AKB48′s “Flying Get” breaks 1 million on first day
According to Oricon’s daily sales charts, AKB48’s 22nd single “Flying Get” has sold more than 1 million copies in its first day. The single, which officially went on sale on August 24, sold a total of 1,025,952 copies to take #1 on the daily rankings. In comparison, V6’s new single “Sexy. Honey. Bunny! / Takara no Ishi” sold 28,943 copies in the same time period to rank #2.
In May, AKB48′s previous single “Everyday, Kachusha” sold 942,475 on its first day, and it went on to set a new all-time record of 1,333,969 copies for first week sales. By breaking the million mark on the first day, “Flying Get” is poised to surpass “Everyday, Kachusha” and again set a new weekly record.
“Flying Get” is now the group’s fourth single to reach 1 million, after “Everyday, Kachusha,” “Sakura no Ki ni Narou,” and “Beginner.”
The senbatsu members for “Flying Get” were chosen in AKB48′s most recent general election. The title track is currently used as the theme song for the drama series “Hanazakari no Kimitachi e ~Ikemen Paradise~ 2011,” which stars popular member Maeda Atsuko. The song also has tie-ins with multiple commercials and has been promoted heavily in the past few weeks.

AKB48 sets new sales record with “Flying Get”
After selling over 1 million copies on the first day, AKB48’s latest single “Flying Get” has officially topped the weekly sales charts. According to Oricon, the single sold approximately 1,354,000 copies in its first week, breaking the all-time record that they previously set with “Everyday, Kachusha” in May (1,334,000).
They are now the first artist in the 44-year history of Oricon’s single charts to release two consecutive singles that sold 1 million copies in the first week.
Since their 14th single “RIVER” in 2009, AKB48 has a streak of 9 consecutive number-ones. Among female groups, this ties them with Pink Lady for the record. It also ties them with Pink Lady for the record of consecutive million-selling singles (three).
AKB48 now has the two best-selling singles (in first week sales) in Oricon history.
AKB48 – Flying Get – 1.354 million
AKB48 – Everyday, Kachusha – 1.334 million
Mr.Children – Namonaki Uta – 1.208 million
Utada Hikaru – Addicted To You – 1.068 million

Exile, 16 AKB48 members to 'perform' with Hibari Misora
ENTERTAINMENT AUG. 11, 2011 - 05:00AM JST ( 4 )
TOKYO —
A concert to raise funds for victims of the March 11 disaster, titled “Don’t Worry Japan! Songs of love and care from the sky,” will be held at Tokyo Dome on Nov 11. The concert will also commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the death of songstress Hibari Misora, an icon of the Showa era, who died at the age of 52.
The concert was announced by Hibari Productions President Kazuya Ito, who is Misora’s eldest son. Performers will include Izumi Yukimura, Hiromi Go and 16 AKB48 members. They will sing some of Misora’s greatest hits as well as their own songs. Misora will appear in video footage. It will be her first “performance” at Tokyo Dome since April 11, 1988, when she was fighting against cancer.
Ito told reporters that he hoped the concert would forever touch the hearts of disaster victims by connecting the music of three generations of artists who will go beyond genres and age gaps.

2nd Japan-Vietnam Friendship Music Festival to feature AAA, AKB48, EXILE, w-inds., Koda Kumi
Posted on August 10, 2011 by tokyograph
A press conference was held at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel on Wednesday to announce the 2nd Japan-Vietnam Friendship Music Festival, set to take place in Hanoi on October 9, 2011. The lineup will feature AAA, AKB48, EXILE, w-inds., Koda Kumi, Godai Natsuko, and Sugi Ryotaro.
The 1st Japan-Vietnam Friendship Music Festival was held three years ago in 2008. This time, the festival will be held at the historic Hanoi Opera House, which is celebrating its 100th birthday.
After the Tohoku earthquake in March, the Vietnamese government donated 200,000 dong (approximately 16 million yen), 50,000 underwear, and many other items. This festival is being held partly as a gesture of repayment for Vietnam’s generosity, and it is said that the artists will be participating without a guaranteed fee. There are also plans to set up a Japan-Vietnam Medical Treatment Exchange fund in conjunction with the festival.

AKB48's Oba Mina suspended, Mori Anna graduated
Posted on September 2, 2011 by tokyograph
AKB48’s Team 4 had its roster shaken up on Friday, with the announcement of Oba Mina’s suspension and Mori Anna’s graduation. The news came the same day as the announcement of NMB48 member Shimada Rena’s suspension.
Like Shimada’s case, both Oba and Mori were caught in “scandals” involving their personal blogs from the past. As a result, Oba has resigned from the position of Team 4 captain, and she has also requested a self-suspension from her entertainment activities for now. Oba has also decided to withdraw from the upcoming “senbatsu janken tournament” on September 20th.
Meanwhile, Mori is immediately graduating from the group, due to the combination of this scandal and her back pains that have been keeping her from fully participating in the group’s theater performances.
Both Oba and Mori joined AKB48 as 9th generation research students. This past June, they both were promoted to official member status as part of AKB48's newly established Team 4.

