Kareena Kapoor's Big Moment

On Thursday at a special screening of her premium product Omkara at Yashraj Studios Kareena's guest list read like a who's -who of Bollywood.

Everyone from Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar to Kareena's immediate family showed up to rave about her performance.

But the proudest moment during the evening came for Vishal Bhardwaj. After the show, Mani Rathnam who was a special invitee for the evening sent Vishal an SMS which read, "As far as I'm concerned this is the film of the year."

Considering Mani has his own Guru coming up for release at year-end that's quite a compliment.

"Everyone was incredibly nice. For someone who's always been an outsider it was a great home-coming."

Kareena was seen wringing her hands, biting her lips and of course chewing her nails in nervousness. "I was never this nervous. Not even for my first film," she whispered.

Even Ash has done item song

Starlet Amrita Arora says she is open to item numbers and sees them as a "bonus".

"Firstly I detest the word 'item' itself. I have zero reservations as far as cameos and such songs are concerned. I see it as an added advantage, rather a bonus," Amrita says.

"I think it's great fun and gives you good exposure. Aishwarya Rai did it, Shah Rukh (Khan) and Malaika (Arora-Khan) have done it. Even Robert De Niro and Angelina Jolie have done it."

Amrita would like to work with Shah Rukh, Salman Khan, Yash Chopra and Karan Johar.

"I love Indian cinema. I have always wanted to be an actress. Ever since I was a kid, I dreamt of becoming an actress," she asserts.

Bebo rehearsed her love scenes: Vishal Bhardawaj

Q: What are your apprehensions about Omkara?
A: I feel a very positive nervousness. I'm overwhelmed by the curiosity the film has created. But I'm also scared by it. I just want the film to make enough money to let me make another film again the way I want to. People are expecting a lot from Omkara.

The publicity by my producer Kumar Mangat is beyond anything I had expected. It's so important for a quality product to be pitched in the right way. The promos and the music have done well. The music was released late.

Q: Why?
A: We mixed the songs in London. After we finished recording all the tracks, they wanted one more track. The Rahat Fateh Ali Khan number was added at the last minute

I've patched up with Karan Johar: Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor is no more the fiery girl we knew. But still, she has that gleam in her eye which says 'I am ready to take on the world'.

Q: What are you playing in 'Omkara'?
A: I play Dolly Mishra (a character fashioned after Desdemona) who is hopelessly in love with the don Omkara. I play this girl from Meerut who is literate and yet who is so blindly in love with the don (Ajay Devgan), that she does whatever Ajay says.

She blindly follows him and is completely devoted to him. She never opposes him. She leaves her family and quits college, all for the love of this don.

Q: 'Omkara' is an adaptation of Othello. Have you read Othello?
A: I studied Othello in school. But I feel Vishal's version is bigger and better than the original. People are expecting a lot from this film.

Q: What is your gut feeling? Will 'Omkara' click?
A: One thing is sure though. It is a heart-wrenching film and will make people cry.

Q: You had several missed opportunities to work with Ajay Devgan ?
A: Yes, none of them worked out. And I am glad. 'Omkara' is something special. I shared great chemistry with Ajay on the sets.

Q: After 'Omkara', you have 'Don'?
A: I have a very small part in 'Don' but the song will surely rock. 'Yeh mera dil' is an iconic song. So far, it has been Helen Aunty's song. After 'Don' releases, it will be my song.

Q: Then you have Zoya Akhtar's film with Hrithik?
A: Yes but it's going on the floors only next year. I don't know what I am doing for the rest of this year. Till then, I have no work. Can you believe that?

Q: Are you sad that Ram Gopal Varma scrapped 'Time Machine'?
A: What can I do about that? That's Ramu's decision. I agree that I was approached and I was keen to do the film, but I was never signed. It's okay. Such things happen in the industry.

Q: You opted out of Harry Baweja's sci-fi film?
A: I could not do it. I left it almost immediately. Nor did I keep the producer in the lurch. Why be uncomfortable and do a film? I am making a conscious effort that I don't want to do any run-of-the-mill cinema (pauses).

Q: Go on...
A: I have been spoilt out of choice after 'Omkara'. I have learnt a lesson. I will not do worthless films. I will wait even a year before I sign something worthwhile.

Q: You have patched up with Karan Johar?
A: I have changed. I have mellowed down. Karan is like family to me. I regret having differences with him. I think life is too short to hold any grudges.

Q: Is your sister Karisma set to make a comeback?
A: She is open to narrations and will definitely do a film at some point in time. People are pursuing her to come back simply because she is a great artiste. I think she should do at least a couple of films a year.

