My goal is to keep delivering hits: Akshay

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is loving his success after making the transformation from ''wooden'' action hero to comedy star, he said in an interview published Wednesday.
Despite a string of recent success he won't be limiting himself to comedy and his goal is to keep up his successful run at the Indian box office, he said in the March issue of Filmfare magazine. Kumar, a martial arts expert, was initially pegged as an action hero but failed to impress.

But he shrugged off that label and tried his hand at comedy with resounding success in movies such as ''Hera Pheri'' (Hustling), ''Awara Paagal Deewana'' (Vagabond Mad Crazy) and ''Garam Masala'' (Hot Spice). ''The last two years have been fabulous,'' he said. ''At this stage of my career it means living up to my expectations.''

Kumar, who has acted in more than 70 movies since his 1991 debut, says it's been a tough journey from being panned by critics to being nominated for movie awards. ''I remember everything that's been written about me,'' he said. ''Not only did they (critics) call me wooden, they even poked fun at me. Now apart from rave reviews, I even figure in the nomination lists for awards.''

Despite his success with comedy, Kumar says he will not restrict himself to the genre. ''Comedy comes easily to me,'' he said, adding that he is rejecting pure comic roles because he doesn't want to be labeled a comic actor. ''Please, I don't want such tags.''

His new movies include ''Jaaneman'' (Sweetheart), ''Phir Hera Pheri'' (Some More Hustling) and ''Family.'' In ''Jaaneman'' he acts along side veteran actor Anupam Kher and current stars Salman Khan and Preity Zinta.

I抳e also had int抣 offers, says John

Bollywood's rising star John Abraham, whose recent films Zinda and Taxi No. 9 2 11 have done well at the box office, says he would like to reach the global audience with an Indian theme like in Deepa Mehta's film Water.

"In Canada Water has catered to an all-white audience. And they were completely taken aback. If I have to reach to a global audience I'd rather do it through a film on an Indian theme like Water," said John.

Water depicts the plight of widows in the 1930s' India. John plays an idealistic young man who falls in love with a widow played by Lisa Ray.

The film won the Best Film award in at the Bangkok International Film Festival last month. It has also proved a smash hit in Canada, having opened five film festivals and grossed almost two million dollars at the Canadian box office since November.

John is a big fan of Amitabh Bachchan and feels indebted to him because when most of the established actresses refused to work with him, Big B came to his rescue.
"At a time when big heroines refused to work with me Mr Amitabh Bachchan worked with me in Aetbaar. Mr. Bachchan and Bipasha (Basu) have been very supportive. I am very close to Abhishek and the entire Bachchan family. I wouldn't want anyone to say anything negative about them," John said in an interview.

Your performance in Deepa Mehta's Water has been widely appreciated?
Not too many people in India have seen it. And I didn't tom-tom it. It's such beautiful film. In Canada Water has catered to an all-white audience. And they were completely taken aback. We have never had reactions like that before. For them the whole concept of the film was alien. It's one thing for audiences here to call out 'John Abraham'. It was quite another when they did it there. If I have to reach to a global audience I'd rather do it through a film on an Indian theme like Water.

Has it opened doors for you abroad?
I have had offers. But I don't want to proclaim like other actors out here that I am doing a Hollywood project. Here they don't seem to know the difference between Hollywood and any other international project. I wouldn't like to make a fool of myself by making such proclamations. There's no offer that I'd like to talk about. I am considering some. But I am doing none till next year.

But you're doing Deepa Mehta's Komagata Maru?
Yeah... but we still need to finalise dates. Honestly, for the other role she needs Mr Amitabh Bachchan. Only he can do justice to it. He's a rock star. Mine is more a Bhagat Singh kind of a role.
What new films have you signed?
I am doing Nikhil Advani's Salaam-E-Ishq with Vidya Balan. She's damn sweet. It would be a nice different pairing. I have signed Sriram Raghavan's sweet romantic comedy Happy Birthday. We start this in July-August. Sriram is super-talented. And his concept is so interesting. I am also doing a film with a new director, Babar, to be shot in Baghdad, Iraq.

