'Mengapa saya tinggalkan BAM'
Oleh Ahmad Khawari Isa

SERIUS: Li Mao mengawasi pemainnya menjalani latihan di Stadium Putra, petang semalam menjelang saingan Terbuka Malaysia bermula hari ini.
|
Li Mao dedahkan sebab dia tidak mahu sambung kontrak latih pemain Malaysia
HAMPIR setahun selepas memilih untuk melangkah pergi, Li Mao - bekas jurulatih, Lee Chong Wei - semalam secara terbuka mendedahkan kepincangan dalam skuad badminton negara.
"Pemergian saya sebelumnya kerana dalam skuad Malaysia, ianya terlalu rumit. Tiada perpaduan dalam pasukan. Sikap pentingkan diri sendiri amat ketara.
Semuanya mahu lakukan perkara sendiri.

Joo-bong cool about Korean chances in Beijing
By LIM TEIK HUAT
KUALA LUMPUR: Former doubles specialist Park Joo-bong felt the current top Korean pair of Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung have an uphill task to defend the country's proud tradition of producing Olympic winners in the men's doubles.
The former Olympic gold medallist for South Korea sees current world number one Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong of Malaysia, Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China and world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia as the top three contenders.
“These three pairs will be fighting it out for the gold this time. Based on their overall performance and results last year, they have the better chance. They are also more consistent than the others and more importantly, gained the experience of what it takes to win big tournaments,” said Joo-bong.
At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Ha Tae-kwon-Kim Dong-moon secured the Olympic gold medal for South Korea – beating team-mate Lee Yong-soo-Yoo Yong-sung in the final.
Dong-soo-Yong-sung and Tae-kwon-Dong-moon were the silver and bronze medallists in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
“The top Korean pair have an outside chance to win a medal compared to the top pairs from China, Malaysia and Indonesia. They are not as solid as the previous pairs,” said Joo-bong, who is now the chief coach of the Japanese national team.
Haifeng-Cai Yun won the world title in Madrid in 2006 and Markis-Hendra won the edition in Kuala Lumpur last year, beating Yong-dae-Jae-sung in the final.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong failed in their bid to land the world title but they are still one of the top pairs to beat based on their reputation of having won seven titles since they forged a partnership in October, 2005. Among the major titles under their belts are the Asian Games and the All-England.
And Joo-bong, who had a stint as coach of the Malaysian team for almost five years until 2002, felt it is within the ability of Kien Keat-Boon Heong to successfully defend their Malaysian Open title.
“This will be the first Super Series tournament and I think everyone will want to do well from now until the end of Olympic qualifying period in April,” he said.
“Koo-Tan is one of the exciting pairs to watch because they are both good attacking players. Koo is also good at the net and they have a very good chance to win as long as they do not become too over-confident.
“A thing I noticed is the pair tend to start to play a fancy game once they get too comfortable and they should be all right as long as they avoid this. It does not serve a purpose if you concentrate too much on beautiful play because every mistake you make will reward your opponent with a point.”

BAM tak peduli dakwaan Li Mao
Oleh Meor Hisham Zulkifli

GIGIH: Pemain badminton China menjalani latihan fasa terakhir di Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil sebelum menyahut aksi Siri Super Terbuka Malaysia bermula hari ini.
|

Badminton: Tan Fook to wed Chinese doubles star after Olympics
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: It is probably one of the best-kept love affairs in the world of badminton. And yesterday, Malaysia's Choong Tan Fook revealed that he could end his badminton career after the Beijing Olympics in August to tie the knot with China's Olympic and world champion doubles shuttler Zhang Jiewen. After keeping the relationship under wraps, Tan Fook decided that it was the right time to come out in the open at the Malaysian Open, which begins from 9am today with the qualifying tournament at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil. After all, it was at the 2004 Malaysian Open in Pahang when their love bloomed. Then, Tan Fook went on to win the men's doubles title with Lee Wan Wah and Jiewen took the women's title with Yang Wei. | Wedding bells: Zhang Jiewen and Choong Tan Fook (below, right) fell in love during the 2004 Malaysian Open.
| Tan Fook said that he was looking forward to making his third and final appearance in Beijing. Tan Fook-Wan Wah are now ranked fifth in the world and are in with a shot to qualify for the Beijing Games. 揑 hope that we will qualify ... it is going to be my last Olympics. I do not know what will happen after that as far as my career is concerned. Will the country still need me? I don't know. There may be some changes, |

Rexy has no complaints on his working conditions
KUALA LUMPUR: National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky has no problem working with anyone in the Malaysian coaching and training set-up.
And the men's doubles players, led by Koo Kien Keat, echoed this.
Rexy said yesterday that he did not want to discuss the motive of Li Mao in criticising the Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) coaching and training system after leaving the set-up almost a year ago.
He added that he was happy with the current training environment.
揑 have not gotten into problem. I do not foresee any difficulties in my working relationship with others in the team. I would prefer to work with the focus on getting the team ready for the Beijing Olympics, |

Malaysian Open not Taufik抯 priority
By LIM TEIK HUAT
KUALA LUMPUR: Reigning Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat has not won the Malaysian Open title but he will not be disappointed if he fails to secure a good outing in the first Super Series event of the year. For Taufik, doing well in the All-England in March and the Beijing Olympics in August are his main targets and the Indonesian will be more selective in the tournaments to play to achieve his goals. 揑 have no high expectations for the Malaysian Open, |