The time has come to play Grey: Dia Mirza

From doing an item number in 'Phir Hera Pheri' to playing a psychologist in 'Alag', the sizzling Dia Mirza is on a roll... She has signed five films in the past one month. TWF correspondent Vickey Lalwani chats up the beautiful actor.

Q: Your item number in 'Phir Hera Pheri' was the talk of the town. How did it happen?
A: I got a call from Firoz Nadiadwala. He told me that he wanted me to do an item number which would be the introductory song. I was told to listen to it before I gave my nod of consent. I was bowled over when I heard it.

Q: Which films are you looking forward to?
A: I have recently signed a film with Anant Mahadevan which will be produced by T Series. I am also entering the regional arena with a Bengali film produced by Raja Mukerji (Rani's brother).

I am quite excited about that. My mother is a Bengali and I know the language, so it will be fun. Besides, there is 'Munnabhai 2nd Innings', 揌oneymoon Tours And Travels Pvt Ltd

Shah Rukh isn't angry with me: Hrithik Roshan

Q: Krissh has turned you into a children's icon?
A: It's a great feeling. To have films like Koi匨il Gaya and Krissh in my career is in itself a blessing. I've been accepted as both Rohit, who's mentally challenged, and Krissh who's a super-hero. In Koi Mil Gaya audiences connected emotionally with my character.

It was almost an acceptance of the real childlike and innocent personality in us as opposed to the artifice that we all have to assume and project in society. Krissh, on the other hand, is all about the mystique of the perfect exterior

I collect the books but never read them: Dr Amitabh Bachchan

Q: The de Montford university at Leicester has conferred a doctorate on you. How does Dr Bachchan sound to you?
A: 'Dr Bachchan' was my father ! A Ph.D in English Literature from Cambridge, on WB Yeats and Occultism, in 1954, perhaps the first Indian to get this distinction from that University. That achievement shall remain embedded in me always. None of my achievements, honors and degrees can and will ever match that.

The Jhansi University conferred a doctorate on me the year before last, De Montford does one this month and at the end of the year the Delhi University wishes an honorary doctorate for me too.

I am of course overwhelmed and deeply humbled by this recognition and I express my extreme gratitude to each of these prestigious institutions, but truly feel unworthy of them. My contribution, if at all there is any, shall always pale in front of my father's.

Q: You come from a family with an acute literary/ scholarly bent of mind. How much of an academic are you at heart? Do you get time to read a lot? Who are your favourite authors?
A: I am an acute failure in this department, as I am in various others. I am a graduate in science and have lived and been brought up in an atmosphere of poetry and literature and academics due to my father.

Whatever I have, which isn't much really, is all that I have imbibed or accumulated because of my proximity to my parents.

There has not been any concerted effort to follow or pursue academics. There is a deep desire to do so. But how and when, I just do not know.

Q: You're just being your over-modest self.
A: I'm serious. The genes reflect in the progeny. My niece, Nilima Bachchan, Ajitabh's eldest, has just done a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering from UK. If there is a genuine Dr Bachchan after my father it is her. My other niece, Namrata is a painter and writer.

My daughter Shweta, is a voracious reader and a great mind. From our side of the family she is perhaps the only informal academic.

But I get no time to read. I collect the latest books and browse through them and store them for a rainy day, hoping that they shall give me company when I am confined to a chair or a bed. But I am a bad reader. I am presently content with my fathers books and his wisdom.

Q: Do you think formal education is a necessary qualification for an actor? You've been to college. Mr Dilip Kumar hasn't.
A: I think a formal education is necessary for an individual pursuing any vocation. Formal education just does not bring in academic knowledge.

It brings with it curriculum, discipline, forebearence, competitiveness, understanding, vision and so many other qualities that are so essential for everyday existence in a normal society.

My days in college may not have a direct reflection on my present profession. But I cannot wish away the other aspects of its benefits to me as an individual. An actor's performance will always betray his inner build -up as a human.

Dilip Saab may not have gone to college. But can you really doubt the reflection of the quality of his inner self in his performances. That he developed these qualities independently and not through an educational institution, gives so much more credence to his unassailable genius.

Q: How much did you stress on Abhishek and Shweta's education?
A: We stressed a lot. But in the end our bottom line was, educate yourself yes, but educate yourself to be a good human first.

When Lewd men made Bipasha run

Bipasha Basu says she doesn't get rattled easily. But a bunch of unkempt, lewd men did the trick when shooting dance sequences for Omkara.

Bipasha told Mumbai Mirror in an interview that she ran away from the stage and only returned when she was told the men were actors who had dressed down for a role in the audience.

