rasa tu marketing decision, bukannya celcom taknak buat, but when dorang kasi standard call rate ke 10sen seminit, operator lain akan buat sama juga...then apaler jadi ngan postpaid pula?

dorang nak kasi seragam call rate tu ngan suma operator lain..

Celcom's move may start price war again
By GOH THEAN EU

March 4 2006

TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd's mobile arm Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd may have ignited another round of price war when it halved the price of its prepaid starter packs, making them the cheapest in the country.

Malaysian mobile phone companies are trying to get more customers in a maturing market where some 70 per cent of the population have handphones.

Celcom roped in fewer customers than rivals Maxis Communications Bhd and DiGi.Com Bhd in the fourth quarter of last year. Maxis prepaid packs now sell for RM8.80, while DiGi sells them at RM8.50 each.

The move could signal Celcom's intent to tap the low-income market, said analysts who were not impressed.

"I'm not discounting anything, but it is difficult to see how mobile operators can benefit from irrational price competition," said a local analyst.

Celcom's latest prepaid starter kits now retail at RM4.99 apiece. However, it does not directly target the mass market as it will only be available at its service centre in Kuala Lumpur International Airport and in flights of AirAsia Bhd.

It also comes with an airtime of just RM3.

Dubbed the AirAsia-Celcom Prepaid Starter Pack, it is a co-branding marketing partnership between budget airline AirAsia and Celcom.

Celcom chief executive officer Datuk Shazalli Ramly explained that the move has nothing to do with initiating a price war, as the prepaid packs are mainly focused on inbound tourists.

"This (inbound tourist) is a new market segment which has huge potential. I can't reveal the exact figure, but I can tell you that the number is huge," Shazalli told the press during a media conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The partnership will allow Celcom to tap AirAsia's passengers. South-East Asia's biggest low-fare airline carried 812,492 passengers in December last year, 35 per cent more than a year earlier.

Celcom added more than 500,000 new customers in the fourth quarter. But it still trails behind Maxis and DiGi, which have added more than 800,000 and 600,000 new users respectively.

Shazalli said the company does not plan to reduce the price of its Xpax starter pack as sales are very encouraging. "It is never in our plan to reduce the price of Xpax, it will maintain at RM10," he said.

Celcom, AirAsia lancar pek prabayar
