Little lessons from tiny S'pore
By Salman Hussin

FOR the first time, I had the opportunity to take a closer look at the neighbouring country across the Johor Causeway - Singapore. Although I had made several visits to some destinations in Singapore, this visit on Feb 26 was different as it was led by PAS Youth Information Chief Mazlan Aliman, and we toured the country.

Our delegation included Johor PAS information chief Ghazaly Ayub and Johor PAS Youth secretary Khairul Faizi Ahmad Kamil. We took 12 hours to tour the Lion City, starting from the Customs and Immigration Complex at Woodlands to Changi International Airport and the Singapore commercial centre in Orchard Road.

We also visited other interesting sites such as the Port of Singapore, Sentosa Island, Mount Faber Park, the Temenggung Daeng Ibrahim Mosque in Telok Blangah and the city.

There is much that can be said about Singapore's rapid development, economic vibrancy and its well-planned and attractive environment and system during the one-day visit - facts that clearly show its leaders' determination to build and develop this small nation.

Though much can be said about this small nation of three million people, I choose to highlight the minor but significant issues. There is no need to highlight the major issues on Singapore. When we ourselves cannot accomplish the minor things, what more the major and futuristic things accomplished by Singapore leaders.

Upon visiting the Customs and Immigration Complex and during the journey back to Johor, along the same road, we were impressed by the good and well-planned road system.

Throughout our journey - from 10am to 11.45pm - we did not encounter any pothole, not even one damaged road. This greatly surprised us as the situation is very much different in Malaysia.

In Malaysia, especially in Johor Baru, there are many damaged and potholed roads. In the other districts, the situation is worse. Perhaps with the slogan 'Excellence, Glory and Distinction' and the implementation of Islam Hadhari, this situation will change. Upon driving through the Malaysian Customs and Immigration Complex, we could feel the difference as we headed home, which was not surprising as we had just driven along much better roads.

Besides the better roads, we did not have to worry about reversing our cars when parking in Singapore because of concrete kerbs erected at standard heights for all vehicles, except modified ones. If Singapore can attend to such minute details so systematically, what more matters involving its economy, education, defence, politics and other national interests.

Talking about roads, I did not see yellow lines throughout the journey in the Republic. The yellow lines are usually seen near schools, hospitals and traffic junctions to warn motorists to slow down. Having too many yellow lines is impractical because it will disrupt traffic flow.

Logically, drivers who are sober and sane will automatically slow down when they see schoolchildren crossing or when they drive on busy roads or at junctions, so why the need for yellow lines? Probably because of the impact and risks on motorists, the Singapore Government did not emulate the Malaysian way of disciplining motorists.

Instead, the Singapore method makes road users feel safe and peaceful when driving. What we found surprising throughout our journey was that we did not see a single policeman. On the way back to Malaysia, there was a traffic accident. Only then did we see a police patrol car with policemen controlling traffic.

Another thing that caught our attention was the protest of the Singapore Muslims through the Islamic Religious Council Singapore (Muis) against the proposal to build a casino. The issue continues to be hotly debated and the government is gathering feedback from the people. When the Singapore Muslims protested against the publication of lottery results in the Malay press, their protest was accepted. Now, lottery results are no longer published in the Malay press in the Republic.

A Singapore friend insinuated: 'Our country is ruled by non-Muslims, is not an Islamic state and does not have Islam Hadhari, but lottery results are not published in the Malay press. What about in Malaysia?' We felt the sting of this insinuation but that is the reality in our country today.

Another interesting feature about Singapore, which was once part of Malaysia, is its HDB flats and condominiums. Singapore maintains a clean and green environment. Shady trees are found everywhere, in every housing estate. Clearly, it is not so greedy to implement development as to sacrifice its environment. To meet its land requirement for the next 10 to 20 years due to a projected increase in the population, Singapore has initiated land reclamation from the sea.

This, briefly, was our new experience, our close observation of a small nation lacking in natural resources but, with the wisdom and determination of its leaders who are genuinely people-oriented, it has succeeded in making Singapore one of the most developed countries in the world.

This write-up is not meant to belittle the capabilities of Malaysian leaders; we are fully confident that Malaysian leaders can also do the best for the people and the country. Therefore, there is nothing wrong in emulating another country. Unfortunately, the case now is that we like to copy only the negative.

This article appeared in the March 6 issue of Harakah, a weekly newspaper published by PAS, the opposition Islamic Party of Malaysia.

Sly to marry Maia?

ARE they really getting married, was it an impulse decision, or could this just be a publicity stunt?

A check with the Registry of Marriages website shows that Maia Lee and Sylvester Sim registered their marriage last Wednesday. -- MEDIACORP

A check with the Registry of Marriages website shows that Singapore Idol runner-up Sylvester Sim and finalist Maia Lee, both 22, are tying the knot.

The couple registered their marriage last Wednesday as Sim Siang Long Sylvester and Lee Zhi Ying.

These names tallied with those in documents given to Life! by MediaCorp during the Singapore Idol competition last year containing information on the 12 finalists.

A clerk, known only as Miss Wu, called Shin Min Daily News on Wednesday to say that she had spotted the couple a week ago while queueing up with her boyfriend to lodge an electronic marriage application.

A spokesman for Artiste Networks, Sim's management company, told the Life! yesterday that the singer was uncontactable as he was in Taiwan recording his debut album.

A reliable source told Life! that Lee, who is a single mother of a three-year old son, is also in Taiwan at the moment.

In a statement to Life! through Artiste Networks on Thursday, Sim said his marriage application was 'an act of impulse' that he made 'at a moment of impulse'.

He said: 'I realised soon after that I made an extremely rash decision. My only consolation is that I have not signed the official documents.'

HIJRAH MASIH BELUM PULANGKAN CENGKERAM

Kami hanya mendapat surat pengesahan mengenai pengunduran anak kami, namun tiada pemberitahuan tentang wang cengkeram.