揑 saw the crowd and I had a panic attack and ran away. I had never seen so many unshaven, unkempt, unbathed and lecherous men in a crowded sweaty place,

Ajay-Kareena love scene, very erotic!

An intimate love scene between Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor in Vishal Bharadwaj's "Omkara", which releases Friday, is raising a lot of interest.

"There is a three-four minute love scene between Ajay and Kareena. Though it is an erotic scene, it has been shot very aesthetically. The scene is part of a montage for the song 'O sathi re'," said a source who has seen the film.

Those present on the sets said that Bharadwaj, who has reportedly filmed the scene "superbly", had to reassure a hesitant Kareena that it would be done very tastefully.

"Kareena was not comfortable doing such an intimate scene. But when she saw the monitor after giving the first shot, she agreed to do the entire scene without any hassles," the source told.

In Shakespeare's "Othello", on which the film is based, the protagonist suffers from an inferiority complex due to the beauty of his lover. Bharadwaj, therefore, is said to have wanted someone who looked beautiful even without makeup, and found Kareena to fit the bill perfectly.

She plays a Brahmin girl who leaves her family for Ajay, a half-Brahmin and the chieftain of outlaws.

"Kareena had said that Ajay is the heart of the film and her character - Dolly - is the soul of the film. And surely the film belongs to Kareena, Ajay and Saif Ali Khan and it will be tough to decide who will walk away with the credits finally," added the source.

A special screening was recently organised for the cast and crew of "Omkara".

Preity: Dirty Tapes embarrassed me!

Preity Zinta would have been happy if it wasn't for the blasts. Both her delayed films Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna and Jaan-e-Man have been finally wrapped up within a day of each other.

"My kismet is such, I tell you! Both films started in New York. Both got delayed together. Both continued shooting almost together. Both ended with me shooting for a part of a song. My dates did clash. But I sorted them out. Now Alvidaa will come out in August and Jaan-e-Man later."

It's the day after Mumbai rocked to a horrific tune. Preity still can't get over the suddenness of it.

"11/7 will go down as one of the darkest days in Mumbai. I was in court for the second hearing of my case against a tabloid. I had no clue what was happening even when I got out and was caught in the traffic. There was a huge ambulance in front of me.

My phone was jammed. No one called, so I had no idea. It was only when I turned on the TV at home that I realized what had happened. I couldn't sleep the whole night," says the groggy Zinta as she heads for shooting the morning after.

"It's time we did something drastic, like New York after 9/11. The city has lost its rough edges. Earlier you couldn't walk freely in certain parts of NY. The streets are safe now. Crime has dropped. Mumbai shouldn't be an easy target. It's so sad to see the working-class hit so badly.

Visuals of severed limbs will remain with me. We feel so helpless. We seriously need to think of the city's security. Stop the unchecked influx of migrants in the city. Check the slums.

Instead of looking at the root of problems the government shuts down discs and pubs after such a tragedy. How does that help anything? You need to clamp down on the root causes of such happenings. I can't imagine terrorists sitting in clubs after perpetrating their crime. What's the deal here?"

Preity's battle against a tabloid continues. "The second hearing went well. The next hearing is in August匢'm fighting for my right to dignity.

It's the first time I had to look down at my toes in embarrassment (after the Salman tapes were published). Happily female journalists have supported me in this fight. Whenever I leave the industry I should do so with my head held high."

She's just shot a song for KANK. "The film is over. We just finished a song. I danced my head off with Amitji and Abhishek. They're both so tall! I had to really crane my neck and feet to keep with them. This was my first song with the two.

Amitji is outstanding. He wasn't well. His mom was in hospital. His house was flooded. And he was dancing away with me and Abhishek! If this isn't dedication, what is? We're just novices in front of Amitji.

But I wonder what he must have been like when he was younger! I tend to grumble about little things like a broken a.c or a postponed schedule. Amitji never complains. I recently read the book on The Making Of Sholay to get to know Amitji and Jaya Aunty."

She gets sentimental about the KANK wrapup party on 10 July. "I was the first to leave after Amitji. I had to leave early because of my court case the next day. But we had a blast."

I can't believe I'm this old: Priyanka

Just close family, no one else匱hat's how Priyanka has planned her birthday.

"Arrey what birthday, yaar?" she says with mock-exasperation. "I'm going to be 24 today. Isn't that a little old to get all excited about my birthday?

Please, cake, balloon and all卼hat's for kids. Gosh, don't even remind me of my age! I can't believe I'm this old! My last birthday-party was when I was 5. I still remember the cake, candles, singing, my parents making it the most special day of my childhood. In adulthood that excitement is gone."

