Hema objects to Ramu's 'Sholay'

Hema Malini, the chirpy and talkative "Basanti" of Sippy's blockbuster 'Sholay' showed her resentment on remaking of 'Sholay'. The actress has been a leading film personality and made her presence felt recently with musical launch of 'Baabul'. She felt that masterpieces cannot be replicated and the impressive performances of actors in the original 'Sholay' were brilliant and are incomparable. She added that her daughter Esha Deol has never been approached to play her "Basanti"s role in Ramu's 'Sholay'. Earlier, Jaya Bachchan, who played "Radha" in 'Sholay', had also objected to the remake of 'Sholay' and stated that blockbusters should not be tampered with or duplicated. Hema expressed her strong disappointment over the fact that the new generation is inclining more towards western culture than showing interest in classical Indian music and dance. She believes that this phase will breathe last after the arrival of competent talents on the screen. Besides, she expressed big hopes for her forthcoming release 'Baabul'.

'Departed' opens Marrakech

By JOHN HOPEWELLMADRID -- Continuing his association with the Marrakech Intl. Film Festival, Martin Scorsese's U.S. hit "The Departed" will open the fest's sixth edition, which runs Dec. 1-9.
Marrakech closes with Patrice Leconte's "My Best Friend."

In 2005, Scorsese received a tribute at Marrakech, and co-hosted a Marrakech Festival Foundation/Tribeca young filmmakers workshop with Abbas Kiarostami.

Though Scorsese will not be attending the festival this year, Marrakech will screen a selection of 11 Italian films chosen by him under the title "A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese through Italian movies," as part of its around 50-film Italian Cinema retro. Fest also screens a Taj Mahal Indian Panorama.

Susan Sarandon, Chinese helmer Jia Zhangke, Egyptian director Tewfik Saleh, Moroccan actor Mohamed Majd and husband and wife Bollywood thesps Ajay and Kajol Devgan will be honored this year at an event whose eclecticism also informs its 15-pic competition and main sidebars.

The 2006 edition's pics are drawn from 22 countries.

Narjiss Nejjar's "Wake-Up Morocco" and Rene Feret's "Il a suffi que maman s'en aille" world preem at Marrakech. "But my priority is not premieres, simply the best films I can find," said fest artistic director Bruno Barde.

Competish highlights look likely to include Andrucha Waddington's admired "The House of Sand," and among lesser-known pics, Romanian Radu Muntean's "The Paper Will Be Blue," a chronicle of a chaotic night in Bucharest hours after the death of Nicolae Ceausescu, and Dane Ole Christian Madsen's "Prague," a heady record of a disintegrating marriage.

"One aim of Marrakech is to discover and support new talent," said fest VP Faical Laraichi.

Marrakech normally screens only one Moroccan film in competish. "We want the event to be truly international," said fest's other VP Nour-eddine Sail.

This year, as an exception, there's a second Moroccan competish player, Faouzi Bensaidi's "WWW -- What a Wonderful World," an off-kilter, jocose hired assassin romancer set in a markedly modern Casablanca, a world of cellphones, high-rise office towers, traffic jams and loneliness.

Competish features multiple features turning on a concern for children -- such as Songyos Sugmakanan's chiller "Dorm" and Jean-Stephane Bron's adoption drama "My Brother Is Getting Married" -- plus acerbic takes on modern existence: Francesca Comencini's Milan-profile "Our Country" and Antonio Chavarrias' take on a Barcelona working class barrio, "Celia's Lives."

Competish is rounded up by Emilio Estevez's "Bobby," Iranian Maziar Miri's socially-tinged "Gradually," Malaysian James Lee's love triangle "Before We Fall In Love Again," German Dominik Graf's '60s-set "The Red Cockatoo" and Robert Favreau's Rwanda massacre record "A Sunday in Kigali."

Beyond "Departed" and "Friend," out-of-competition players include "Oliver Twist," which is helmed by Marrakech jury prexy Roman Polanski, plus a bevy of recent national cinema standouts: Italian Emanuele Crialese's "Golden Door," a psychological take on Sicily to Ellis Island immigration; Egyptian Marwan Hamed's taboo-breaking critical and B.O. smash "Yacoubian Building," and Vishal Bhardwaj's "Omkara," an Indian gangster reworking of "Othello."

