Unique holidays

By Frankie Chee
22 November 2005 - The Straits Times

If you are a seasoned traveller and wondering what's new out there, we have some suggestions

HERE are some diversions on the road less travelled.

UMA PARO HOTEL IN BHUTAN
Flip for it: For more adventurous folks, Bhutan is an ideal place to explore pristine mountain peaks. The country remains largely untouched by commercialisation and tourism.

Its rich culture and Buddhist traditions offer a different and unique experience.

The Uma Paro hotel is on a 15.3 ha site that sits atop a hill close to the town of Paro, one of the main cultural centres of Bhutan.

Paro is also home to the country's only airport.

Double flip: There are only 20 rooms and nine villas in the hotel, an exclusive holiday destination. The hotel, run by Como Hotels and Resorts, is a mix of modern and indigenous designs.

All rooms feature amenities like DVD players and yoga mats, and offer views of the forest, mountains or valley.

Cheque it out: Olympia Travel's four-day land package includes three nights' accommodation at Uma Paro, a two-day guided tour with all meals, one massage per person, airport transfers and taxes, but not airfare.

Prices range from US$2,628 (S$4,462) to US$6,336, depending on the type of accommodation.

The guided tour will take you to places such as the Bhutan National Museum, Paro Chhu river and Taktsang Monastery. Mountain biking and rafting are other optional activities.

Call Olympia Travels and Tours on 6732-3229.

SEVEN DAYS' GOLD COAST WILD DOLPHIN EXPERIENCE, AUSTRALIA
Flip for it: This package comes with something different for children. They get a specially-arranged breakfast at Dreamworld theme park with Spongebob Squarepants and his sidekick, Patrick.

After that, they can go wild at the other attractions, such as Nick Central, touted to be the coolest kids' zone in the world with 16 rides and attractions.

Double flip: Shopaholics will be let loose at Direct Factory Outlets in Brisbane. Get starstruck too at Movieworld and answer the call of the wild with an overnight stay at Tangalooma Wild Dolphin Resort, where you can feed the aquatic creatures.

Cheque it out: The package starts from $1,648, exclusively at CTC Holidays, Tel: 6532-0532.

SENDAI CITY
Flip for it: If you wish to steer clear of the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, Sendai is just the place for you in Japan.

Situated about four hours away from Tokyo by train, the modern but traditional city, with a population of only one million, boasts ample greenery and beautiful scenery.

Attractions within the city include temples and shrines, a children's space museum, hot springs and cheaper shopping than that of other major cities.

The cost of living in Sendai is about 10 per cent lower than that of Tokyo, and a night's stay at a four-star hotel costs around $140.

The Winter Starlight festival, which attracts 2.5 million visitors annually, is held from Dec 12 to 31. The city will be lit up and a street parade held to celebrate Christmas.

Double flip: The city also serves as a gateway to other places in the Tohoku region such as Matsushima, which is by the sea. You can enjoy big and juicy fresh oysters there. Another intriguing sight during winter is the Ice Monsters on Mount Zao, which are formed by the fallen snow upon the trees lining the mountain.

Sendai's famous delicacies include beef tongue steak and Zundamochi, a rice and green-bean cake. Their craftsmen are renowned for making Tansu - wooden chest sets - and Tsuishu lacquerware.

Cheque it out: While there are no direct flights from Singapore, tourists can catch a flight to Taipei on budget airline JetStar Asia and then fly direct to Sendai on Eva Air, instead of going via Tokyo.

The Loople-Sendai, a tourist bus that plies the major attractions within the city, costs 600 yen (S$8.60) per person for unlimited rides within the day.

For more information, call Prime Travel Follow Me Japan on 6221-4250.

HILTON CEBU RESORT & SPA IN THE PHILIPPINES
Flip for it: The resort on the tropical island of Mactan in Cebu, the Philippines, is a 246-room French Mediterranean-inspired paradise. It features a private beach, multiple dining outlets and marine activities such as deep-sea diving.

Launched on Oct 27 this year, it is situated just 10 minutes away from Mactan Airport and 25 minutes from Cebu City.

Sited within a complex of three post-modern buildings, the Hilton Cebu Resort & Spa has been designed to evoke a feeling of France's Cote de Azure.

Double flip: Leisure activities include windsurfing, jet skiing, diving and snorkelling.

The hotel's leisure centre has a gym, steam room, aerobics and tennis court. For the ultimate relaxation, there is a garden spa.

But if you get restless, there is always Cebu with its nightlife, shopping and 24-hour casinos to tempt you.

Cheque it out: Hilton Cebu and SilkAir have tied up to offer a three-day Free & Easy promotion from $458 per person.

