Villa shines as Spain open campaign with big win
tribalfooball.com - September 02, 2006

David Villa strick twice as Spain thumped Liechtenstein to kick off their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

First-half goals by strikers Fernando Torres and Villa got the ball rolling, before Villa - with his second - and Luis Garcia garnished the scoreline as Luis Aragones' men returned to competitive action two months after their second-round defeat to France in Germany.

Aragones went with an attacking 4-3-3 formation from the off, Raul joining Torres and Villa up front, and it paid almost immediate dividends when Mariano Pernia's close-range shot needed to be well saved by goalkeeper Peter Jehle in the first minute.

The deadlock was broken in the 20th minute, Villa supplying Torres, who provided an unforgiving finish from 12 yards into the top corner.

Spain continued to dominate possession, although they failed to create a clear-cut chance until the second goal arrived in the 45th minute, Villa guiding the ball home right-footed from 12 yards from the right of the penalty area.

Torres could have notched his second of the night in the 58th minute but his header from close range was kept out by Jehle.

It did not matter as three minutes later, the hosts scored the third when Villa finished low from the centre of the penalty area for his second of the night.

The fourth came in the 65th minute from Garcia, who had come on as a replacement for Villa.

Pernia sent in a textbook cross from the left and the Liverpool forward applied a right-footed finish from six yards.

Spain eased off in the final quarter, but they will have tougher challenges ahead in Group F.

Spain coach Luis Aragones, who has kept faith with virtually the same squad that faltered in the last 16 of the World Cup finals in Germany, said he was pleased with the performance.

"We controlled the ball at all times, played well, created a lot of chances and scored four goals," he said. "We achieved what we set out to do and I don't think we were lacking in any areas."

Aragones's counterpart Martin Andermatt said he too was content.

"We are satisfied because we didn't concede any more goals," he added. "Spain are a great side and they were much better than us."

:clap:GO DAVID VILLA:clap:

Valencia's Joaquin: I could've been Real Madrid player
tribalfooball.com - September 03, 2006

Valencia's record signing Joaquin admits he could be wearing the colours of Real Madrid if Florentino Perez had remained president.

"Perhaps, yes, it could have happened," said the £16.5 million winger. "But that is history.

"The case of Real Madrid is now over. Now I'm with Valencia and Betis are winners with £16.5 million.

"The time was right to leave. I will be a Betico all my life, but I'm 25 and the seriousness with which Valencia came in for me convinced me that the time was right to move."

On the 8,000-plus fans that greeted him at the Mestalla last week, Joaquin added: "It pleased me greatly to see so many people. Now I need to repay them. Valencia are a great club, it's project is always to be amongst the best at home and in Europe. I have joined a great club."

Ayala vows commitment to Che

Roberto Ayala looks set to return for Valencia on Saturday after declaring his intent to leave the club earlier this summer.

The 33-year-old Argentinian stopper was named in Fifa's All-Star World Cup squad after impressing for his country in Germany.

But a disagreement with club officials over his contract extension saw him openly declare his desire to quit Estadio Mestalla.

While a host of top flight clubs from England and Spain were rebuffed in their moves for the experienced Che man, he now looks set to start in the important Liga game away at Atletico Madrid on Saturday, and appears happy to do so.

"I am not worried by my quotes in the last few weeks," Ayala explained.

"I am an open and truthful person and my opinion is important. Life takes many twists and turns, but for now I am only interested in the present.

"I want to win the coach's confidence to play. We have had a lot of time to assess the situation but I would never abscond.

"I took my time to decide whether to stay in Valencia or not.

"Now I am 100 percent committed to Valencia because I am a total professional."
