go on those sets. It's a more relaxing experience as an actor. It's great fun working with Karan. But my character is far more intense.
What makes this birthday special?
It's another year to look forward to. I don't want to sound philosophical, but I'm just happy to be financially and emotionally independent. I can do what I want. But I'm sad because my mom is in America with my brother. We're an absolutely global family. One of us is always travelling.
So you didn't cash in on the success of Salaam Namaste?
I'm not that kind of an actor. What's there to cash in on? Money is important, but not the only criteria for accepting a role. How much money does one need to live comfortably? No matter how rich, I still will eat an ordinary biscuit, not a gold one.
I'm having fun with my work. I want to do films that excite me, that are progressive, but I also need time to myself. I don't understand how others can do four films at the same time. I've done two. And I still haven't had time to move into my new house though I got it one year ago. It still [needs] to be done up.
Even your co-star Rani Mukerji has got a new home..
Has she managed to move into her new place? The rumours about our rivalry are so misplaced. The mindset on a film set is decided by the director. He's the captain of the ship. It's impossible to have negative vibes on a Karan Johar set. And all us actors had the script. So we knew what we were getting into. So why fight?
We all had the right to accept or reject the film. Once accepted, we all work as a team to make the film. For my performance to work, the film has to work. Kabhi Alvidaa will have powerful performances because the roles are all so well-etched.
How is it working with Abhishek? You haven't worked with him before.
Just that bit in Salaam Namaste. He's delightful to work with. I have lots of scenes with him. I've worked with his dad in Armaan and Veer-Zaara.
Are you concerned about what you'll do next?
No! I want to do something different from what I've done. I want to do a fun film. I'm a happy-go-lucky person. I'm listening to scripts.
What are your birthday thoughts? Marriage, maybe?
I don't know where these marriage rumours came from. The people who spread these rumours got very excited with the thought. But they've finally given up. Marriage is a personal decision. I'll take the plunge when the time is right. As of now, there's nothing on the cards.
Isn't the time right now?
No. Everything happens in its own time. Right now I'm working on my career. There's too much interest in my marriage. It's a stressful topic. I'm a frank person. When there's something happening, I'll announce it. Right now I'm sick of these speculations.
31. Final thoughts?
Yaaay, no shooting! I can wake up late and chill. Tomorrow is my relaxation day. I'll get myself a massage, pedicure, just indulge myself!
And what gifts do you expect?
I can buy myself anything. So my best gift from friends would be to love me for who I am. I hope they continue to support me, although I don't have too much time for them. My closest friend is Shagun in Delhi. She's always there for me. I don't need birthdays for my friends to make me feel special.

Down Memory Lane: Preity抯 7th birthday party
By looking at Preity Zinta, no one could ever guess that the baby-faced actress turns 31 today (January 31). Such is the effervescence that she exudes! She is ready as ever to take on the 30s in her stride. In fact, Preity is probably the only actress who proclaims her age with pride.
As she gets ready for yet another eventful year, she takes some time off to reminisce. Birthdays are a special for all of us, and even more when we are kids. As a child, she made sure that whoever came to her house on her birthday had a gift for her.
Like we all already know, she was a complete tomboy back then. She would eagerly look forward to all her birthdays. And her seventh birthday was no exception. A party was scheduled for the evening and she just could not contain her excitement. An over enthusiastic Preity was just hanging around her birthday cake. Finally, in the afternoon, she decided that she absolutely had to get a good look at the cake. In doing so, she slipped and her face went splat, right into the cake! Since the cake was ruined, she had to eat the cake herself! We assume that the party was quite a hit, anyway!
In the meantime, here抯 wishing Preity a very Happy Birthday from our end! And another year full of luck and laughter!
