NEWS FLASH!
This and That Dept.: Starring in commercials can boost a star's visibility and bank account. Interested in finding out who the leaders in the field are and how much they charge? Grab a copy of the February issue of Nikkei Entertainment magazine, which ranks the 200 top TV commercial talents for 2005 based on how much they charge.
It is no surprise that the nation's most profitable acronym sits at the top of the list. SMAP can request between 250 million yen and 300 million yen for a commercial. The magazine suggests it might be a better bargain to hire them individually rather than go for the fab five together.
Next on the list is New York Yankees slugger Hideki Matsui at 170 million yen and Ichiro of the Seattle Mariners at 150 million yen. An Academy Award nomination has helped Ken Watanabe move up to 130 million yen. "Yon-sama" has joined Akashiya Sanma and Sayuri Yoshinaga, the highest paid Japanese female TV commercial talent, in the 100 million yen club.
Singer Ayumi Hamazaki, and actresses Nanako Matsushima and Tomoko Yamaguchi, in the 80 million yen category, are the only other Japanese women in the Top 25. Yamaguchi's staying power is impressive since she has not appeared in a regular continuing series in a very long time. But, then again, why not choose a commercial over something like Fukigen na Jiin?
