'Commonwealth Games should never have gone to Delhi'

The Commonwealth Games should never have been awarded to India, Australia's Olympic chief said today as more top athletes pulled out of the event plagued by concerns over accommodation, construction and security.

As athletes begin arriving in Delhi, authorities are still working on completing Games venues, forcing some teams to take up temporary accommodation at hotels.

"I don't think it is a cultural thing. When you agree to host [a Games] you are required to provide the basics in terms of health and hygiene for the athletes," the Australian Olympic Committee president, John Coates, said. "The Games shouldn't have been awarded to Delhi in hindsight."

The cyclist Greg Henderson became the first New Zealand athlete to withdraw over concerns about health and security. A dengue fever epidemic has hit Delhi and two foreign visitors were shot and wounded by suspected militants in the city on Sunday.

The Olympic gold medallist Geraint Thomas and three other Welsh cyclists also opted out of the Games, due to start on 3 October.

"It's about my family, it's not just about Greg Henderson any more, I've got to think about my wife [the former Australian cyclist Katie Mactier] and little girl Charlie and they don't want me going to the Commonwealth Games," said the 33-year-old Henderson, who rides for Britain's Team Sky and had been selected for the road race team. "There are just too many risks and in this situation the cons outweigh the pros."

Photographs of the state of the athletes' village, which had prompted the New Zealand Olympic Committee to tell their athletes to delay their arrivals in Delhi, had also helped his decision, he said.

"I have seen those [photos], and heard a few stories. It was a combination of those photos and sitting down with Katie that really made my final decision," he added. Henderson won gold in the points race at the Manchester Games in 2002, as well as a bronze in the 4,000 metres team pursuit. He also won bronze medals in the points race and team pursuit at Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

Cycling: Geraint Thomas pulls out of Delhi games

Sep 24 2010 by Andy Howell, South Wales Echo
Recommend

GERAINT Thomas has become the first high-profile star to withdraw from Wales’ Commonwealth Games team.

The Olympic cycling champion, who would have been favourite to strike gold in the men’s individual pursuit in Delhi next month, took the decision as the Games appeared to pull back from the brink of collapse.

Confirmation that Wales and Scotland would be competing didn’t stop the 24-year-old Tour de France revelation and multi-world track champion from pulling out following widespread furore about accommodation conditions and hygiene in India.

Thomas confirmed he had made his decision on health grounds after speaking to Welsh team manager Gareth Sheppard.

He cited concerns about contracting the mosquito-borne illness Dengue Fever after footage of dirty apartments in the athletes’ village was aired around the world.

“I was going to be out there for quite a long time doing the track and the road and there’s a high risk of getting ill,” said the 24-year-old Maindy Flyers and Cardiff Jif product.

“There will be a lot of stress on top of all the racing and I don’t think anyone can perform at their best in those conditions.”

British champion Thomas revealed he discussed the matter with Great Britain officials – his professional road team Sky last night issued a statement denying it had put pressure on its riders to withdraw.

Thomas said: “It was a really hard decision to make so I discussed it with staff on the GB team, but it was my decision.”

And he stressed: “I really want to ride the Commonwealth Games because I only get to ride for Wales once every four years.

“But, at the same time, there are bigger things to think about. I can’t wreck my winter and next year.”

Thomas’ Sky team-mate Peter Kennaugh, from the Isle of Man, has also withdrawn because of the health issues – but Welsh athletes will start heading to Delhi this weekend.

Commonwealth Games 2010: England diver Peter Waterfield pulls out of New Delhi

The 29-year-old 10-metre platform specialist, who won Commonwealth gold in 2002 and silver in 2006 as well as a synchronising diving silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, said he had decided to withdraw from the Games out of duty to his family.

“I have attended two Commonwealth Games and three Olympic Games in the past so I always knew that the living conditions would be basic, but I do not want to put myself at risk in Delhi,” he said.

“I have a wife and two young children who were very concerned about me attending the event and this decision is one that we have made as a family. I hope that people will understand and respect this.”

He was the second England athlete to pull out yesterday after cyclist Russell Downing announced that he would not be travelling to India. On Thursday, four of Downing’s Team Sky colleagues - Welshman Geraint Thomas, Manx rider Peter Kennaugh and Englishmen Ben Swift and Ian Stannard - also pulled out over health fears.

Dengue fever remains a serious problem for athletes due to the large amount of standing water left in the athletes’ village following weeks of monsoon rain. Many of the basements of the residential tower blocks are flooded with stagnant water, providing ideal breeding areas for mosquitoes.

Hayman's big re-think on Games
JON TUXWORTH
25 Sep, 2010 12:00 AM
Canberra cyclist Matt Hayman is seriously contemplating withdrawing from the Commonwealth Games as the event lurches from one crisis to the next.

Hayman yesterday admitted he has reservations about competing in India as negative reports regarding security and living conditions continue to filter through from Delhi.

The 32-year-old won the road race in Melbourne four years ago, but even the prospect of back-to-back gold medals will not take precedence over his personal safety.

Hayman, who returned from a stint in Europe yesterday, was greeted by the news that a handful of his Team Sky colleagues have already decided to withdraw from the Games.

Hayman will delay a decision on whether he follows suit after competing in next week's UCI Road World Championships in Geelong.

''It's concerning, and I'm trying to scour all media reports and keep abreast of the situation,'' Hayman said.

''At this stage I haven't withdrawn, but I've got some concerns about going.

''First up is the world championships and a lot can happen in a week.

''Last week after the shooting [when two Taiwanese tourists were shot in Delhi] ... I've got a lovely wife, and family and friends have expressed concerns about me going.''

Hayman also highlighted the dengue fever risks following a major mosquito outbreak in the Indian capital as a major issue.

''It is up to each individual,'' Hayman said.

''It's a tough call, and obviously India has a lot to lose if the Games don't go ahead, if a lot of athletes pull out.

''First and foremost I'm looking forward to the world championships, and I'm under no pressure to make a decision right now.''
