K-Wave Star 'Has No Plans to Wed'

Korean Wave star Kwon Sang-woo has told to a Japanese film magazine he does not plan to get married any time soon. Ahead of the Japanese release of his film "Youth Comic," the actor gave a promotional interview to Cinema Today magazine on his goals as he heads into his thirties. "It's not that I want to put work before marriage, but there just aren't any plans," he is quoted as saying. "I want to give better performances, and I am making better work." He confessed to feeling more comfortable now he is 30. "I have a responsibility as an actor, and I have a little more leeway," he said.

Kwon, who has previously admitted to dreams of appearing in a Japanese soap, named the actor Toru Nakamura, who has appeared in Korean movies, and Takeshi Kaneshiro as two stars he would like to work with. The interviewer swooned over Kwon's smooth style. "Throughout the interview, he looked me straight in the eye and answered in a gentle and respectful voice, exuding the charm that has captured the hearts not just of Korean women but of Japanese women as well," Cinema Today gushed.

Shinhwa's Moon Jeong Hyeok, "Will carefully choose next role shortly"

Shinhwa member Moon Jeong Hyeok (Eric) (Super Rookie) who has been involved with recent talks of double contract disputes has entered a thinking period.

Having been discussed as the main character of 'Sweet Guy' and 'Mooojeokeui Nakhasan Yowon,' Moon Jeong Hyeok has been stressed emotionally in regards to the adverse criticism about a double contract dispute.

Moon Jeong Hyeok's agency, Good Entertainment Media Group, commented on the 14th, "Eric received a casting request for 'Sweet Guy' from Opus 101 Productions and has had in-depth discussions regarding the character. However, Moon Jeong Hyeok received another casting request recently from LK Production that produced drama 'Super Rookie.'"

"Full House" to Be Exported to Japan

The KBS hit drama "Full House" starring Rain and Song Hye-kyo will be exported to Japan for Japanese viewers across the island country, KBS Media said.

The drama has already gained great popularity in many Asian nations such as China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. In some southeast Asian nations, it recorded viewing rates as high as the popular Korean drama Daejanggeum (Jewel in the Palace). In Thailand, its viewing rates for its last episode posted a staggering 64 percent.

The export to Japan is expected to serve as an opportunity to show the true value of the drama's two Korean stars, especially at a time when Rain is already enjoying great popularity as a singer and Song is also quite famous in Japan for her role in the drama "Autumn in My Heart" and the film "My Girl and I." Insiders believe that the fact that the drama features the two stars will produce great synergistic effects.

"Compared to 'Winter Sonata,' which received a rave response from middle-aged Japanese women, 'Full House' may potentially be loved by young people in their teens and 20s," KBS Media said. "We expect that the export of the drama may help spread the Korean Wave or Korean pop culture craze among the younger generation in Japan."

An Old Actor's Physical Challenge

By Kim Tae-jong
Staff Reporter

Ju Hyun

Actors are always required to challenge themselves by playing different and new characters, which is also the charm of the vocation. But there is not a variety of opportunities for veteran actors over the age of 60 to enjoy this delight, as their roles in films led by hunks and bombshells usually tend to be limited to father or mother figures.

Every once in a while, however, there comes the chance for them to emerge from their stereotyped image and show off their new talents, and the moment has come to actor Ju Hyun, 64, for his role in the upcoming flick "The Fox Family'' (Kumiho Kajok).

In the film, whose genre is similar to the 1979 American cult film ``Rocky Horror Picture Show,'' Ju plays a single father of three children. But things are not that simple as he has to dance and sing in the musical-like comedy movie.

"It was the hardest role as I had to learn how to dance and sing. I didn't want to embarrass myself as well as others,'' Ju said Thursday during a news conference at Seoul Cinema in Chongno, downtown Seoul.

"If this film is successful, I'll continue to act, but if not, I'll stop for a while or for good,'' Ju said with a little bit of humor but he sounded enthusiastic and firmly determined when he said, "I've done my best for the film.''

He started his career as a television actor in 1969, but did not give the audience a truly impressive performance until 1990 when he starred in the TV drama "Seoul Ttukpaegi'' as a comical character in his middle age, and he has developed the character in other works.

Directed by Lee Hyung-gon, "The Fox Family'' takes the motif from the ghastly Korean tale of "kumiho,'' a fox with nine tails that desperately yearns to become human but can only do so by gobbling up the livers of 100 unfortunate souls.

But different from the scary original, the film revolves around a wacky kumiho family, who struggle to become a human while they run a circus with their tricks and magical powers.

