Lescott boost for City

Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott expects to be back in contention for Sunday's Premier League trip to Arsenal.

The 29-year-old has missed the club's last five games after suffering a groin injury in the Europa League defeat at Sporting Lisbon last month.

Manager Roberto Mancini said last week he hoped Lescott would be fit to play at the Emirates Stadium and the player on Tuesday confirmed he is close to a return.

Lescott tweeted: "I'm defo fit now been back training for 4/5 days now, so I will be available for selection on the weekend."

During Lescott's absence City have lost at Swansea and been held to frustrating draws by Stoke and Sunderland to concede their advantage in the title race.

They now trail rivals Manchester United by five points with just seven games remaining - a deficit that could be eight points by the time they kick off at Arsenal.

Uncertainty remains over the fitness of striker Sergio Aguero.

Aguero has missed the last two games with a mystery foot injury which Mancini has conceded was exacerbated by the use of a treatment spray.

Mancini said last weekend he hoped the Argentinian would be available at Arsenal but was unsure while Samir Nasri could also return against his old club.

Porto fined over Mario abuse

UEFA penalise Portuguese club after Balotelli chants

Porto have been penalised over racist chants directed towards Mario Balotelli

Porto have been fined £16,700 by UEFA after their supporters racially abused Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli in February.

The European governing body confirmed the punishment on Tuesday night following a meeting of its control and disciplinary body which took place last week.

City lodged a complaint after Balotelli was subjected to monkey taunts during the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie at the Estadio do Dragao on 16th February.

The Portuguese club have three days to appeal against the verdict.

There were outbreaks of monkey chanting throughout the game, which City won 2-1, but it appeared most noticeable when Balotelli was substituted 12 minutes from time.

Porto coach Vitor Pereira later claimed there may have been a misunderstanding and that fans were actually chanting, "Hulk, Hulk, Hulk" at the club's star player.

That has been dismissed, with a statement reading: "The UEFA control and disciplinary body has imposed a fine of €20,000 on FC Porto for racist conduct of their supporters at their first-leg round of 32 UEFA Europa League match against Manchester City FC on 16 February in Porto."

Mancini backs Silva

Man City boss hopes Spaniard's form will return before it is too late

David Silva: The Spanish playmaker has not been hitting the early season heights for Manchester City in recent weeks

Roberto Mancini admits he is concerned about the form of his Spanish playmaker David Silva who has been putting in below-par displays in recent weeks.

The 26-year-old looked worth every penny of his £26million move from Valencia a year before when he was taking the Premier League by storm at the start of the season.

Eyebrows were raised by some at his lacklustre performance in Manchester City's 3-3 draw against Sunderland where he taken off before the hour.

His dip in form has coincided with a stumble in City's title push but despite this Mancini was quick to defend the World Cup winner.

Normal

"I don't know how many games David has played for us in the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, Carling Cup, FA Cup plus internationals," said Mancini.

"But it's normal that a player can arrive at a moment when he can't play 100 per cent."

That Sunderland match was his 46th appearance of the season so far for both club and country and Mancini is hoping he can shake off his end of season blues and finish the campaign with a flourish - reigniting their championship charge in the process.

"David always plays here [indicates high level with hand] and now maybe he is here [drops hand lower to chest]," he added. "This is normal, but I hope he can recover."

We need mature Mario - De Jong

Wednesday 4th April 2012 8:17

Nigel de Jong has told Mario Balotelli to stop playing the "fool" as Manchester City attempt to get their title challenge back on track.

Balotelli was involved in an on-pitch bust-up with team-mates over the taking of a second-half free-kick in last Saturday's 3-3 Premier League draw at home to Sunderland, but still displayed his value by scoring twice.

De Jong has urged the Italian to stop courting controversy and concentrate on helping the Citizens launch a late charge after they slipped five points behind title rivals Manchester United.

"Sometimes Mario is a fool and at other times he is a genius - there are two sides to him, " he told The Sun.

"Lots of people expect him to pull off crazy stunts and as a result he feels he must do something. People like that need to have upheaval in their lives in order to perform.

"He is happy in his personal relationship. That is important and it makes him more focused.

"But he knows that he has to become more serious-minded."

Aguero could face Gunners

Argentine aims to clear any confusion surrounding foot injury

Sergio Aguero: The Argentine has missed the draws against Stoke and Sunderland

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has rubbished several of the unusual theories behind his foot injury and he hopes to be fit to face Arsenal on Sunday.

Last week, Blues manager Roberto Mancini said Aguero would miss the Premier League encounter with Sunderland after picking up what he said was a 'stupid' injury.

It subsequently transpired Aguero had a swollen foot, which had reacted badly to a spray applied to treat an injury.

How Aguero got the initial injury was the subject of numerous claims, including one that he had fallen off his son's motocross bike and another that he had tripped down the steps of the team bus.

That City's £38million record signing missed the draws against Stoke and Sunderland which mean the club are now five points adrift of title favourites Manchester United just made the situation even worse.

However, Aguero insists there is less to the injury than some have tried to claim, as he said on his official website: "During the match against Chelsea, I injured my ankle and it was sprayed with a topical anaesthetic that caused a burn on the upper part of my right foot.

'Incredible rumours'

"The injury worsened after a few days and when boils appeared I was told I wouldn't play against Stoke and then against Sunderland.

"You can imagine how I felt, being out of playing condition when my team is trying to take the championship. It's always worse from the bench.

"After that I started receiving incredible rumours about how it all happened.

"I know my life is very public and I'm willing to take criticism even if I disagree with it. But I will not sit quietly while lies are being spread - even more so if they cast doubt upon my professionalism.

"This is a simple injury and not a plot of intrigue."

Yet, however Aguero received the injury, his absence has been keenly felt.

Title fight

Of Mancini's other striking options, Edin Dzeko is presently in a poor run of form, Mario Balotelli's increasing erratic behaviour is casting a shadow over the club and Carlos Tevez has not appeared fully fit since returning to the fold.

And now City have reached the point of no return, knowing that unless they beat Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday any remaining hopes of winning the title will surely have evaporated.

Aguero is desperate to be fit. And he insists this is not the time to start pondering what might have been.

"It's hard to believe it happened while we are fighting for the title," he said of his injury. "This is the real status of my injury. I got back from practice today and it's not bothering me.

"If it all goes well, I'll be at coach's disposal next Sunday.

"This is no time for moping. I've said it before and I'll say it again - we are going to fight until the end. That's our collective goal and I'm fully committed to it."
