Bayern Chief Remains Poker-Faced Over Donovan

Bayern Munich general manager Uli Hoeness has refused to be drawn out whether Landon Donovan's 10-day training spell is just that, or whether it is in effect an intensive trial.

Fresh from winning the 2008 MLS Golden Boot, the LA Galaxy forward has admitted that he'd love to try his luck in Europe again, though so far there is no indication that the arrangement with Bayern is for any other purpose than to keep fit and for the opportunity to train with top players at a state-of-the-art facility.

"He has only been here for two days and so I cannot say too much, but what I have seen has been okay. He can certainly kick the ball," Hoeness told the German press..

"Donovan is just here for 10 days and only after that can I say anything more."

Donovan, , who knows Germany well from his time with Bayer Leverkusen between 2001-2005,, is coming off an exceptional MLS season, scoring 20 goals in his 25 games and adding nine assists. He beat FC Dallas striker Kenny Cooper by two goals. In third place was Donovan’s Galaxy team-mate Edson Buddle.

Sagnol Admits Early Retirement Fears

Bayern Munich and France defender Willy Sagnol says there is a very real possibility that he has already played his last competitive matchs.

The 31-year-old, who has not featured at all for club or country since France's 4-2 loss to Holland at Euro 2008, cast a solemn figure during a recent interview with TF1 television, during which time he announced that he would be calling it a career if he isn't completely recovered by May.

"I came back in pre-season full of desire, but during the preparation, I had a problem with my Achilles tendon," he explained.

"I had to have an operation, which means my recovery will be longer than predicted.

"The hardest thing is not knowing when I could play again. My priority is to find out if I can play football again or not.

"If things have not been resolved by May, my retirement will be certain."

Werder Boss: We Won And That's All That Matters

Underachieving Bundesliga side Werder Bremen boss put on a very workmanlike performance to beat 1. FC Köln 3-1 on Sunday, but their coach Thomas Schaaf insists that he's far more concerned with accumulating points than playing pretty at the moment.

An early Diego penalty took some pressure off the home side's shaky defense, and a 45th minute header from Naldo put Bremen firmly in control.  Milivoje Novakovic pulled one back for the visitors in the 48th minute, but a spectacular strike from Hugo Almedia in the 55th sealed what was otherwise a rather unspectacular victory for Bremen.

"It is inconsequential whether we grind out a result or whether we dazzle at the moment," said Schaaf after the match.  "What counts now is the three points and that we get the results that will allow us to work on improving aspects of our game in calm.

"The result was important and the points especially. It's nice to see us moving up the table but even that is not so important at the moment. Again, what matters now is that we put in the effort needed to get the successes needed to rebuild our confidence."

Werder moved up to seventh as a result of the victory, five points off the Champions League places.

Bundesliga Team Of The Week: Round 13

Goalkeeper

(1)  Dennis Eilhof (Arminia Bielefeld)

The Bielefeld custodian put in another good performance against Stuttgart at the Mercedes Benz Arena to keep a clean sheet and secure a potentially vital point for his struggling side.  Two saves from Elson and Cacau in the second period were particularly noteworthy.

Defenders

(2)  Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich)

Back in the Bayern line-up following a spell out injured, full back Philipp Lahm showed just what an important member of the side he is with an excellent display against traditional rivals Gladbach.  It was his storming run down the right in the first half that set up the opening goal for Luca Toni.

(3)  Neven Subotic (Borussia Dortmund)

Subotic carried on his fantastic start to the Bundesliga season with another top display against Frankfurt as BVB won 2-0.  Days after opting to represent Serbia internationally, the Dortmund centre back scored twice and was arguably the ‘Man of the Match’ at the Signal-Iduna Park.

(4)  Felipe Santana (Borussia Dortmund)

With Mats Hummels and Robert Kovac out injured and suspended, Brazilian Santana played alongside Subotic in the Dortmund defence and was highly impressive as they ran out comfortable winners.  He even chipped in with the fourth goal of the afternoon heading in a Hajnal free kick.

(5)  Michael Kadlec (Bayer Leverkusen)

Yet again the on-loan full back put in a highly polished performance as Leverkusen beat Schalke 2-1 at the Bay-Arena to maintain their spot at the top of the table.  His runs down the right are giving opposition teams a whole host of extra problems to deal with and making it increasingly likely that we will be seeing him in the Bundesliga again next season.

Midfielders

(6)  Carlos Eduardo (Hoffenheim)

Hoffenheim’s Brazilian schemer was on top form on Saturday as the Bundesliga high-fliers returned to winning ways with a 3-2 home win over Wolfsburg.  He bent home a superb direct free kick in the first half to restore his side’s lead and fully deserved to finish up on the winning side.