A scene from the musical film" The Fox Family"

"I'm really bad at getting rhythms. I sang only when I was drunk, rapping on the table with chopsticks. So there were moments when I really wanted to give up while practicing. But the director and producer kept encouraging me saying `'practice makes perfect,''' Ju said

During the conference, a short video clip was introduced for the first time where each character sings and dances. In the clip, Ju showed that a month-long intensive training paid off.

Despite the hard training and difficulties he went through, he said that he had chosen the film because the scenario was so fun.

"I think the genre of musical is unique and challenging, but I laughed a lot while I read the scenario and finished it with few pauses. The unconventional story really got me,'' Ju said.

"Some of my friends told me that I was so lucky to take a leading role in a movie given my age. But definitely, it was fun to challenge myself and I don't have any regrets,'' he said.

"The Fox Family'' is now in post-production and slated to open in October.

A Serious Man for a Serious Job: Shin Ha-Gyun

Shin Ha-gyun is known as a man of few words in the Korean film industry. The reticent actor plays a speechless killer in his new film "No Mercy for the Rude," to be released on Aug. 24. Shin says only a single word during the entire two-hour movie. An actor for 10 years, Shin has been praised by his contemporaries for his skill in playing contradictory characters: innocent but frightening, or both angelic and evil. By the same token, he has starred in both art-house movies like "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" and "Save the Green Planet" and big hits such as "Joint Security Area", "Welcome to Dongmakgol" and "The Big Scene," which attracted audiences of more than 16 million combined, showing his innocent smile while hiding his lunatic eyes.

"There have been many killer movies, but this one caught my eye because it wasn't typical," he says about the new movie. "It's extravagant but not shallow... well, it's like a joke that makes people think about something serious." In interview, he is almost as laconic as his parts. Shin's character in the movie was born with a short tongue and stopped speaking when he grew up because he was bullied about it. After seeing a quack who tells him that an operation costing W100 million (US$1=W959) can completely cure his condition, he becomes a contract killer.

Shin takes viewers by surprise with his perfect absorption in any character he plays, but in reality he seems so ordinary that few who see him on the big screen would recognize him. "I usually jog along the Jungrangcheon stream near my place, but no one has recognized me so far," he says.

Shin is not only reticent but very shy and says he never spoke out in front of others when he was a child. The reason he enjoys his life as an actor, he says, is that he can communicate with others through movies. Enrolling at the Seoul Institute of the Arts in 1993, he says, "What I like about acting is that I can express what I understand not in words but by other means. When I think that I make others feel just what I felt, I'm happy."

A lighthearted request for any funny anecdotes from the set brings an unexpected chill to the atmosphere. "These questions always embarrass me," he says. "You may think of me as rather arrogant, but when I act, I only focus on my job, so how could such things happen?"

Kim Tae-hee Becomes Highest-Paid Cosmetics Model

Kim Tae-hee has signed the cosmetics industry's highest-paying long-term contract, reaffirming her status as one of the nation's most bankable beauties. The star's agency said the contract stipulates she will model the HERA brand of Amorepacific for the next five years -- a rare vote of confidence in a model抯 enduring allure. She will be paid highest sum in the industry.

Amorepacific explained it conducted an opinion poll in which Kim's special brand of intelligent beauty and feminine grace won her the most votes. When she was working over at rival firm LG Household & Health Care representing the Ohui brand -- virtually unknown at that time -- she played a key role in bringing about a sharp increase in its brand recognition.

Besides Kim's contract, previously the most lucrative was signed by Lee Young-ae with LG Household & Health Care for "The History of Who." It spans two years and will bring the actress some W2 billion. As luck would have it, Lee Young-ae started out at Amorepacific before moving to pastures new at LG, while Kim Tae-hee took the opposite course.

Amorepacific has been working to build up a top-of-the-line image for its premium HERA line and plans to unleash a marketing blitz not just in Korea but all across Asia.

The boy-band TVXQ has been ranked the highest among Asian groups on the Japanese Oricon chart.

The group's seventh single album, entitled "Sky," which was released August 6, took the sixth spot on Oricon抯 weekly single chart.

TVXQ's agency, SM Entertainment, said the group was the first among Asian bands, excluding Japanese ones, to take the sixth spot on the chart and make it to the top ten.

"Sky," a cheerful song appropriate for a summer atmosphere, has gained popularity in Japan after it was featured in a TV commercial for Baskin Robbins Japan.

Hong Kong Daily Hails "Married to Mafia 3"

The influential Hong Kong daily Oriental Daily News published a full-page article on its front page on August 19 about the South Korean movie "Married to Mafia 3."