I am choosing very, very carefully. I need to work with filmmakers who'd get the best out of me. I still need that one huge film in my career. I am doing a Yash Raj film in 2006. My new film Taxi No. 9 2 11 is out. I recently saw an uncut version without background music. The movie took me completely by surprise. It is really entertaining. It's a fun movie and I have a light role.

How's life been lately?
2005 was good but hectic. I feel I got far more appreciation from the audience than the success of my films would suggest. I am relatively successful. I am not being humble. I am just being honest. I want to be more successful.

It's been a gruelling time for me. I shot in Afghanistan. Then I came back and was in hospital for a really long time. I've been asked to be very careful for the next three to four months. A relapse of typhoid is like... deadly! The docs (doctors) told me it's my call now. I am not supposed to overwork.

What happened?
I was shooting in Afghanistan. It's a country in transition. Twenty-six years of war has ruined it. But within their means they were outstandingly hospitable.

Zinda was Sanjay Dutt's film through and through!
It was. But I feel my role was very powerful. It required very little of my time. But I am omnipresent. I remember Sanjay Gupta had come to me with his next film. But he wanted me to hear Zinda. It was obvious that Sanjay Dutt was doing the older man. I was immediately interested in the other role. Sanjay Gupta wanted someone who could match the other actor's physicality... I am happy with the footage I have in Zinda.

So footage isn't an issue?
Not at all! What Sanjay Gupta narrated to me, he delivered. Even in Dhoom I came into the narration after 40 minutes. I had no songs, no leading lady. The important thing is how honestly you deliver within the space given.

Was there a security threat in Afghanistan?
If I needed publicity I could put out my 'Diaries From Kabul' and it'd become a bestseller. Or maybe we could make a film on what happened there. But everything was well taken care of by the Afghan government and Yash Raj Films. It was my choice to shoot a film that had to be shot in Afghanistan.

How has your career been so far?
The industry has been very patient with me. At a time when big heroines refused to work with me Mr Amitabh Bachchan worked with me in Aetbaar. Mr Bachchan and Bipasha (Basu) have been very supportive. I am very close to Abhishek and the entire Bachchan family. I wouldn't want anyone to say anything negative about them. In their unspoken way they have been very supportive... Abhishek is the co-star I am most comfortable with. You can't take away from that boy's success. He has worked hard for it.

Any new endorsements?
Yes, I have signed on as UN ambassador for drugs and crime. And I am the sole ambassador for diet Pepsi in India... Good fun. I'll endorse only a product that matches my image, physically and psychologically. I won't do alcohol. In real life I don't even touch wine. It's not a morality issue. I just don't like the smell of alcohol.

Madhuri Dixit: Back in Mumbai

Yes, Madhuri Dixit's back in India for a longish holiday. Her first public appearance at the Filmfare Awards got her a standing ovation.
Now, the actress plans to make a Bollywood comeback. She tells Subhash K Jha more about her plans.

After the kind of response you got for your performance at the Filmfare Awards, are you planning to return to cinema?

Yes, I will probably do one film a year. There are lots of offers, and I need to listen to the scripts and decide what to do. It has to be a project convenient both for me as well as the producer, in terms of location, etc. Looking after my home and children, I can still take time off for one movie, but coming down here for the shooting would be tough. We must remember that a lot of Bollywood movies are now made in the US.

Would it be difficult for producers in Mumbai to reach you in LA?

The world is becoming such a small place. People sitting in Hong Kong do business with people in India. So, communication is no problem.

What prompted that live performance at the Filmfare Awards?
I didn't think I was going to perform. I was in Mumbai to chill out, have a holiday. Filmfare approached me and Rikku persuaded me. As I wasn't out of shape, he thought I could do it. Also, considering I had been with the industry for so long, I thought it would be nice to catch up with all my colleagues through my performance.

Most people feel there can never be another Madhuri Dixit.

Audiences still send me fan mail. To be loved and cherished is a beautiful feeling. Talent never dies. I was very apprehensive about dancing on stage. I hadn't done it for four years. To my surprise, it wasn't difficult. Even Saroj (Khan) said it didn't look as if I had been away for so long. Acting and dancing is hard to forget.

We noticed you only danced to songs from Devdas.

