Valencia Battle To Draw At Almeria
Almeria 2-2 Valencia
Almeria largely outplayed their opponents in a game where Valencia only sparked in the briefest of moments. Gonzalo Arconada's side proved to former boss Unai Emery as well as the rest of La Liga that they will be no pushovers this season again, having finished 8th last time out.
Alvaro Negredo led the line superbly for the hosts, augmented by the extremely promising Pablo Piatti, and the duo caused Valencia all manner of problems.
Los Che turned things around in the second half, having been distinctly second best in the opening period, and will be more than happy with a point.
Valencia started the week reeling from the news that David Silva would be missing for 2/3 months after an operation, while tactical matters were made all the more complex by the absence of Vicente from the squad due to injury. Villa would take the position of lone striker, supported by Mata, Joaquin and Pablo, with the former Betis winger seemingly starting in an unaccustomed central role.
The hosts were far superior in the opening exchanges, breaking up Valencia's disjointed, almost lazy attacking moves with ease and hitting Los Che on the break. Villa was starved of service, as was so often the case through last season, while the team looked shapeless and without direction.
Renan had kept his place in the Che goal with Hildebrand again omitted, but in just his second match, the Brazilian raised questions over Emery's decision when he failed to hold a vicious Alvarez shot, after good work from Corona. The Valencia defence failed to react in time, with Piatti steaming in at full tilt to lash the ball into the net after twenty minutes.
It was a deserved goal, but Valencia worked their way back through an unlikely combination of their two centre backs. A corner won cleverly by Pablo reached Albiol on the dead ball line, and the international sent the ball back for Alexis to fire like a seasoned striker, levelling things up.
However, if Emery hoped the equaliser was a mark of his side gaining some semblence of parity in the match, he was wrong, for within minutes of Alexis' striker, all-action centre forward Negredo had put Almerica deservedly back in front. Bruno burst down the right as he did all night to great effect. His cross was headed home superbly by the striker, twisting his neck and powering his effort perfectly to spin over the helpless, airborne Renan.
With just a few minutes of the first half to go, Valencia looked shaky, and the defence was forced into panicked clearences as Almeria were buyoant. Valencia nearly hit back when a Pablo long range effort, fired into the ground, bounced up and off the bar, but Negredo should have given the hosts a two goal cushion just before the break. The marksman stole in on the near post and looked certain to find the net with a diving header, but he agonizingly failed to connect.
Emery had a lot of work to do at halftime, but resisted making any changes. He was vindicated, for after seven minutes of the second half, Joaquin, who had been very quiet all game, found Villa with a great overhead ball, but the forward's powerful strike was saved by Almeria's Brazilian between the sticks, Diego Alves.
Minutes later, the cavalry were on with Angulo and Morientes taking to the field. The reaction was immediate, though not necessarily because of the new additions, but rather Almeria's increasingly conservative approach, which coincided with the replacing of star-in-the-making Piatti for Abert Crusat.
First, Villa squeezed a ball across the six yard only for Morientes to be closed out by some superb defending, but the much sought-after former Zaragoza striker make Valencia's resurgence count soon after. Joaquin again found the Valencia superstar on the right hand side of the penalty, and the hot shot fired low, diagonal effort across the 'keeper to tie it up again.
The goal was deserved after the pressure exterted by the visitors, but Valencia could have paid the same price as Almeria for taking their foot off the pedal. The hosts soon regained their momentum as Los Che stood off, and the dominance swang the way of Arconada's side for the last fifteen minutes.
The contest pointedly highlighted the problems of a Valencia sans Silva, and Emery will have some thinking to do before the next Liga outing if Los Che are to keep moving forward in the next few matches, although a fairly soft opening set of fixtures may help them.
For Almeria, a very impressive performance from a team that should not to be taken lightly by anyone this season. |

Player Ratings: Almeria 2-2 Valencia
Almeria
Alves - 7
A decent performance from one of two Brazilian goalkeepers on the night. Excellent save to stop Villa's first effort, but could do nothing about the second.
Bruno - 7.5
Excellent performance from the bald, marauding right back. A real captain courageous display from Bruno, who also delivered a great cross for Negredo's goal. Untroubled by Valencia's wide contingent.
Pellerano - 7
Looks a solid acquisition by Arconada, he marshals the central defence well. A vocal, imposing figure.