The final scene of "Married to Mafia 3," which stars Hong Kong star Qi Shu, was secretly filmed August 18 in Hong Kong. The scene shows Qi Shu and another Hong Kong star, Ken Lo, fighting on the roof of a building. The movie's production company kept the location of the scene under wraps, but the next day Oriental Daily News had published a large photo of the filming site.

The production firm's CEO said he was surprised to see the photo in a copy of the newspaper that his production crew brought from Hong Kong, adding that the paparazzi had probably hidden in a nearby building.

The newspaper posted the photo of Qi Shu and Ken Lo shooting the scene and described the atmosphere of the filming site in detail.

The article was published under three dramatic headlines: "Outraged Mafia member Qi Shu Slashes Ken Lo," "Qi Shu Ponders Her Life in Front of Gun Muzzle," and "Bloodshed on Rooftop."

The article said that film experts praised Qi Shu when she was shooting the scene, and that she was wearing tight clothes and wielding a dagger with her face covered in blood stains. The newspaper also wrote that the actress slightly injured her back when Ken Lo accidently hit her as he was overly engrossed in the acting. "Qi Shu was hurt enough to shed tears but resumed filming after a brief break, to the applause of the production crew," wrote the newspaper.

Oriental Daily News also wrote that Qi Shu treated the production crew to ice cream and snacks because the weather was extremely hot when the scene was being shot.

At the bottom of the page, the newspaper also introduced the first two parts of the "Married to Mafia" series, saying that Hong Kong star Zhang Ziyi appeared in a cameo in the last two scenes of the movies.

"Married to Mafia 3," the last in the comic movie series, will open late this year. Unlike the first two installments, starring actress Shin Eun-kyung, "Married to Mafia 3," which stars top Hong Kong stars, depicts a story of a female Hong Kong mafia member who is banished from Hong Kong and comes to Korea, where she is protected by the Korean mafia. The cast also includes Lee Beom-soo, Hyun-young and Oh Ji-ho.

Jo In Sung, "Disappointed that nobody recognized me in Japan"

"I was disappointed that nobody recognized me in Japan, but I don't understand how so many people could have come today."

Jo In Sung met with 3,000 or so members of his official club on the 21st at 3pm and 7pm at the Tokyo Bunkyo Civic Big Hall.

Jo In Sung held a birthday party at the fan meeting and spoke with fans about his recent movie 'A Dirty Carnival' as well as his personal life.

He also requested a camera to be installed on stage and took a picture of the 3,000 fans receiving applause.

Jo In Sung commented, "I'm nervous and is a rather different experience as I've never been on a stage this big. It is a completely different feeling from filming a drama or movie."

Especially in regards to his trip to Japan, Jo In Sung said, "I backpacked for 5 days and 4 nights and toured the city riding the subway. I didn't understand Japanese so I missed stops and had to walk for hours." He also admitted that he was somewhat disappointed that nobody recognized him.

When asked by one fan about his girlfriend and thoughts about love, Jo In Sung responded, "I personally like the line from the movie Tian mi mi (Comrades: Almost a Love Story), 'I believe the time I loved you most, was when you were not by my side.' When two people meet for a long time, the flattering feelings and what seems to be the feeling of love may go away, but I believe that is true love. I believe one day I will be able to experience such love."

Lastly, Jo In Sung said to his fans, "I will put effort into making my acting be with everyone, and hope that you will be on my side as I mature."

Meanwhile, Jo In Sung will attend one more fan meeting on the 23rd in Osaka and return to Korea on the 25th.

Japanese Newspaper Praises Song Gang-ho

A Japanese newspaper lavished acclaim on Korean actor Song Gang-ho, advising Japanese moviegoers to take note of any film with the actor's name on its list of credits.

The Japanese daily Mainichi Shimbun said Thursday, "If there are two types of Korean actors popular in Japan, one consists of actors like Bae Yong-jun and the other of character actors like Song Gang-ho. Song is an actor who devotes himself to acting."

The Japanese newspaper reported, "Song played a wide range of roles from a soldier to a wrestler, murderer, barber and explorer. In particular, the movie 'Memory of Murder' served as a turning point for him. Recognized for his brilliant capability to portray various characters, his work schedule is booked tight for the next two years." The newspaper told movie fans to pay attention to any film in which Song appears.

The newspaper quoted the Korean actor as saying, "I don't choose a work based on what message the film conveys. In a movie, the director's worldview is what counts most for me. So I decided to appear in the films 'Host' and 'Memory of Murder' with only a rough sketch of the movies' storylines, since I learned that Bong Jun-ho would direct them."

Song told the Japanese newspaper, "I don't like monster movies and the plot of the movie 'Host' was utterly strange. But I decided to appear in the movie since I trust director Bong."