Other pics include Jia Zhangke's Venice winner "Still Life," Rachid Bouchareb's "Days of Glory," Eric Barbier's mainstream "The Snake" and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Babel."

Fest also features a Seance Coup de Coeur section for often smaller edgier pics, such as Simone van Dusseldorp's praised Dutch coming-of-ager "Deep," Patrick Tam's father-son drama "After This Our Exile" and Dane Peter Schonau Fog's quirky incest tale "The Art of Crying." All feature problems confronting children.

It made the English critics cry
By Sheela Narayanan

November 17, 2006

OLD fashioned courting. That's how acclaimed director Mira Nair says she bags Hollywood films. As she cheekily admits: 'Hollywood and I flirt with each other quite often.'

Director Mira Nair (with camera) directs Bollywood actress Tabu in The Namesake.

Although she gets daily offers from Hollywood, the 49-year-old award-winning director of Monsoon Wedding and Vanity Fair told The New Paper that she is more keen on telling stories that are close to her heart.

She was in Singapore recently to announce the nominees for the Asian Festival of First Films. The festival showcases first-time Asian film-makers, producers, writers and actors.

She said that her latest film, The Namesake, has been getting rave reviews on the film festival circuit.

'When it was screened at the Rome Film Festival, there was a 25-minute standing ovation. In London, English critics were sobbing into my arms,' she said.

The Namesake, based on the 2000 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Jhumpa Lahiri, is about an Indian couple who relocate to the US. The couple's second-generation children live like Americans until their father's sudden death shocks them back to their roots.

Said Mira: 'As soon as I read the book, I needed to do this film.'

The film cast includes two of Bollywood's finest actors, Irfan Khan and Tabu, alongside American-born Indian actor Kal Penn (of Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle fame) as their son. It will open here next April.

PROLIFIC DIRECTOR

She is also directing Gangster MD, which will star comedian Chris Tucker as a hustler who pretends to be a doctor. The film is based on the popular 2003 Bollywood hit Munnbhai MBBS, which starred Sanjay Dutt.

She is also working on a feature documentary about The Beatles' trip to India to learn transcendental meditation in 1968. Apart from these two projects, she is shooting a series of 12-minute films about Aids in India starring Bollywood actors Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan.

She is also running an annual film-maker's laboratory, Maisha, for talented screenwriters and directors from East Africa and South Asia in Kampala, Uganda. Mira has roped in stalwarts like like Spike Lee and Sophia Coppola to train these new talents. As she says: 'I do it because there are so many stories from Africa and Asia and we need to tell our own stories.'

The Asian Festival of First Films will be held from 29 Nov to 5 Dec. For details, log on to www.asianfirstfilm.com

Her hair extensions melt
By Ho Lian-Yi

November 17, 2006

TEMPERATURES rose in Thai pop star Tata Young's music video El Nin-Yo!, and not just metaphorically either.

Tata Young in her El Nin-Yo! video.

Like most of her videos, this one for the first single from her second English album, Temperature Rising, features the sexpot cavorting suggestively in various states of undress.

A particularly scorching scene has real flames licking a wall behind Tata, 25, as she gyrates on a bed, exhorting: 'I need rain, rain, rain. I'm burning up in here.'

The sprinklers turn on, leaving her drenched. The results are steamy but shooting those scenes was anything but easy.

'There was fire behind me, and I had extensions glued on to my hair. And when there was heat, they started melting,' Tata told The New Paper.

Tata Young vists the gym thrice a week and watches her diet to maintain her sexy figure. -- DAVID TAN

She was here yesterday for a showcase at Dragonfly at St James Power Station to promote Temperature Rising. The album was released two months ago and is available in stores here.

TOUGH VIDEO ACT

El Nin-Yo! was a very tough video to shoot, she said. She usually takes three or four takes each time, but in this one, she had to redo her scenes over and over.

The scene where the water is pouring over her required many retakes and the whole video took three days to complete as it had to be shot from several angles.

Being sexy isn't easy either, she added.

Her role in the video for her English theme song for the 2004 Bollywood smash movie Dhoom was, in her own words, to 'seduce' her co-stars, Indian superstars Uday Chopra, John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan.