Yes, I have had the chance to perform my earlier hit songs at the Filmfare Awards. I had never performed the Devdas tracks before. They have a great dignity about them, and a touch of the classical. That element in dancing is really close to my heart.

Do you miss the film industry?
It depends on what you mean by the industry. If you mean the paraphernalia, I don't miss that. But I miss my craft, the preparation for scenes, the nervousness before every shot and all that dhak dhak. But I hardly have the time to think of this in LA. My children are young -- 1 and 3 years old -- and demanding. But, in quieter moments, I do think about my studio life.

The older son will soon get to know how famous his mom is.

He got a taste of it when he went to a doctor in Mumbai. A photographer followed us and clicked us. You should have seen how delighted my son was.

Your sons are the only ones not aware of your stardom.

Absolutely. When I came home after performing at the Filmfare Awards, they refused to recognise me with all that makeup. They couldn't watch me, even on TV. It was too late by the time my performance came on. But yes, once in LA, I tried to show them my songs. They weren't interested. And when I showed my son my face on the DVD of Devdas he casually said, 'That's you, mom'. He doesn't connect with my stardom. It would be fun to see how they react to Madhuri the star.

Do you miss the adulation?
Not at all. I'm too busy being the wife and mom. It was a dream for me to have my own family. And I have it today. I have grown up in a big family. It was very important for me to have one of my own. As important as my stardom, in fact more. I enjoyed the acting, but I was sure of how many years I'd give my career. After enjoying every bit of that, I am now enjoying domesticity.

I am sure you get recognised in LA.

Oh yes. In the malls. They come up to have a picture taken with me. That's it. They mean well.

You have come back to a different film industry.

Yes. Today's films are technically much more advanced. And as Hindi cinema now goes to many parts of the world, they are aesthetically far better than the earlier films. I look at some my earlier films and cringe. But that was what filmmaking was about then. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Though it's great to see the changes. I love the care taken to look into details.

Do you have lots of friends in the industry?
Not many, but I have lots of well-wishers. And I know that if they have something in mind, they will approach me. The project has to be worth my while.

There were three films I was supposed to do two years ago, but they didn't happen because I got pregnant. I suppose bringing up a baby was more exciting than doing a movie at that point. Now, people who come to me do so with concrete characters, not just random offers. That's wonderful. I'm open to all kinds offers as long as I'm not asked to do anything boring.

Have you watched any films lately?

I saw a few songs from Bunty Aur Babli and love Kajra Re. Parineeta is the only film I have seen. I liked it.

You would have fitted in very nicely there.

But Vidya Balan has done a wonderful job. Now that I'm here, I plan to leave the two boys with my parents and catch up with new films.

Ramu to re-launch Karan Nath?

While his father Rikku Rakesh Nath has been instrumental in stars making it big in Bollywood by handling their work, son Karan Nath has been struggling hard to make his name in the industry.

Having started early in life as a child artist in Shekhar Kapoor抯 Mr. India, Karan Nath made his debut on the silver screen as a hero with Joy Augustine抯 Paagalpan. The film bombed. However, Kuku Kohli tried to resurrect his career with Yeh Dil Aashiqana, which was supposed to be his actual debut.

Two failures later, Karan Nath returned with an impressive performance in Ssshhh with Tanisha. Hard luck again. This film also bombed at the box office. He played a small cameo in JP Dutta抯 Loc Kargil , with not much luck again. Karan Nath抯 last film was Tum  opposite Manisha Koirala, which was in the sleaze bracket.

Now the news is that Ram Gopal Varma is all set to re-launch Karan Nath in one of his untitled venture as per sources, in a very big way, though no one is willing to go on record. However, sources from The Factory reveal that Ramu is really re-launching Karan Nath on Rikku抯 request.

One will have to wait for the official announcement by the maker, till then one can only wish that Ramu will resurrect Karan Nath抯 standing in Bollywood as a good performer.

"Madhuri even agreed to one-and-a-half minute kiss with ...."!