Japanese Media to Cover Lee Byung-heon's Film Shoot

Journalists from some 30 Japanese media outlets will cover the filming of actor Lee Byung-heon's upcoming movie.

A person from the movie's production company KM Culture said that some three dozen Japanese media outlets have already expressed their desire to cover the filming on August 28 in South Jeolla Province. Another official said the number of Japanese journalists will amount to 60-70, on par with the number of Korean journalists expected to visit the filming site that day.

The reason so many Japanese media outlets are eager to cover Lee's acting despite the somewhat inconvenient location is the actor's popularity in Japan. Media outlets that will be unable to dispatch their reporters to the scene will visit the filming site later.

The new movie is a story about the past and present of a man cherishing the memories of his first love. Lee plays the movie's main character, Yoon Seok-young, and acts opposite actress Su Ae, who plays Seok-young's first love, Jung-in.

The Japanese movie distributor SPO bought the movie for four million dollars even before its filming began. In the past, SPO had imported a host of South Korean movies, including "Almost Love," "My Tutor Friend" and "Fighter in the Wind," among others.

About 70 percent of Lee's upcoming movie has been filmed so far. The movie will open in the second half of this year.

There's More to Life Than Acting, Says Shin Ae-ra

Shin Ae-ra is a veteran actress with 17 years of experience. For a long time, however, she became a byword along with her husband Cha In-pyo for their exemplary life as a couple. The Chosun Ilbo met her as her latest film 'Ice Kekii' was released Thursday. The movie is about a boy who runs a makeshift ice cream parlor to earn money for a trip to Seoul to meet his father. Shin plays the boy's mother, who has a difficult time as a single mother. Didn't she feel constrained when the press always insists on her model marriage?

This is your big-screen debut.

It was not only my first movie but also my first experience acting in a historical drama and speaking Jeolla dialect. It was a whole new experience and I really liked it.

What did you imagine the single mother you play is like?

I thought she must have been an extraordinary woman, being courageous enough to raise a child as a single mom at that time. She is just a fragile woman, but she has become used to the tough life to protect her child from a hostile world and sometimes engage in battles with the world.

There are actors who seem to bet everything on their acting and live a passionate life. You are certainly not that kind of actor, are you?

They are real actors. In that sense, I think their sometimes irregular life needs to be respected. I do my best as an actress. But I don't think that I am as passionate or capable as they are, and I wouldn't like to be either. I believe that God has given me a job other than acting to do.

What is that job?

It may be related to taking care of children. I believe that the reason my husband and I became celebrities is that God designed things this way to give us a well-intentioned job to do. I support 10 children in El Salvador and the Philippines via Compassion (Shin is goodwill ambassador for this organization) and it is such an encouraging experience to exchange letters with them. I hope that I'll be able to travel to those countries to see them when they grow up.

Doesn't it make you feel uncomfortable that the press only talks about your goodness?

I truly felt that when adopting my daughter Ye-eun (which means 'the blessing of Jesus'). We adopted her just because we love children so much and wanted to have a girl. We were really embarrassed because we didn't think that it was a big deal that merits a compliment. Now I realize that I don't have to strive to meet other people's expectations. If I try to, it would be hypocritical and there would be lots of restrictions on my behavior.

Japanese Fans to Throw Birthday Party for Bae Yong-jun

Japanese fans of actor Bae Yong-jun will throw a birthday party for their favorite hallyu star August 28 at the Capital Tokyo Hotel in Tokyo.

Held on the eve of Bae's 34th birthday, the party will be attended by some 400 Japanese fans, with events including the donation of a platinum ring featuring Bae's initials. Bae himself will be unable to attend the event due to his busy schedule.

The actor visited Japan during his previous birthday to attend the premiere of his latest movie "April Snow" but this year he has to stay in Korea to film the upcoming TV epic drama "Taewangsashingi".

Bae's agency, BOF, said the actor will spend his birthday quietly, as he did last year, because he has been busy filming the drama.

Bae has also had his hands full doing business in Korea and abroad. Last month, he attended the opening of his traditional Korean restaurant "Goshire" in Tokyo.

The fantasy epic drama "Taewangsashingi" will premiere in Korea early next year.

The actor, who has been the face of TheFACEshop for three years, will hold press conferences and leave his handprints in cement in Singapore and Jakarta as well as taking part in fan meet-n-greets. Most importantly, an Orchid Naming Ceremony will add "Kwon Sang-woo" to Singapore's National Orchid Garden.

Other stippled hybrids there are named after Laura Bush, the U.S. first lady, and her Korean counterpart, President Roh Moo-hyun's wife Kwon Yang-sook. Following this first round of visits, TheFACEshop plans a second tour, that will include Taiwan and the Philippines in October.