That same year, she scandalised her country's culture ministry with her hit single, Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy.

'Some people are like, 'that's such a boring video, because she's just moving around, she's not doing much'. But behind the scenes, it's really hard to get that body,' she said.

She hits the gym three times a week and is careful about what she eats.

Still, as her healthy, energetic and full-bodied look suggests, she has no hang-ups about food.

But the toughest thing about acting sexy is the acting.

'Sometimes it's not easy to pretend the camera is a man,' she said.

Sitting cross-legged, speaking in a loud, confident, American accent (she has an American father), Tata was every bit the consummate professional during this interview. She may be termed 'Asia's Britney Spears' but there was no hint of air-headedness about her.

Tata's hot image, her catchy pop songs and her chameleon-like ability to emulate the pop princesses of the West has reaped huge dividends. In her 10-year career, she has sold 12 million albums.

Her stint on Dhoom single-handedly revitalised Thai interest in Bollywood but she has no plans to act in a Bollywood movie.

She would rather concentrate on singing right now, she said. But critics have complained that her songs and image are too similar to those of Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears.

Some have said that in the video for Zoom, a track from her current album, she tries too hard to be like Jennifer Lopez. But she does not think that is a problem.

'I think that's the whole point,' she retorted. 'It's for people to find out what the distinctive thing about Tata Young is.'

Cable able: Bollywood bite in American pie!
Sumit Jha
[ 16 Nov, 2006 2112hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

With Indian films now being available on cable TV in the US, it's a treat for movie lovers there and a boost for Bollywood!

Number of Indian films being declared blockbusters on the American Box Office is increasing steadily. But that's just the beginning of Bollywood's romance with overseas audiences. And the good news for US-based Indian movie lovers, as much as for the Indian film industry, is that hits like Rang De Basanti, Krrish, Bluffmaster, Swades and Taxi No 9211 will be aired on cable television in the US. With American cable companies offering latest Indian films on their video on demand facility, Bollywood has notched another high in the international film arena.

And director Rakeysh Mehra, whose Rang De Basanti released on the 15th of this month on US cable TV, says the move will surely benefit Bollywood in the long run. "This will definitely prove fruitful for Bollywood in days to come. Initially, Indian movies used to be released only in the theatres in the US and only a few people would get to watch them. But with Indian movies being shown on cable television, their viewership base in the US will expand."

However, filmmaker Rajat Kapoor isn't so optimistic. "Frankly speaking, I don't know how things will shape up in the US in days to come. Generally, these kind of things don't last long. But yes, I do feel that if this happens at all, it will help build a strong international image of Bollywood," he says.

There are also reservations about how this may prove to be damaging for Indian producers. But filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt dismisses any such apprehensions, "Like in India, the films will be shown on US cable TV only after they have completed their Box Office run. If they are shown at the same time as the release of the film in theatres, it would certainly affect the collections of the film."

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh is also hopeful that the move with help promote Bollywood overseas. "Hollywood films have always been of great interest to Indian audiences. And now, demand for Indian movies has also increased in the US. If companies with sound credentials handle the dealings on Indian shores, there's no way it will not be a success."

While film producers and directors seem to be quite excited with the releases of their movies on US cable television, Siddharth Roy Kapur, VP, Marketing and Corporate Communication of one of the Indian film studios that have been signed up for providing content to US cable TV, informs, "All films will be subtitled in English," and adds, "I feel that this is a great leap forward for the Indian film industry. Indian films are becoming increasingly popular in the US. Cable TV would help them to reach more viewers and would be a new revenue stream for Indian studios and producers." And at the end of the day, it's all about money, right?

Ash film runs afoul of animal rights activists
[ 17 Nov, 2006 0049hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

JAIPUR: After the Rajput community breathing down Bollywood director Ashutosh Gowarikar's neck about "checking" historical facts about Mughal emperor Akbar and Jodha Bai for his period production, now it's animal rights activists who have sent him a legal notice for using animals while shooting for the movie.

Gowarikar has been filming a Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai starrer based on lives of Akbar and Jodha Bai here for the past fortnight.

Alleging that he has used 80 elephants, 100 horses and 55 camels for shooting different sequences, Pashu Krurta Nivaran Samiti, a body working for animal welfare, has asked the filmmaker if he had sought permission from the National Board for Animal Welfare for the same.