Remember, the erotic scenes of film 'Dayavan', where sizzling Madhuri Dixit seen kissing Vinod Khanna for more than a minute. Remember what Madhuri had said after it became a hot talking point overnight, "I didn't know what I was doing." However actor Feroz Khan, who had produced the film called Madhuri's statement a vague; reminding the scene recently in an interview, the King Khan said, "It's fact that 'Dayavan' happened earlier in her career, but it provided the much-needed boost. At the time, she even agreed to one-and-a-half minute kiss with Vinod Khanna in this film." But after that Madhuri swore she would never do it again. Feroz recalled, "She was quoted as saying she didn't know what she was doing." But Feroz thinks that statement was a little vague. "It wasn't' as if I was standing with a gun to her head during the scene. I guess, she was upset because she comes from an educated, conservative family," gushed Feroz.

"I wouldn't have any regrets to fall in love with a married man," Esha!

Esha Deol is all set to change her image from that of the girl-next-door. Esha essays the character of Kavya in forthcoming 'Ankhee' who is obsessed with a married man. "Whenever you have a woman falling in love with a married man, people automatically feel that she plays the second fiddle in a relationship," she says. "But if you see it in perspective, it's just another love story. In our society, we have these unwritten taboos, which make no sense to me. I respect marriage as an institution, but then falling in love can't be 'logical'."

Is she justifying a woman falling in love with a married man? "If you're talking about me, I will certainly not start looking for a married man to fall in love with, but if I ever fall in love with a married man, I wouldn't have any regrets either," she says.

Women on Top!

The Bollywood arena may have been a man's world, but the women have sure made their place in it. These days we find many women occupying the director's chair and calling the shots. And there's more. They do it as well as the men, if not better. Indiatimes Movies celebrates the spirit of these women director's who have done much in making their mark in the male-dominated territory... and their numbers are increasing!

Pooja Bhatt
She made her name as actress. But filmmaking was in her genes. Pooja Bhatt has had her share of success and failures as far as production is concerned. And as for direction

Bipasha goes deglam!

Currently you are in Brazil, shooting for Sanjay Gadhvi's Dhoom2. What has the experience been like?
I would have loved to give you the details, but we all are under contract and can't talk about the project until we get a green signal from Yashraj Films. I can say that it's a fun film, and we all are having a blast here. It's great to work with Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Uday Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan.

Can you explain your new caller tone that goes as follows - "Hello. can't hear you. Can you speak a bit louder? Bad network ya. Hello. Just a minute. Can you hear me now?" Is this some kind of prank you enjoy playing on your callers?
(Laughs loudly) I am not a phone person at all. I have a cellphone to stay connected with my secretary, John and my family. I have always been a brat and hence the caller tone.

Is it true that you are working with Rituparno Ghosh in Draupadi?
Yes. I am glad that Rituparno wanted to cast me in his film. In fact, we were supposed to work in a Bengali film but things didn't work out. I want to do a Bengali film because my parents are pressurising me to do so and have threatened to throw me out of my house if I don't work in at least one Bengali film. Besides all this, what could be better than Draupadi?

It was reported that you were the mediator in the patch-up between Ghosh and John Abraham?
John and I never discuss our work and distance our professional lives from our personal relationship. We attend each others' film premieres and the maximum I do is to forward his number to whoever wants to get in touch with him. That's it. Having said that, I don't think that Ritu ever had a problem with John, they are going to be working together sooner or later.

Let's talk about your favourite topic, John.
Oh no. John is so boring. every second day he is written about in newspapers. I don't want to talk about him, there is nothing new to add at the moment. People have read enough about him. My life is also about my Ma, Baba, sisters and my dog, Poshto.

Talking about films then, post Apaharan have you been making an extra effort to be part of realistic cinema. You have completed Madhur Bhandarkar's Corporate and now you are working on Vishal Bharadwaj's Omkara. Has it been a deliberate decision to break free from your sex siren-image?
I only sign films when I am convinced about the subject, and I don't really bother about the genre. I have seen all of Madhur Bhandarkar's films and appreciate his work. Earlier, Madhur's films used to be about lower strata of society. This time he is dealing with the corporate world, which required a certain amount of grandeur at the production level. So the film looks rich and the presentation is real. As far as breaking away from my sexy image, I don't think that it is a conscious effort.

