Industry shows solidarity towards My Name Is Khan release; SRK tweets from Berlin
MUMBAI: With the hullabaloo caused by the Shiv Sena in Mumbai on the eve of My Name Is Khan’s release, the film industry has come together and has shown its solidarity towards the makers.
While some multiplexes may have stopped advance booking in an act of panic to save their properties from damage, the mood in the film industry is – "The Show Must Go On."
The entire force of 45,000 Bollywood film union workers will stand by Shah Rukh Khan and will be watching the movie over weekend in Mumbai theaters. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees is supporting the entire cast and crew of the film. The workers have pledged to stand with SRK in this moment of crisis.
The movie, which is directed by Karan Johar, will see Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol reuniting on the big screen after eight years. The movie will be distributed by Fox Star Studios India.
In his latest Twitter update, Shah Rukh Khan, who left for Berlin from Abu Dhabi last night after the premiere of the movie, writes, "In Berlin. From the grand hotel & premier in Abu Dhabi. Sand to snow. The journey has begun... for Khan. Hope it ends well & peacefully. I have never hurt anybody's sentiments… religious, nationalist or personal wittingly. I am pro relationships but not at cost of my nation. (It's) ironic & sad. A film made for world peace has led to so much angst in my own house... my city... my country. Let not anyone be hurt is all I pray

Bollywood Stars Speak Up For Shah Rukh Khan
Date Submitted: Thu Feb 11, 2010
Prominent Bollywood actors Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Kajol and Bipasha Basu came out openly in support of Shah Rukh Khan, who has come under attack by Indian right-wing party Shiv Sena for backing the inclusion of Pakistani cricketers in the upcoming Indian Premier League.
Abhishek, the first from the Bachchan family to have broken the silence over the issue, wrote on Twitter, “All that has been happening over the past few days is very unfortunate and sad! I believe that sports, arts and culture should be above politics.”
“My family and I have faced many such incidents in the past. And all I wish for is peace and harmony to prevail over all citizens,” he added.
Salman Khan, who is said to be not on cordial terms with SRK, too defended him, saying he has not said anything which is wrong.
“What should he apologize for? ‘My Name is Khan’ should be released for sure. It has to. As an industry we pay huge entertainment tax to the government and we entertain the people also. We don’t think like politicians. I anyway don’t understand this whole thing of taking a morcha and going to somebody’s house,” he said.
Kajol, who was travelling London and the U.S. now with SRK for the promotion of their new film, assured her fans that the film will be released as scheduled on February 12, notwithstanding the threat from the Sena which has warned cinema owners against its screening.
“Mumbaikers, don’t worry people, even Chengez Khan can’t stop MNIK release, relax and let all your positive energy flow here,” she wrote on Twitter.
“Because of some dirty politics, India is trailing behind the world, let us be together and show them the power of democracy,” she added.
Describing SRK as an iconic figure, Bipasha Basu said, “If you ask me as an individual there is nothing wrong that he has done. We are all there and Khan has the love and support of zillions of people. I am sure these tough times will pass.”
Asserting that nobody has the right to block the film’s release, Farhan Akhtar said, “There is no need for anyone to be afraid in the face of this sort of hooliganism! There are laws and we have faith in them protecting us.”
In a stinging attack on political parties, Shabana Azmi said they were only concerned about their interests.
“I don’t think anything is said that genuinely offends the political parties. They are concerned about their sagging political career, so this becomes a very easy peg to hang their sagging career, because they get into the news,” Azmi told a national television channel.
“Shah Rukh is the most secular and the most fair guy I know! Its unfair to judge his movie based on his opinions! I do love Karan Johar and Shah Rukh! Both are very dear to me and I will defend them if someone writes nonsense about them,” Preity Zinta tweeted.
“Mr P Chidambaram was displeased too for not including Pak players in IPL. No outcry about it. May b he is D Home Minister. U need guts to go 4him (sic),” Anupam Kher wrote on his twitter page.
“My name is KHER.My name is KHAN.My name is SINGH.My name is D’SOUZA.WOW.My name is INDIAN. (sic),” Kher’s second tweet said.
Music composer Vishal Dadlani of the Vishal & Shekhar duo has lauded the actor’s uncompromising stance and has tweeted on his page, “I’m so proud just to be part of the same industry as you.”
Mahesh Bhatt, who has frequently tweeted about the whole controversy said, “Insiders say Fox is standing firmly behind SRK. They r asking him not to prostrate before the Sena & beg for forgiveness.”
Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha has also written on Twitter asking Bollywood to break its silence on the issue.
Actors Ranvir Shorey and Konkona Sensharma have joined a group named ‘My Name Is Mumbai’ on Twitter.
“I am an Indian residing in Mumbai. My name is Ranvir,” wrote Shorey. Konkona wrote a similar “I am an Indian residing in Mumbai. My name is Konkona.” “My name is Kellie. I am Australian. I treasure my human right to express my opinion, and support @iamsrk’s right to the same,” wrote one follower of the group.
‘Dostana’ director Tarun Mansukhani asked the industry to stand together on the issue

My Name Is Khan Opens To Bumper Response
Friday 12th February 2010 13.00 IST
| Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network
My Name Is Khan has opened to a bumper response in India. Multiplexes across the country are recording phenomenal collections with major multiplexes being 100% for the first two shows. Wave Ludhiana, Fun Chandigarh, Wave Noida, Inox Kolkata, PVR Bangalore and Fun Bangalore amongst others have seen full houses in the morning for the first two shows.
Mumbai which is having a limited release is also extraordinary. Fun had their first show in the city at 12.00 and recorded 100% collections. The business at single screens is lower than multiplexes but still very good. Delhi and Kolkata single screens are super strong. Despite the problems in Mumbai the film will record very high collections on day one.