AKB48's Kitahara Rie to make movie debut in “Graffreeter Toki”
Posted on September 2, 2011 by tokyograph
AKB48 member Kitahara Rie (20) will make her big screen debut in a live-action movie inspired by the popular manga “Grappler Baki.” Titled “Graffreeter Toki,” the movie is related to a stage play of the same name that was performed by Gekidan FEELD STAGE in March.
Written by Itagaki Keisuke, “Grappler Baki” is a manga about a man named Baki aiming to become the most powerful grappler in the world. The comedic “Graffreeter Toki” story is set in a downtown shopping street, where a land speculator is colluding with an evil organization. Toki is a young boy whose mother, a passionate Baki fan, has raised him with some unusual talents. Together with the other people of the shopping district, Toki fights to protect the neighborhood from the evil organization.
The protagonist Toki will be played by relatively new actor Sudo Ryota, who also starred in the stage play. Kitahara will play the heroine of the story, while Saito Yuki will play Toki’s mother. Kobayashi Kendo will play the leader of the evil organization, and Tsuda Kanji has been cast as a key character.
“Graffreeter Toki” is set for release in spring 2012.

AKB48 offers chance to appear on cover of FLASH magazine with favorite member
Posted on September 2, 2011 by tokyograph
On September 20th, idol group AKB48 is holding its 2nd Senbatsu Janken tournament to decide the participants for the group’s 24th single, to be released this December. Like last year, the group will release an official guidebook, but this year’s book comes with a chance of a lifetime. Fans who predict the top 8 winners of the tournament, in order, will be able to appear on the cover of weekly magazine FLASH along with their favorite member.
The guidebook, which goes on sale on September 5th for a retail price of 1,000 yen, comes with an application sheet for fans to submit their predictions.
71 members are expected to participate in this year’s tournament, though replacements have not yet been announced for NMB48’s Shimada Rena and AKB48’s Oba Mina. With that many competitors and a huge amount of luck involved, the probability of correctly predicting the order of the top 8 is incredibly low (worse than 1 in 1 trillion). However, should it happen, the prize of appearing on a magazine cover with an idol group member would be unprecedented.
Fans who correctly predict the top 3 in order (a much better chance) will receive a special present. Out of those, 10 people will be chosen through lottery to receive invitations to an AKB48 concert after-party. Also, those who correctly predict the top 3 (not necessarily in order) will get to watch an AKB48 concert from VIP seats.

AKB48 becomes first female group to sell 1.5 million twice in a row
AKB48’s latest single, “Flying Get,” has reached 1.5 million copies sold, in its 4th week of release. This makes them the first female group ever to have two consecutive singles reach that number.
AKB48′s previous single, “Everyday, Kachusha” (released in May), sold 1.517 million copies in its first 4 weeks and is currently at 1.573 million copies sold. “Flying Get” has the slight edge at the 4-week mark, with a current total of 1.521 million copies sold.
AKB48 is just the 5th artist to achieve back-to-back singles that have reached 1.5 million in sales, after B'z, Mr.Children, KinKi Kids, and Utada Hikaru. Four female groups – Pink Lady, Puffy, SPEED, Morning Musume – have had a single reach 1.5 million copies, but none of them were able to do it twice in a row.

AKB48 perform at Shanghai Japan Week event
ENTERTAINMENT SEP. 25, 2011 - 06:34AM JST ( 2 )
TOKYO —
Sixteen members of Japanese idol group AKB48 performed AKB48 performed at a concert on Saturday afternoon as part of a three-day Shanghai Japan Week cultural exchange event that ends Sunday.
The event is being held to thank China for its aid after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
The AKB48 girls received a passionate welcome to Shanghai at the airport on Friday when an overexcited crowd rushed toward them, creating a safety hazard, Sankei Shimbun reported Saturday.
As the girls passed through the arrival terminal at Shanghai airport, hundreds of fans and dozens of paparazzi charged toward them, creating a panic.
A handful of fans had also discovered the name of the hotel in which the girls were staying. Local press reported that around 100 fans had gathered outside the hotel and repeatedly called the girls’ names, which in turn caused greater numbers to gather.
Such was the fervor of the crowds that when around 1,000 fans gathered at a planned meet and greet event on Friday night, organizers decided to cancel the engagement in the name of safety. “The girls’ appearances were causing security concerns,” said a spokesperson.
Saturday’s 90-minute concert was held without any incident.
AKB48 member Mayu Watanabe, 17, said, “It’s my first time here in Shanghai and I’m delighted at the welcome we’ve received.” Fellow member Minami Minegishi, 18, said, “AKB48’s strength is our live performance, so we really wanted to put on a great show for Shanghai.”