The legal notice also sought a reply as to why Gowarikar should not be tried for violation of the Cruelty Against Animals Act.

A member of the samiti, Manish Saxena, said a large number of animals were subjected to hardship during the shooting and there was no facility of a vet National Board for using the animals.

He said permission was granted on certain conditions relating to the animals' welfare.

Why Alok Nath Makes a Difference in ?ivah??
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Friday, November 17, 2006]

Sooraj Barjatya? ?ivah? is on its way to becoming a big hit. While Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao are being lauded for their performance apart from Sooraj of course, there? someone else who deserves a lot of praise too. Well, that man is Alok Nath, who playing a simple small town man Krishnakanth makes a place for himself in your heart with his cordial humility and dedicated self respect. The love for his niece Poonam (Amrita Rao) is very genuine. I must say the scenes where Poonam brings the shawl for him each evening before going to the temple brings tears effortlessly, especially in the climax.

Alok Nath has always been associated with Barnjatya? since ?aine Pyaar Kiya?. The self respecting mechanic of Salman Khan starrer values his daughter and friend more than anything else. Who can forget the scene where he after having been incensed by his friend? selfish ungratefulness screams, ?aam chukaonga is five star hotel ke.? Remember that! Alright?t? been a full circle, Alok Nath is very much around. And his contribution to the success of ?ivah? can? be ignored.

As for Barjatya?, well, they truly exemplify what they preach. Simple living, high thinking. Bonds are forever?nd with their old time favourites still around it goes on to prove that they believe in a family that stays together. Forever.

Shabana Azmi is basking in the superlative performance in her last release ?mrao Jaan? while choreographer Farah Khan is busy with the preproduction work of her next film ?m Shanti Om? starring Shahrukh Khan. And both the ladies have something else to celebrate as well.

They will be honoured at Britain? TMG awards on December seventh. Farah is an unlikely choice but considering that she tried to promote Indo-Peace peace through her film ?ain Hoon Na? apart from being an internationally renowned choreographer (she recently choreographed for Latino sensation Shakira) she has been selected for the honour. Arya Babbar goes negative in 'Guru'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, November 17, 2006]

Raj Babbar's son Arya started his career with Raj Kanwar's 'Ab Ke Baras' a few years back.

Though he was reasonably decent, the film flopped and along with it Arya's dreams of stardom. His subsequent films like 'Mudda' and 'Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum' sunk without a trace and Arya disappeared from the Bollywood scene for more than two years until Mani Rathnam signed him on for 'Guru.'

In an attempt to build a second innings, Arya is apparently appearing as a negative character in 'Guru' and he is said to have a meaty role in the film.

Starring Abhishek Bachchan in the title role along with Mithun Chakravorty, Aishwarya Rai, Madhavan and Vidya Balan, 'Guru' has music by A.R.Rahman and is set for release on January 12th.

Don and Babul join the MP3 brigade
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, November 18, 2006]

Post 'Dance Masti Forever,' 'Vivah' and 'Dhoom 2,' there have been numerous other albums that are arriving in an MP3 format on the music stands.

Some of the most recent albums are Bollywood flicks like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's 'Don' and Aadesh Srivastava's 'Babul' along with non-film albums like Sukhwinder Singh's 'Is Dil Se'.

A boon indeed for consumers as they get to hear not just the songs from these films/albums but also dozens of other hits in a price less than 50% of an original CD. One hopes that the trend catches on and helps in eradicating music piracy completely from the Indian market.

'Zamaanat' finally seems to be on a release path coming December and is turning out to be a special outing for all Bachchan fans.

Not many are aware that this is the first time ever in his nearly four decade career that Big B is playing a lawyer in a film. He may have played a cop, a gangster, a business tycoon or a family patriarch in numerous films but coming on the screen as a lawyer is something that he has never done in the past.

To add to that, in the film, he is also shown as visually challenged, one who reluctantly takes up the case of an innocent Arshad Warsi who has been framed after a conspiracy. How he fights this case, with Karisma Kapoor as an inspiration, takes the film to a highly dramatic finale, something which vintage Bachchan fans are bound to lap up with both hands.
