Grant Clears Up Shevchenko Situation

Chelsea boss Avram Grant has said Andriy Shevchenko is not injured, despite the Ukrainian being taken off at half-time against Valencia.



Chelsea's already successful Group B Champions League campaign petered out with a 0-0 draw at home to Valencia on Tuesday night.  


The biggest concern for fans after the game, however, was that Andriy Shevchenko may have picked up an injury.  
In Didier Drogba's absence, the Blues are already stretched at that end of the pitch, and fears grew as Shevchenko did not emerge for the second half against the Spanish side.  

Pre-Planned Substitution
But speaking after the game, Chelsea boss Avram Grant assured everyone that the decision to replace the Ukrainian striker was purely tactical - and a pre-planned move at that.  
"The decision to bring Shevchenko off at half-time was made before the game," he explained.  "We knew he was playing three games in eight days and there are many more matches to come.  
"It was a decision that Shevchenko and Frank Lampard would not play for 90 minutes, because this match was not important for qualification.  Shevchenko knew before the game that he would be coming off.  

Ready For Arsenal
"Maybe if he had stayed on the pitch he would have scored, but we felt it more important that he keep his physical condition.  He has not played many full games so we need to keep him in shape," continued Grant, adding "he is supposed to play [against Arsenal] on Sunday."

As group winners, Chelsea's name will be paired with a sidefinishing second in their group. With Arsenal and Liverpool bothrunners-up, the chance of drawing a club from Groups A or H has beenruled out and we cannot play Schalke from our own Group B at this nextstage.
That leaves Olympiacos, Celtic, Lyon, Roma and Fenerbah鏴 as the sides Avram Grant's men can meet.
