Rexy: Special training adds power to Boon Heong抯 shots
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: National men抯 doubles coach Rexy Mainaky rates Tan Boon Heong as the player with the most lethal smash in the Malaysian team.
With more emphasis on his physical training programme, Rexy expects Boon Heong to make a bigger impact with partner Koo Kien Keat in international tournaments this year, starting with the defence of their doubles title in the Malaysian Open, which will begin from Jan 15-20 at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
揃oon Heong has the most powerful smash among all the men抯 doubles players in the team. His smashes are steep and are not easy for opponents to retrieve. That is an advantage for him and we are fine-tuning his weapon, |

Chong Wei and Hafiz praised for helping juniors
KUALA LUMPUR: Men抯 singles shuttlers Lee Chong Wei and Mohd Hafiz Hashim may be busy with their own pursuits for individual glory in the Malaysian Open, which will begin from Jan 15-20 at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, but they have not forgotten the back-up players.
During a sparring session with the Project 2010-12 squad players, the two seniors gave it their all, earning glowing praise from the squad抯 chief coach Rashid Sidek.
揑 know that not every top player will want to go all out when they train with the back-up players. But Chong Wei and Hafiz went out of their way to help them, |

Jawatan jadi galang ganti

揝aya masih mahu bersikap optimis. Biarpun untuk mencapai sasaran itu, ketiga-tiga beregu perlu berada dalam ranking empat terbaik dunia, saya tetap mahu rasa yakin ianya mampu dilakukan, |

Mew Choo nak balas dendam

Badminton: Tricky passage for Chong Wei in Korea
By : K.M. Boopathy
LEE Chong Wei will not have to worry about another first round encounter against any compatriot but instead faces a tricky passage in the preliminary stage of the Korea Open in Seoul on Jan 22-27.

Chong Wei, who will be looking forward to continuing his rivalry with China's World No 1 Lin Dan who is skipping next week's Malaysia Open, begins with an easy first round against Andrew Dabeka of Canada.
However, this will be followed by a potentially dangerous encounter against Korean Lee Hyu Il and Chong Wei may have to be at his best to overcome one of the most unpredictable performers on the world circuit.
If the Malaysian survives, he faces yet another threat in the form of either Taufik Hidayat or Simon Santoso, both of Indonesia, in the last eight.
And if he advances, he comes up against fourth seed Chen Jin of China, and then to the anticipated crunch match against Lin Dan.
Compatriot Hafiz Hashim has a tricky first round battle against Simon but even if he gets past the young Indonesian, he will have it tough against Taufik in the second round.
Veteran Wong Choong Hann should clear his first round against compatriot Lee Tsuen Seng but will be tested in the second round as he is likely to meet China's third seed Bao Chunlai.
In the men's doubles, Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari is the only senior Malaysian pair competing and have a realistic chance of reaching the quarter-finals.
Zakry-Fairuz open against Russia's Vitalih Durkin-Alexandr Nikolaenko and then take on Indonesian pair Luluk Hadiyanto-Alven Yulianto.
Their quarter-final opponents are expected to be Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae and it will take an extra effort on their part to topple the Koreans in their den.
In the women's singles, Wong Mew Choo begins her campaign against Taiwan's Cheng Shao Chieh, and assuming she advances, has a tricky encounter against Judith Meulendijks of the Netherlands.
Her quarter-final opponent is expected to be World No 2 Zhang Ning of China |