Priyanka has her best friend from Delhi flying in tonight to bring in her birthday. "Plus my two other non-filmy friends. That's it. Besides them there will only be my parents and my kid brother.

That's my world, and that's whom I want to bring in my birthday with. I'm a very private person. I like spending special days of my life with those who make my life special."

The day before the birthday there is a sudden unexpected chutti for Priyanka. "Shooting was called off. But I might have shooting. Fortunately it's during the second-half so I can sleep late on my birthday. But no, I don't expect a late night tonight," she said on the afternoon before her birthday.

"Not with my family and friends. They are early-birds. But yes, I do like surprise birthday parties. I don't expect one this time. And I do like lots of gifts on my birthday, who doesn't?

But you know what's my greatest birthday gift? To have those who love me around me. I'd love to have my dear ones with me for my birthday. I'm very shy of people I'm not close to. Accepting birthday wishes from strangers becomes a bit of an ordeal. But I guess I've no choice."

She gets reflective about the year that's gone by. "I remember my last birthday happened on the sets of Rohan Sippy's Bluff Master. Abhishek and Rohan got a cake, and I cut it. A lot has happened since then. I'd say my career has swung into the fast lane. In the past year Bluff Master and Krissh have become hits.

Now I've my fingers crossed for Salaam-e-Ishq and Aap Ki Khatir. Both have shaped up really well. So yeah, my one birthday wish is to continue holding on to the place that I've made for myself. But if you give me only one birthday wish it'd have to be my dad's health.

I want him to come back from his final surgery in the US next month fully healed and whole

Rani didn't break Aditya's marriage!

Rani's fondness for Yash Raj Films is no hidden fact but when someone spread rumours about her cozy bond with YRF's young turk Aditya all hell broke loose.

According to a recent report, director Aditya Chopra has filed for divorce from his wife of five years Payal Chopra because he is in love with Rani Mukherji. The report also said that soon after the divorce Adi will get engaged to Rani.

The Mukerjis are apparantly appalled at the rumours.

"Why is Rani being dragged into their domestic problems," fumes Rani's mom Krishna.

Bipasha as Billo Chaman Bahar!

Glamorous actress Bipasha Basu plays a rustic character, an abuse-mouthing singer and dancer, in Vishal Bharadwaj's ready-to-release "Omkara".

The role is quite the reverse of her recent film "Corporate", in which she plays a sophisticated, city-bred business executive. Her performance has fetched her much praise.

"My character in 'Omkara' is very colourful. Billo Chaman Bahar is a singer and dancer in a small village. She is very straightforward, fiery. She liberally sprinkles abuses in her speech, but in a very sweet manner. Viveik (Oberoi) and Billo like each other in the movie," says Bipasha.

The actress is playing a village belle for the first time in the film, which is a Hindi adaptation of Shakespeare's "Othello".

"I have never played a small town girl in a raw manner before. The reason why I accepted this role is that Vishal told me that it was not about being a leading lady but playing an interesting character."

What was Bipasha's first reaction after reading the script?

"My first reaction was to know 'Othello'. All the characters in the film are very exciting and interesting. I want to do different kinds of films."

Like her co-stars, Bipasha admits that Vishal knows his craft well and there was no scope for any confusion on the sets.

"He knows what he wants. His research is complete. Initially, he was not happy with the 'Bidee' song shot and he didn't hide it. He is transparent, humble and encouraging."

Bipasha was upset when director Neeraj Vora engaged another artist to dub her voice in "Phir Hera Pheri" without informing her. But she is happy that Vishal has used her voice in the crime-thriller "Omkara".

"He recorded my dialogues, heard it repeatedly and finalised it. It is my first sync sound film. On the first day I was very nervous about the ambience and all."

Bipasha has item number "Bidee jalai re" in the film, which she says is her favourite.

"It is a raw, sexy and sensuous song. It's very realistically picturised. I had to lip sync for it. And I did not know if I could pull it off convincingly. Viveik and Ajay (Devgan) helped me out."

"I am wearing a 'ghagara' and 'choli' in the song for the first time. There were 200 guys with beard and moustaches around me. It was scary. Initially, I was very nervous but I was fine after rehearsals."

Bipasha plays Viveik's love interest in "Omkara".

Praising Viveik, she says: "He is sweet, enthusiastic, very much into his work. I have seen his 'Saathiya' and I liked him in it. He is very energetic, friendly and cooperative. I didn't have any difficult moment with him."

Bipasha is surprised how easily Saif Ali Khan picked up the dialect.

"Saif is the most interesting, good looking person. He is good to speak with. It is amazing how easily he picked up the language."