The package includes return airfare on SilkAir, two nights' accommodation, daily breakfasts and airport transfers.

Available till the end of January next year, at least two passengers are required to travel together.

To book, contact Tradewinds Tours on 6438-8822.

ICE HOTEL IN FINLAND
Flip for it: If you have ever wondered what it feels like to live in an igloo, you can now experience it yourself.

SA Tours provides custom-made tours to Ice Hotel in Finland. It is a hotel made entirely of ice and is rebuilt each year because it melts when winter ends.

Travellers can also get an opportunity to see the rare and mesmerising Aurora Borealis - the Northern Lights - which is one of the seven wonders of the natural world.

Travellers will fly to Helsinki by FinnAir and then board a domestic flight to Kittila, where the Ice Hotel is.

The basic package, which is tailored to the traveller's desire, will also include a two or three-night tour and a one-night experience in the Ice Hotel.

Double flip: Other attractions in Finland include the Santa Claus Village, where children can have a chance to hug the jolly fella for a picture, an igloo village and a reindeer farm, where they can hopefully spot Rudolph.

Travellers can also choose to go on a reindeer sleigh ride, a husky-driven safari or go snow-mobiling.

Cheque it out: The package ranges from $3,500 to $4,500 per person. Call SA Tours on 6535-8911.

Weekend getaways
(For the budget-conscious)

By Sandra Leong
29 November 2005 - The Straits Times

Try off-the-beaten track venues this holiday season

NEED a break from the year-end rush, but don't have enough leave to spare to, say, wander around Europe? Relax, there are other options, such as weekend getaways.

That seems to be a popular choice among Singaporeans this holiday season, says Ms Susan Teng, managing director of travel agent Worldwide Honey Tours.

'They are taking more short-haul holidays,' she says.

Unfavourable exchange rates, and taxes like fuel surcharges have made travelling to far-off venues more expensive, she adds.

But that does not mean you have to settle for the usual shop/eat/sightsee trips to Bangkok, Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur.

Life! recommends some off-the-beaten-track diversions.

PENGARANG KELONG (Johor)

This kelong off the coast of Pengarang in Johor is great for an idyllic family retreat. Just an hour's bumboat ride from Changi Village jetty, this offshore fish farm is built on stilts.

Homegrown company Blazing Outdoor Adventurers & Co organises two-day-one-night weekend trips there on request.

For a minimum group size of 12, the cost per person is $75. Prices differ with the size of the group. The entire kelong can be booked for $3,400 for about 50 people.

Seafood meals and tidbits are included in the package though the organisers warn that experience is far from five-star.

Accommodation is bare - guests sleep on mattresses and air-conditioning is non-existent.

If nature calls, the loo is a simple hole in the floor that opens up into the sea beneath.

PULAU UBIN (Singapore)

Yes, there's sanctuary to be found in Singapore's own backyard of islands.

Marina Country Club's Ubin Resort is tucked away in a rustic mangrove setting and boasts a variety of outdoor activities like kayaking, rock-climbing and abseiling. Think Outward Bound, but a tad more luxurious.

Chalets are available for rent and are equipped with a refrigerator, a colour television, a water heater, an electric kettle and two skate scooters.

One-bedroom chalets are going at a promotional price of $98 per chalet per night while two-bedroom ones are $188 per chalet per night - till Dec 31.

Explore the island on bicycles, which can be rented from the village near the jetty. A handful of seafood restaurants are also open, though you can buy a do-it-yourself barbecue set from the resort at $38.

To get there, take the resort ferry which leaves from Marina Country Club off Punggol Road. Travelling time is about 30 minutes and the cost of transfer is included in the package price.

If you are up for a day trek in Ubin, check with adventure group Nature Trekker to see if there are any upcoming expeditions there. Privately-hired guides are also available for a maximum group of 20 per trip.

For more information on Marina Country Club's Ubin Resort, call 6388-8388, visit www.marinacountryclub.com.sg or e-mail [email protected]. For more information on Nature Trekker, call 9655-6555 or visit www.naturetrekker.org
DAMAI LAUT (Perak)

The place is not as famous as Langkawi but the beach-front destination of Damai Laut is a gem of a find.

Some of the distractions there include a turtle sanctuary, a mangrove forest - where you can go canoeing in the swamps - and a charcoal factory that is as old as the hills.

Central to the experience is the Swiss Garden Resort & Spa, a resort hotel set amid 171ha of natural rainforest that boasts a breathtaking sea view.

Konsortium Express & Tours offers a three-day-two-night package by coach - accommodation and breakfast at Swiss Garden included - from $198 for a triple share.

An optional guided tour to see the sights costs an additional $35 per person.

For more information, call Konsortium Express & Tours on 6392-3911 or e-mail [email protected]