Chico - 6.5
Less dominant than his Argentine centre back partner, but a decent performance nevertheless.
Mane - 7
Solid for the most part and got forward well, negating Pablo, bar one or two occasions, leading to the winger's replacing before the hour mark.
Juanito - 7
Did the dirty work of shielding the defence well, though was hardly caused many problems by a one-paced Che midfield and poor support to Villa.
Alvarez - 7.5
Provided cover in defence and bombed forward in equal measure. A real box-to-box performance, and his vicious shot led to Renan's fumbling and Piatti's opener.
Corona - 7
Had an effective night in a central attacking role but saw joy on the left too, cutting in to play a key role in the build up for Almeria's first goal.
Juanma Ortiz - 6.5
A decent outing in the wide right role, Ortiz showed plenty of spirit and attempted to link up with Bruno at every juncture, but faded a little the match went on.
Piatti - 8
Almeria have landed them selves one hell of a player here. Many will point to Angulo and Morientes's introduction as spurring Valencia into a revival, but the truth is Almeria handed over the momentum by withdrawing into defence and replacing this pacey, pocket genius. A menace to Valencia all game.
Negredo - 8
This is how you play up front alone. An excellent performance, Negredo seems to have all the qualities: strength, touch, energy and endeavour. An outstanding header for Almeria's second, the little club will do well to keep him in January, let alone next summer.
Subs
Crusat - 6
Nowhere near as effective as Piatti down the left, and you cant help feeling the result may have been different had the new signing stayed on.
Uche - 6.5
Did well enough in bolstering the midfield and got himself involved, even though his introduction was part of tactically negative shift by Arconada that handed momentum to Los Che.
Natalio - N/A
Valencia
Renan - 6
Fumbled badly for the opener, the former Internacional shot-stopper looked devastated with his first half gaff, not least due to the media attention surrounding his inclusion, and the on-looking Hildebrand.
Miguel - 7
Quite in the first half, but a more potent attacking weapon in the second. The usual energy and directness, but not helped by poor movement of team mates further upfield.
Alexis - 6.5
Took his goal very well indeed, but there was a lack of tenacity in the Valencia central defence and some panicky moments that needn't have occurred. Moreover, had he, like the rest of his defence, reacted half as quickly as Piatti for the opener, it might have stayed goalless for longer.
Albiol - 6.5
Essentially, see above. Set up his partner well for the goal, but there was a lack of authority in defence. Valencia need Marchena back, and his return will help Albiol no end.
Moretti - 6.5
Solid enough at the back, but offered little in attack.
Pablo - 6.5
Broke through once or twice down the right, but fluttered in and out of the match. Not playing like a man desperate to make the right wing berth his own, Pablo can be frustrating to watch. Subbed off after he drifted out of the game.
Albelda - 5.5
Failed to help out the defence with his supposed screening role when they needed it the most - in the first half. Huffed and puffed, chasing shadows. There were also purely footballing reasons why he was dropped from the team last season, and they are slowly re-emerging. He needs to up his game.
Fernandes - 6
He will disappointed with his display today, or at least he should be. That's the problem with Fernandes, you just don't know what's going on inside his head - hopefully something. At the moment the former Benfica man is having trouble showing his undoubted quality on the field, and remains a perplexing, ongoing concern.
Mata - 6
Surprisingly ineffective. Showed no lack of appetite to get involved, but nothing came off for him this evening. He'll have better days at the office, and Valencia will certainly be hoping so, in the absence of Silva and the unreliable Vicente.
Joaquin - 7
Very quiet - lost even - in the first half. Started centrally, then driftet left, but became more involved as the game wore on. Set up Villa twice with excellent passes, one of which got Los Che a point.
Villa - 8
Given the fact he was totally isolated and starved of any service whatsoever for most of the game, Villa took his goal superbly. He didn't let some listless build up play downfield hamper his mindset, and looked so dangerous when space presented itself in the last 30 minutes of the match.
Subs
Morientes - 6.5
His introduction provided more space for the lethal Villa
Angulo - 6.5
Imposed himself more than Mata, and helped in the defensive effort when Valencia perhaps questionably took their foot off the gas.

Valencia coach Unai Emery has consigned himself to losing David Silva for up to three months but admitted that the player’s need for an ankle operation was not only an inevitable decision but ultimately the best solution for the winger's long term well-being. |
