BARTON: I'VE HURT MYSELF
JOEY BARTON begged for a fresh start under Sam Allardyce at Newcastle yesterday by admitting he is "not proud" of the crime sheet which has blighted his career.
The fiery midfielder is determined to relaunch his prospects at St James' Park after being given a chance of rehabilitation on a high-profile stage.
Barton is on police bail for an attack on team-mate Ousmane Dabo during a Manchester City practice match, which forced the club to put him up for sale.
He was also in trouble for stubbing out a cigar in the eye of a City youth player amid a career littered with controversy.
Barton said: "I am not proud of some of the things I have done and I have brought a lot of my problems on myself.
"But I want to be a winner, not only for myself but for the fans.
"I have heard it said that footballers are all about flash cars and expensive watches - but for me it's all about winning medals and it hurts me that I haven't any."
Barton will complete his transfer today and be joined on Tyneside by Mark Viduka, who is set to sign a three-year contract after leaving Middlesbrough on a free.
"It's really great that Newcastle have pushed the boat out for me," added Barton, 25. "Both Freddy Shepherd and Sam Allardyce have made me feel so wanted." |

Viduka Undergoes Medical At Newcastle
Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka is undergoing a medical at Newcastle United today, with a view to completing a 'Bosman' free transfer to the Magpies.
The 31-year-old, who scored 19 goals for Middlesbrough last season, had been offered a new deal by Boro, while Portsmouth, West Ham United and Birmingham City were also said to be interested in signing the highly-rated Australian international.
Viduka had been on holiday with his family but is understood to want his future resolved by completing a transfer before heading off on international duty with the Socceroos at the Asian Cup.
Viduka, born in Melbourne into a Croatian family, began his career with Melbourne Knights before moving to Croatia Zagreb in 1995. He scored 40 goals in 84 League games in Croatia, then joined Celtic in the Scottish Premier League in the 1998-99 season, making 37 League appearances for the Bhoys and scoring 30 goals.
In 2000 came a transfer to the English Premiership with Leeds United, where he scored 59 goals in 130 League games before being signed by Middlesbrough in July 2004.
In three seasons with Boro Viduka scored 26 goals in 72 League games. |

Newcastle Complete Viduka Signing
Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce has this afternoon clinched the first signing of his reign at St James' Park by getting Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka to put pen to paper.
The 31-year-old Australian international has signed a two-year deal with the option of a third after passing a medical in London earlier today.
Allardyce journeyed south from Tyneside to meet Viduka, who was out-of-contract with Boro, and who flew in from a family holiday in order to complete the transfer before joining up with the Australian squad for their imminent Asia Cup campaign.
Viduka scored 19 goals for Middlesbrough last season, and had been offered a new deal by Boro.
Portsmouth, West Ham United and Birmingham City were also interested in signing the highly-rated striker, whose move to north-east rivals Newcastle will dismay many Boro fans who had hoped he would sign a new deal to stay on at The Riverside.
His departure will also pose problems for Boro boss Gareth Southgate, who is likely to see Viduka's strike partner of last season, Ayegbeni Yakubu, leave the club too. Southgate has been linked with Arsenal's Jeremie Aliadiere as a possible replacement for one of them.
Meanwhile Allardyce is poised to complete the signing of midfielder Joey Barton from Manchester City. The deal is being held up as the parties wait for some paper-work to come through, but no hitch is expected.
Barton will be a replacement for Scott Parker, the Newcastle midfielder and captain who has completed a transfer back to London with West Ham United, where he will be reunited with Alan Curbishley, his former manager at Charlton Athletic. |
