Chelsea boss Avram Grant has admitted his great admiration for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. Gerrard came close to joining Chelsea two years ago and Grant said: "He is a great player and a great person.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich faces a players' revolt if he persists with manager Avram Grant next season, it has been revealed.

The Mail on Sunday says a Chelsea win over Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final, the first leg of which is at Anfield on Tuesday, followed by victory in the final in Abramovich's home city of Moscow would make Grant bulletproof in the eyes of the billionaire, whose priority is European glory.

If that happens and Abramovich retains Grant in his current role, key players such as Real Madrid target Michael Essien are likely to join Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard on the list of those heading for the exit this summer, while the discontent among those who stay will deepen.

Some agents have suggested that their clients will seek a move if Grant, and his similarly unpopular assistant Henk ten Cate, stay in charge.

A well-placed source said: "The players are just not having Grant, and the same goes for some of the staff."

Michael Ballack is also believed to be considering his position and although Tal Ben Haim is the only Chelsea player so far to go public with his displeasure at working under Grant, many in the squad are still unconvinced of the Israeli's manager's abilities.

Avram Grant received a timely boost yesterday, before Chelsea抯Champions League semi-final, first leg against Liverpool, when FrankLampard returned to training after compassionate leave because of hismother抯 illness. Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba were also able totake some part after a week off because of hamstring and knee injuriesrespectively and will travel to the North West this afternoon. However,they may be considered doubtful because they have yet to train with thefirst-team squad.

Lampard抯 position will be assessed closer tokick-off tomorrow based on his state of mind and the health of hismother, but Grant, the first-team coach, is desperate for him to play.The final decision may be left with Lampard. The England midfieldplayer抯 return to training for the first time since his suddendeparture before last Monday抯 match against Wigan Athletic is apositive sign and he has indicated a willingness to travel, but, whilehis mother remains in intensive care, nothing can be taken for granted.

Ballackis more confident of being passed fit after missing Thursday抯 win awayto Everton with a hamstring problem, but the case of Drogba is lessconvincing because he is still experiencing pain in his knee.
