AKB48’s album sells 602,000 copies in first week, topping Morning Musume’s 11 year record
AKB48’s first original album “Koko ni Ita Koto” sold 602,000 copies in its first week, placing at #1 on the 6/20 Oricon Weekly Album Ranking. Moreover, this means AKB48 now has the highest selling original album in the first week by a female group, which was originally held by Morning Musume’s “3rd-LOVE Paradise” (578,000 in its first week) for 11 years and two months. AKB48 has also topped EXILE’s “Negai no Tou” (481,000 in its first week) for most sold album this year.
Since their debut in 2006, AKB48 has released two best albums “Kamikyokutachi” (first week 295,000/total 521,000) and “SET LIST ~Greatest Songs~ Kanzenban” (First week 68,000/total 152,000), but this is their first original album. This album didn’t include a special event ticket and it has already sold more in one week than what “Kamikyokutachi” sold in 62 weeks; it’s their personal best. This album is their second album after “Kamikyokutachi” to reach #1 on Oricon.
Furthermore, AKB48’s single “Everyday, Kachuusha” is rank #3 this week in Oricon’s Weekly Single Ranking, making it 3 consecutive weeks in the top 3. As of this week, the group has sold 1,499,000 copies, surely they’ll sell more than 1,500,000 copies by next week.

AKB48′s “Everyday, Kachusha” reaches 1.5 million at record pace
AKB48’s latest single, “Everyday, Kachusha,” officially reached 1.5 million in sales this past week. Released on May 25, the single set a record for highest first-week sales at 1.334 million copies. Now in its fourth week in stores, the single has sold a total of approximately 1.517 million copies.
The last single to break the 1.5 million mark was the 2005 hit “Seishun Amigo,” sung by Kamenashi Kazuya (KAT-TUN) and Yamashita Tomohisa (NEWS) as the unit Shuji to Akira. Among female artists, the last one was MISIA’s “Everything” in 2000.
Counting only female groups, AKB48 is just the 5th in history to achieve 1.5 million copies sold for a single, following in the footsteps of:
Pink Lady – UFO – 1.554 million
Puffy – Kore ga Watashi no Ikiru Michi – 1.566 million
SPEED – WHITE LOVE – 1.845 million
Morning Musume – LOVE Machine – 1.647 million
However, AKB48 is the fastest female group to reach 1.5 million (4 weeks), breaking the previous record of 12 weeks set by SPEED.

Acchan sells 177k, Koko ni Ita Koto tops the yearly album chart
AKB's ace Maeda Atsuko's Debut Single sold a total of 177,000 copies in its first week, being the first female artist to debut topping the single charts since Kaoru Amane's "Taiyou no Uta" in 2006. In other related news, AKB's first original album "Koko ni Ita Koto" total sales reached 716k as of this week, surpassing the previous 1# in the yearly rankings so far this year (EXILE's "Negai no Tou", 707k) making AKB hold both top positions in the yearly album and yearly single charts this year.

AKB48 to hold another Janken tournament for 24th single
Today, AKB48 announced during their handshake event for “Everyday, Kachuusha” that they will once again hold a “Senbatsu Janken Taikai” this year, on September 20 at the Nippon Budokan. Similar to the first one that they held in 2010, the rock-paper-scissors tournament will determine the participating members in the group’s 24th single, scheduled for release in December of this year.
Last year, the 47 members (at the time) of AKB48 and 4 of the research students participated in the contest, and the final 16 members earned the right to be on the group’s 19th single. Team K’s Uchida Mayumi, who was relatively unknown compared to AKB48′s top members, ended up in 1st place and served as the single’s central member.
This year, all of the current members of AKB48 (including the 10 members of the newly formed Team 4) will be entered into the tournament, plus 3 research students and 5 members from each of SKE48 and NMB48. Preliminary tournaments will be held in the near future to determine the members from SKE48, NMB48, and the research students. A total of 71 girls will compete in the main tournament.
AKB48′s 22nd single “Flying Get,” whose members were decided by the recent general Senbatsu election, is scheduled for release on August 24. Their 23rd single is set for October.
Update: Further news reports confirm that Team 4 is included as part of the “official” members of AKB48.

AKB48's Team 4 appoints captain, adds two members
Posted on July 23, 2011 by tokyograph
AKB48 announced some changes to Team 4 on Saturday. Member Oba Mina has been appointed as the team’s captain, and two research students have been added as official members: Abe Maria and Iriyama Anna.
Team 4 was created in June as AKB48's fourth team, with only 10 initial members. With the addition of Abe and Iriyama, the team now has 12 spots filled, leaving only 4 more available spaces.
Although they are now official members of Team 4, that does not make Abe and Iriyama automatically eligible for the upcoming AKB48 janken tournament, since their promotions had not been decided at the time of the preliminary rounds. However, Iriyama already earned a spot in the tournament as a research student during the preliminaries.

AKB48's Nakaya, Tanabe to release single as “BABY GAMBA”
Posted on August 1, 2011 by tokyograph
AKB48 members Nakaya Sayaka (Team A) and Tanabe Miku (Team K) have formed a temporary unit called BABY GAMBA, and on September 14 they will release a DVD single titled “Ee janai ka.”
The unit is connected to Saito Atsuo’s children’s book “Boukenshatachi Gamba to Jugohiki no Nakama,” originally published in 1972 and adapted as the anime series “Gamba no Bouken” in 1975. The story told the adventures of a rat named Gamba and his 15 friends.
For the music video of “Ee janai ka,” Nakaya and Tanabe are costumed in rat ears and tails, and they appear in other costumes as well. A computer-generated version of Gamba appears along with them in the video.
A preview of the song has been posted on Avex’s YouTube channel, and an official website has opened for the project. There are also plans for Nakaya and Tanabe to appear as BABY GAMBA at events on September 17-19 in the Tohoku region.
