Toure ready to work with Gallas in Arsenal defence
Kolo Toure maintains he and William Gallas have shown they can work together at the heart of the Arsenal defence to help steer the Gunners’ campaign through to a successful conclusion.
Arsenal kept their seventh clean sheet from the last nine games as Robin van Persie’s penalty gave them a slender 1-0 advantage over Roma to take back to Italy for the second leg of the Champions League last 16 clash.
"William and I, we used to play together and last season I think we only lost three or four games together. I think we know each other really well and we are quite happy to play together," Toure said.
"Everything is at the end now. It has finished and in the past. I am delighted to be at the club, playing every week and helping the team to win games.
Toure, last of Wenger’s Invincibles still with the team, declared: "I love Arsenal - I have been at the club for seven years now and it is the club of my heart and I am quite happy at the moment."
The defender picked up what could yet prove to be a significant caution during Tuesday night’s match as the second half started in farcical fashion when Roma kicked off with only nine Arsenal players on the field.
Gallas and Toure eventually dashed from out of the tunnel, with the Ivory Coast international running straight onto the pitch - and was promptly shown a yellow card by Danish referee Claus Bo Larsen for entering the field of play without permission.
It was all down to a superstition of Toure’s to be the last player out.
"I did not know the rule and the good thing is that I have learned a new rule for coming on," said Toure, who would be suspended for a potential quarter-final if he were to be cautioned again in Rome.

France expand arsenal with William Gallas's cousin Mathieu Bastareaud
France, as unpredictable as ever, have called up the cousin of former Arsenal captain William Gallas for Friday night's match against Grand Slam champions Wales.
They have also picked an out-of-form centre, Benoit Baby, at fly-half, proving that life under coach Marc Lievremont is rarely boring.
Mathieu Bastareaud's appearance at centre has its origins in Lievremont's risky decision to replace injured fly-half Lionel Beauxis with Baby, who has looked a long way from his best at centre for France. Having made that call, however, Bastareaud's performances for a misfiring Stade Francais this season fully justify his elevation. He is a major player in the making.
"We regret the withdrawal of Lionel Beauxis," Lievremont said. "Events therefore dictate our choice. We think that Baby has all the qualities to play in that position even if he rarely plays there for his club.
"At centre we had to choose between Mathieu Bastareaud and Damien Traille, but Traille is a little ill and only played an hour for his club at the weekend, while Florian Fritz is still suspended. We are conscious he [Bastareaud] has only come into the squad four days before the match but he brings determination and power."
A young bull of a man, Bastareaud caused all sorts of problems for Harlequins in the Heineken Cup this season and was prevented from making his debut against New Zealand as long ago as 2007 only by injury.
Still technically a member of the Stade academy Bastareaud, 20, was overdue with homework and when an unrecognised number flashed on his mobile after club training on Monday he delayed answering, as you do.
"I hadn't finished the work and avoided the phone call," admitted Bastareaud, whose family are from Guadeloupe. "As it turned out it was Christophe Dominici [the Stade backs coach] who was ringing to warn me that I had been called up. I was really surprised."
Bastareaud's introduction could certainly change France's game plan. No great distributor or kicker at this early stage of his career, his strength is his raw power and when in possession it will be route one rugby.
Lievremont has made changes elsewhere, with the classy Maxime Medard reverting to full-back in place of Clement Poitreneaud and Bourgoin's Morgan Parra coming in at scrum-half for Sebastien Tillous-Bordes. Sebastien Chabal will start in the second row and the experienced Sylvain Marconnet returns at prop.
France: M Medard (Toulouse); J Malzieu (Clermont-Auvergne), M Bastareaud (Stade Francais), Y Jauzion, C Heymans (both Toulouse); B Baby (Clermont), M Parra (Bourgoin); F Barcella (Biarritz), D Szarzewski, S Marconnet (Stade Francais), L Nallet (Castres, capt), S Chabal (Sale), T Dusautoir (Toulouse), F Ouedraogo (Montpellier), I Harinordoquy (Biarritz).
Substitutes: B Kayser (Leicester), T Domingo (Clermont), R Millo-Chluski (Toulouse), L Picamoles (Montpellier); S Tillous-Bordes (Castres), F Trinh-Duc (Montpellier), C Poitrenaud (Toulouse). |