(7)  Franck Ribéry (Bayern Munich)

Bayern’s return to the top end of the Bundesliga and top form has coincided with a return of the best of Franck Ribéry.  The mercurial Frenchman was a thorn in the side of the Borussia defence and he scored the Bavarian’s second of the game from the penalty spot after winning the spot kick himself.

(8)  Tamas Hajnal (Borussia Dortmund)

Hungarian midfielder Tamas Hajnal ran the show for Dortmund against Frankfurt at the Signal Iduna Park on Saturday and ran Neven Subotic very close for the ‘Man of the Match’ award.  He provided the assists for three of Dortmund’s four goals with his excellent set-piece delivery.

(9)  Renato Augusto (Bayer Leverkusen)

The Brazilian pulled the strings once again for Bayer Leverkusen and it was his run down the right that bamboozled Levan Kobiashvili before setting up the opening goal for Stefan Kießling.

Forwards

(10)  Chinedu Obasi (Hoffenheim)

At least one Hoffenheim striker seems to appear in the Goal.com Bundesliga Team of the week each week and once again Nigerian Chinedu Obasi takes his place amongst the best of the weekend.  He set up the opener for Vedad Ibisevic before rounding off a fine game by scoring the winner against Wolfsburg.  He now has six goals in ten games this season.

(11)  Patrick Helmes (Bayer Leverkusen)

Helmes took his season’s tally to ten in thirteen games with a clinical strike at home to Schalke.  The goal came from virtually nowhere with the international striker pouncing on a semi-loose ball to fire home an excellent shot past Manuel Neuer.

Eilhoff

Lahm   Subotic   Santana   Kadlec

Hajnal   Eduardo   Augusto   Ribéry

Obasi   Helmes

Honourable mentions:

As always there are a number of players, who deserve a special mention despite having not made it into the final XI.

Bielefeld centre back Nils Fischer played well against Stuttgart keeping Cacau and Mario Gomez at bay during the 0-0 draw at the Mercedes Benz Arena.  Christian Pander played well on his return to the Schalke side, while Werder’s Diego orchestrated Werder’s win over Köln.

Chinedu Obasi made it into the first XI, but strike partners Vedad Ibisevic and Demba Ba were also deserving of a special mention. In the same match Grafite and Edin Dzeko played well as well.

Cottbus’ Branko Jelic was introduced with 15 minutes left with instructions to score the winner and that is exactly what he did.  The Lausitzer keeper Gerhard Tremmel did his bit at the other end to keep a rare clean sheet for Bojan Prasnikar’s side

Stefan Kießling scored for Leverkusen with a well taken goal, while both Nicu and Arne Friedrich did well for Hertha Berlin as they beat Hamburg.  Luca Toni was his predatory best scoring his fifth of the season for Bayern while Hugo Almeida's goal against Koln deserves a mention here also.

Bayer still leading the way

Bayer Leverkusen won Saturday's heavyweight clash with Schalke 04 to stay top of the pile, while the Royal Blues dropped further off the pace at the top.

Bayer's 2-1(2-0) victory made it six wins in seven games for them. For Schalke, it was the second big-game loss in a week having gone down at home to Bayern M黱chen by the same score last time out.

One apiece for strike partners

Stefan Kie遧ing (30.) and Patrick Helmes (41.) gave Leverkusen a decisive half-time advantage, with Kevin Kuranyi's consolation strike five minutes from time proving too little, too late for Schalke.

The home side had Gonzalo Castro sent off in the 67th minute after hepicked up a second yellow card for a foul, but they held on comfortably enough in the end.

Early chance

Schalke squandered a golden opportunity to go in front early on, Kuranyi firing wide when free in the box in the 19th minute.

That incident aside, each team for the most part neutralised the other almost completely in the opening stages. The half-chances that were created did however tend to come Schalke's way.

Playmaker does the business

That was before Renato Augusto took over, skipping past Levan Kobiashvili down the right to put in Kie遧ing for his sixth goal of the season. Ahead against the run of play, Leverkusen doubled their advantage shortly before the interval, with Helmes quickest on the follow-up to a fumbled Renato Augusto shot, to bag his own tenth of the campaign.

Schalke coach Fred Rutten brough on three fresh pairs of legs early inthe second half in Christian Pander (46.), Benedikt H鰓edes (52.) and Gerald Asamoah (66.).

But a lone chance for Heiko Westermann (74.) aside, there was not much happening up front for the Royal Blues now. At the other end, sub Sascha Dum (76.) passed up the chance to make it 3-0 for Bayer.