This will be your first woman-centric film. Does the success of this film depend on you? You'll have to understand that this film is not just about me. It has many sub-plots. I play the role of a working woman in this film and can identify with the character. We have to accept the fact that it is a man's world and as women, we need to struggle to accomplish our goals.

Did you have to work on your acting skills while working with Madhur, because barring your miniscule role in Apaharan, you have limited experience in this kind of cinema?
I have always felt that commercial cinema is more difficult that realistic cinema. I think reality comes naturally to me. I read somewhere that Madhur asked me to wash my face because I had put on make-up, which is untrue, because I appear without any make-up in this film. I feel that I need to put in an extra effort to break into a dance sequence or rattle certain dialogues, which I would never do in real life.

SRK and RGV to go back in time

Ram Gopal Varma has always claimed that he does not work with stars. He prefers creating his own stars. Known for giving Bollywood some of its most outstanding talent, Ram Gopal Varma has till recently worked only with fresh talent or lesser known faces, to mould them to suit his sensibilities. But with Sarkar he broke his self-imposed diktat and worked with the biggest star of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan himself. With Sarkar having been a success with the masses and the classes, Ram Gopal Varma is now all set to sign the Badshah of Bollywood himself, Shah Rukh Khan.

Shah Rukh himself is looking forward to working with one of Bollywood's most creative and unconventional directors. It is rumoured that the theme they will work on is not going to be any run-of-the-mill story. The Factory, Ram Gopal Verma's production house, is known for coming up with unusual and at times, downright quirky plots like Darna Mana Hai and now Darna Zaroori Hai.

It is believed that the two will work in a movie based on time travel and will be a sci-fi thriller. Verma had earlier approached Shah Rukh to be a part of his remake of Sholay but the star at that time did not have dates to spare.

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh was a Bengali dancer in his previous birth!

San Francisco based Dr. Walter Semkiw calls himself a regression therapist and has been studying re-birth and re-incarnation by matching behavioral patterns of several famous personalities with those from the past. And his research has shown him that Shah Rukh Khan is a reincarnation of Bengali dancer Sadhona Bose.

Semkiw is presently in the Indian capital to release his book 態orn Again

Sanjay Dutt: A friend in need!

He抯 the strong, silent kind, so it抯 not often that Sanjay Dutt ventures to speak to strangers, leave alone the media. But even the Deadly Dutt couldn抰 stop himself from congratulating director Milan Luthria, a close friend for years, for a job well done in Taxi No 9211. Salman-Sajid: Hit duo!

Karan Johar-Shah Rukh are often called the golden jodi of Bollywood because of their hits together, but we couldn抰 help noticing yet another emerging (if not emerged) jodi - we抮e talking about Sajid Nadiadwala and Salman Khan. The duo have given successful hits such as Judwaa, Jeet and Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, and now they will soon be back with Jaaneman. A little birdie couldn抰 help noticing, however, that while Karan shines with SRK, Sajid has other 慻olden boys

Dino Morea: Missing his lady love?

It抯 almost become a trend in tinsel ville - when one is away on long shooting spells - the other oh-so-lonely better half joins the movie gang in the other part of the world. The dashing Ness Wadia did more than join his Preity gal on the sets of Salaam Namaste abroad; he was even seen in one frame of the film for a few seconds. The lovely Rosa enjoys giving Saif company on his shoots, so that love is all around wherever he goes. Diya comforts cancer patients

Diya Mirza took some time out on Wednesday, Women's Day, to meet with patients at the Cancer Patients Aids Association in Mumbai.

A special screening of Chingaari -- Kalpana Lajme's film about a prostitute and a priest -- was held for the patients, and the filmmaker was joined by Diya and vocalist Ila Arun.

Considering Diya wasn't part of Chingaari, this just might be a rare, genuine Bollywood gesture.

Nagma, the survivor

She has acted in nine languages. One upon a time, she was the reigning queen of Tamil and Telugu cinema. Then she disappeared from the movie radar, joined Sri Sri Ravishankar's Art of Living foundation in Bangalore, became a staunch devotee, and even taught courses there.
Yes, it's Nagma we are talking about.

If you are wondering what the actress has been up to lately, you will have to go the sets of a Bhojpuri movie, Raja Thakur, being shot at Essel studio in Trombay, Mumbai.

