SMAP's Tsuyoshi Kusanagi and Ryoko Hirosue acted in the TV Asahi drama SP, "Ai to Shi wo Mitsumete" (Looking at love and death) ever since the movie version was made 42 years ago. The story is based on a real-life novel by Minoru Kawano about a senior high school girl, Michiko (Miko) who contracted a terminal illness and the 400-plus letters she and her boyfriend Minoru (Mako) attending university wrote to each other over 3 years. Miko died at the age of 21 subsequently. The novel was made into a drama version by TBS followed by the hit movie 42 years ago. This also made Michiko's diary, "Wakaki Inochi no Niki" a bestseller.
Yusuke Santamaria and Koyuki also acted in "Ai to Shi wo Mitsumete" as special guests where Santamaria plays the doctor of the heroine (Hirosue) while Koyuki plays an important character which was not shown in the movie version made during the 1960s. Santamaria and Kusanagi have become close friends through the hosting of TV Asahi variety programme, "puSMAP" thus he was invited to appear in this SP by Kusanagi.

TBS aired a drama SP entitled "27sai no Natsuyasumi" starring Asaka Seto and Yoshino Kimura. This drama is based on a novel by Kei Yuikawa who won the Naoki Award for Writers. The story, "Ashita made no Kyouri" (The distance until tomorrow) was first serialised in 2 magazines, CREA and FRaU with a distinct female character for each magazine's story. After which, the novel would be published on Yahoo Japan and the drama SP would be the finale for this story. The main character in CREA's story is Eiko Takase (Asaka Seto), 27, who works in a publisher while the main character for FRaU would be Risa Sueda (Yoshino Kimura) who works in a family restaurant.
According to TBS, the first half of the drama would be what happened in the novel so far while the second part would be the ending.
Eiko Takase (Seto) is an editor in charge of the erotic (or so-called sexy photos of young idols) section in a male magazine and is tired of her work. Her ex-classmate, Risa Sueda (Kimura) is a manager at the family restaurant and hopes to open a cafe one day but the possibility is diminishing and she is worried about her relationship with her younger boyfriend (Asahi Uchida). They happen to meet their ex-senior high school schoolmate Akishi (Shosuke Tanihara) and go all out to grab the guy while their married friend, Madoka (Emiri Henmi) provides them with advice.
2) Hero SP (Fuji TV)
Cast: Takuya Kimura (SMAP), Shinichi Tsutsumi, Haruka Ayase, Kiichi Nakai, with appearances from Takako Matsu, Hiroshi Abe, Nene Otsuka

The hit drama series "Hero" in 2001 made a comeback in the form of a drama SP in July this year where the original cast members gathered once again. The story is about a big IT company doctoring its accounts and how the prosecution department prepares to charge those responsible for the act. Besides the original cast of SMAP's Kimura Takuya, Matsu Takako, Otsuka Nene, Abe Hiroshi etc, new additions to the SP are Tsutsumi Shinichi, Ayase Haruka and Nakai Kiichi.
The "Hero SP" achieved a high rating of 30.9% in the Kanto area and 27.8% in the Kansai area which makes it the highest-rated non-sports programme this year so far. As the OA timeslot coincided with Japanese soccer player Nakata Hidetoshi announcing his retirement from the national team and heading to Harvard in the US to study for his MBA, news programmes at other TV stations were screening reports of this matter which might have resulted in viewers switching channels.
