1947: The big day: Princess Elizabeth and Lt Philip Mountbatten photographed at Buckingham Palace after their wedding ceremony, held at Westminster Abbey on 20 November. Elizabeth's dress was the work of Norman Hartnell, Court Designer since 1938. The lavish gown boasted a 13ft long train that was said to have been inspired by a Boticelli painting

1948: In May of the first year of their marriage, the newlyweds pay a visit to to France, where as guests of the President of France they attend the Paris Opera. It is a little known fact that the Queen speaks fluent French and has no need for an interpreter when she visits French-speaking countries

Locals still talk about the time Elizabeth stayed on their island - referring to it as one of the only moments in her life she was able to live a 'normal' life

1951: Princess Elizabeth, as she was then, and Prince Philip show their fun-loving side as they take part in a square dance at a Government House party in Ottawa during a state visit to Canada

1952: Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip with Princess Anne and Prince Charles are immortalised in wax for the first time as a family as their statues are unveiled at Madame Tussauds, London

The Royals always leave Windsor Castle at 1.35pm in a convoy of cars, then transfer to horse-drawn Royal Landau carriages once they reach the Ascot gate of Windsor Great park, where they begin the procession to the Royal Box.