Bollywood star-turned member of Parliament Shatrughan Sinha is playing the title role. The hero of the movie is Bhojpuri superstar Manoj Tiwari. Nagma is the heroine.

This is not her first Bhojpuri film. She has done nine of them, including the superhit Panditwa Mera Shaadi Kab Hoi, directed by Tinu Verma.

Verma is the director of Raja Thakur as well. Out of the nine Bhojpuri films Nagma has acted in so far, Verma has helmed five. He is a man full of energy. When it gets too hot, he takes off his shirt and continues directing in his undershirt.

The scene being shot is full of fights, with fires burning all over the set. "Look how many people I'm killing for you," Verma quips to Nagma.

"I like to do new things rather than remain in the same comfort zone. For growth, and to avoid stagnation, you would want a change.
There is competition everywhere. You should be a leader -- lead a different path altogether and be a trendsetter. I have been a success in whatever I have done. I joined politics. I was offered a seat in Parliament.

I preferred being a party worker as I was not through with movies. If I wanted to become a member of Parliament I would need to give 100 per cent to my constituency -- which I could not at that point of time. So I did not contest elections.

Today I am acting in Bhojpuri films, I don't know what I will be doing tomorrow. The last Tamil movie I acted in was Pista.

I took a break as I was too exhausted after 12 years of continuous work. I joined Art of Living and took classes there.

But I kept my contacts in the film industry alive. I did guest appearances in Hindi movies, music videos -- when everyone was doing them -- and small but significant roles.

I did a couple of Kannada movies with T Vasu. I did a Malayalam movie called Chathurangam with Mohanlal. I started a clothing line called Nagma's. Then I got into politics.

"I feel youngsters should lead changes in society. My movie Baaghi, with Salman Khan, had a message against child prostitution and exploitation.
People have given me so much love and respect. I have to pay them back in some way. You have to have a platform and the power to do something. I wanted a secular platform.

My mom is Muslim and my dad is Hindu. We were brought up to respect all religions. Communal riots pained me. I wanted to do something. So I joined politics.

I have just completed a Punjabi film. There are some Hindi movies in the pipeline too.

I did Bhojpuri like any other language movie. I did Ganga, with Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini. I have signed Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu's Bhojpuri film too.

I am a commerce graduate. I was interested in business. My father made movies. My mother always said that the greatest gift a parent can give a child is education. She insisted that girls should be financially independent even before marriage.

"I got film offers, took them up, and it became my career. I don't dream. I never dreamt that Tamil Nadu would welcome me with open arms. I never thought that South India would give me so much popularity. I have done a Bengali movie too. I will do a couple of other languages too. I am just going with the flow.
With Bhojpuri I am winning over a new population, which is bigger than the South. It will help in my political career in the future.

I am an instrument of my guru Sri Sri Ravishankarji.

For my second Bhojpuri film Dulhan Milal Dilwali, I got an award. After 1961, this is the first time a Bhojpuri film is getting an award.

I shoot a lot. Sometimes 20 to 22 hours. Last three months have been very busy. Last year I released two movies. That's not good for a heroine. A heroine should have one movie releasing every two months.

I don't know when it is a Sunday. I just work. I don't even know which day of the week today is.

Nothing is more fulfilling than working in films or taking an Art of Living class. The students saw me first as a star. But later, they respected me as a teacher too.

"Among the numerous superstars I have worked both in the North and the South, there has to be something exceptional to differentiate a star from a superstar. Each one is unique in his own way.
By far my favourite is Rajnikanth. He is a very different, down to earth. When he walks into a set or walks out, nobody knows. He is so silent! I feel a star is a star when he doesn't do anything to attract attention to himself.

I have never met anyone who is a richer person at heart than he is. The more you speak about him the less it is.

I am very fond of Aamir (Khan). Vinod Khanna was my idol at one time. He was my He-Man. I used to really admire him and got a chance to work with him.

I liked Rajkumar and got a chance to work with him also. I have worked with Amitji (Bachchan).

There is nobody bigger than Dilip Kumar in filmdom, and now I am doing a film for him.

I have no regrets. There is nothing left for me to do. I am just enjoying myself."