Hero Begins His Quest, and Then the Trouble Starts
The message of “My Name Is Khan,” an effective exercise in Bollywood high emotionalism, is less political than movie-ish: there are two kinds of people in the world, good and bad, a distinction more important than any other differences, like those between Hindus and Muslims.More About This Movie * Overview * Tickets & Showtimes * New York Times Review * Cast, Credits & Awards * Readers' Reviews * Trailers & ClipsSkip to next paragraphSkip to next paragraphRelatedSecurity and Eager Crowds Greet Bollywood Film (February 13, 2010)Mumbai Journal: Bollywood and Politics Collide in a Red-Carpet Standoff (February 12, 2010)BlogsThe CarpetbaggerTheCarpetbaggerYour guide to the news and the nonsense of awards season. Join the discussion.Go to Awards SeasonAll is not well when the film begins, with the Muslim hero, Rizvan Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), roughly searched at the San Francisco airport. (His mantra, “My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist,” spooks the guards.) But, like most Hindi movies, it ends well, with the election of a black American president, presented as a moment of hope and triumphal healing. The world may be an ugly place, but in the words of a song heard throughout the movie, “We Shall Overcome.”At its best “My Name Is Khan,” set mainly in America, is an affecting fairy tale about the perils of goodness. Rizvan, a kind of holy fool played mostly with restraint by Mr. Khan, has Asperger’s syndrome. His condition makes him a single-minded worker on the side of the angels, but it also gets him and his family into trouble: he cannot tell a lie, or keep his faith hidden. After 9/11 that’s dangerous for a man named Khan. The film is propelled by a love story and a quest. Rizvan falls for and weds a divorced single mother, Mandira (Kajol Devgan, a frequent co-star of Mr. Khan), a Hindu who accepts his oddities even if by marrying him she seems to be taking on another child. (Then again the true Bollywood romance is the one between mothers and sons.) Rizvan, a kind of genius, may have trouble expressing emotions, but he has them, and with a copy of “Intercourse for Dumbos” gets through the wedding night. After her son becomes a victim of an anti-Muslim attack, Mandira throws Rizvan out, and he takes her command literally: go tell the president that your name is Khan and you’re not a terrorist. He wanders in the desert and somehow lands in Georgia, providing the movie with its most improbable detour. A small black community takes him in and, later, when a Katrina-like flood hits the town, Rizvan proves that not only is he not a terrorist, but he is also the only man in America willing to help those in need.“Khan” is one of a handful of Hindi films (“New York,” “Kurbaan”) about Indians living in a paranoid, post-9/11 America, and there’s something fascinating about looking at this country through a Bollywood lens, even when the story is a kind of fairy tale. (Most interesting here is the link made between black Americans and Indians, especially Muslims.) Skillfully directed by Karan Johar and with an evocative score by Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy, “Khan” jerks tears with ease, while teaching lessons about Islam and tolerance.Ah, tolerance. In India, a firestorm surrounded the film’s release on Friday. The Shiv Sena, a fundamentalist Hindu party, is angry with Mr. Khan, a Muslim, who is probably the biggest star in Bollywood. Why? Because Mr. Khan won’t apologize for remarks he made about Pakistani cricketers being allowed to play in India. (He is part owner of a team.) But the Shiv Sena’s threats and promises to disrupt the movie’s Mumbai opening didn’t stop crowds from going to see the film. Chalk one up for Bollywood. |

Critical reception
Several top critics generally liked the film. Nikhat Kazmi of the Times of India gave it five stars, describing My Name Is Khan as, "indubitably one of the most meaningful and moving films to be rolled out from the Bollywood mills in recent times. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave My Name Is Khan four and a half out of five stars and argues: "When a film stars two of the finest talents of the country, you expect nothing but the best. SRK, well, how does one describe his performance? To state that this ishis best work so far would be cutting short the praise he truly deserves. In fact, no amount of praise can do sufficient justice to his portrayal of Rizvan Khan, who has Asperger's syndrome. His latest work is several notches above anything he has done before. The only compliment that I can think of is, SRK has a new screen-name now. Rajis passe, Rizvan it is. Kajol is pure dynamite and casting her for this character was the most appropriate decision. No other actress could've matched SRK in histrionics the way Kajol has. In fact, SRK and Kajol complement each other wonderfully well and this film only proves it yet again. It's a powerhouse performance from this supremely talented actress. Rachel Saltz of The New York Times states: "Khan is one of a handful of Hindi films (New York, Kurbaan)about Indians living in a paranoid, post-9/11 America, and there’s something fascinating about looking at this country through a Bollywoodlens, even when the story is a kind of fairy tale. (Most interesting here is the link made between black Americans and Indians, especially Muslims.) Skillfully directed by Karan Johar and with an evocative score by Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy, Khan jerks tears with ease, while teaching lessons about Islam and tolerance. Kirk Honeycutt of the Hollywood Reporter argues that, "This is a movie not built for subtlety, but it does tackle a subject American movies have mostly avoided -- that of racial profiling and the plight of Muslim-Americans. It also allows Shah Rukh Khan to display his talent to an even wider audience. It's well worththe 162-minute journey.Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave My Name Is Khan three and a half out of five stars, arguing that "the film shamelessly tugs at your heartstrings and on more than one occasion wallops you to weep. Aided by solid camerawork, tight editing and a layered story,Johar crafts an engaging, stirring saga that is earnest and noble. With this message movie in the mainstream format, the director takes a step in the right direction. |