If the film clicks, it will add another feather in Bipasha's cap even as she rides high on the success of "Corporate".

SRK is no more a good boy!

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who pioneered the art of crafting bubblegum romances, treads the unconventional path with his forthcoming "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" (KANK) that releases Aug 11.

The star-studded film, which features Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bhachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji, deals with extramarital affairs, a banned area in Johar's films so far.

In his previous films - "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" (KKHH) and "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" (K3G) - the heroes and heroines were too idealistic to be true. But with KANK, Johar crosses the traditional threshold and enters a more realistic world to look at modern-day relationships.

Johar feels that in today's world, adultery is more rampant than ever. The film is therefore an endeavour to examine extramarital affairs with an open mind.

"It is a human drama with glam and gloss intact but I have tried to keep it real. It is something which most couples would identify with," said Johar in an interview.

Basically, KANK is about meeting the right people at a wrong time.

In the film Shah Rukh and Rani are married to two different people and pretend to be happy despite the dissatisfaction brewing below the surface. One fine day they bump into each other and realise they are made for each other.

Shah Rukh describes KANK as a bold film and adds that it is like new wine in an old bottle.

He says Johar, who created Rahul - an ideal son, husband, brother and friend - with KKHH and K3G, kills that idealistic image with KANK.

"Rahul is sarcastic, cynical, a failure and not a nice man. All those women, children, daughters, wives and mothers who idolised him as son or husband will change their opinion," Shah Rukh told CineBlitz.

But he feels that in spite of all the irregular features, KANK will hit the right chord with audiences.

Though Johar, who has co-scripted the film with Shibani Bathija, the screenwriter of the Kajol and Aamir Khan starrer "Fanaa", claims he did a lot of emotional research before penning the KANK story, rumour mills beg to differ.

They say the film is partially inspired by Hollywood flick "Closer" and Yash Chopra's "Silsila".

"I party a lot and have seen many relationships upfront. To be more specific, I saw 'After Sunrise' in London, in which ex-lovers meet and it seems they might end up having an affair. I heard conversations of real life couples. I read a self-help book called 'Fighting For Your Marriage'.

"I met a marriage counsellor in Delhi. So, I have done plenty of emotional research. Of course, a story, however real, has to be told in a fictional and entertaining way," said Johar.

If making this film was arduous work for Johar, it was taxing for his favourite star Shah Rukh to play the character because he couldn't identify with it.

"I was embarrassed doing some scenes of the film. I am not a prude but I found it odd that I sleep with someone else's wife in the film. I felt shy doing them (the scenes) and I blushed while saying certain dialogues," said Shah Rukh.

Apart from changing the theme of the film, Johar had to restructure the casting as well. Originally, he wanted to rope in Shah Rukh, Kajol, Ajay Devgan and Rani Mukerji for the lead roles.

And when Kajol, who is Karan's lucky mascot and plays a guest role in KANK, and her hubby turned down the offer, Rani got into her shoes and Preity replaced Rani.

So, in the movie, Rani will be seen in the role meant for Kajol and Preity will be seen playing the part meant for Rani.

Apart from these irregular features, the film has retained some old conventions. It continues the trend of the four-word title with the first one starting with 'K'.

Breathtaking locations are one of the main highlights of a Johar film and KANK, shot extensively in New York, New Jersey, New Haven, Philadelphia and East Hartford, Connecticut, too, has picturesque locales.

The major portion of the film has been shot in the US in a single schedule and the cost of the film is above Rs.50 million.

Mixed responses are floating in from different segments of the trade circle. Some are saying the film is going to be a hit while others feel that it won't work.

In a few weeks, the verdict will be out. Watch this space.

Sunny Deol's Pak connection!

Sunny Deol, who emerged as a diehard patriot in films like "Border", "Gadar - Ek Prem Katha" and "Hero", will be seen as a Pakistani nationalist in writer-producer-director-actor Ammtoje Mann's "Kaafila".

"Kaafila" is called a path-breaking film in many ways. Probably for the first time in Indian cinema, the main protagonist in the film is a Pakistani patriot.

For Sunny Deol, this is a complete role-reversal because in the past he has played anti-Pakistani roles. As a result, Pakistanis in Pakistan and other countries like the US and Britain shunned his films.

In fact, in the US and Britain, distributors refuse to buy films starring Sunny.

But with Mannerism Films (P) Ltd's "Kaafila", Sunny is expected to hit the right chord with the Pakistani audiences.

The Pakistani connection of the film does not end here - both the female leads are from Pakistan -- Sana Nawaz is a top film actress from Pakistan and Mona Lisa is a well-known face on Pakistan television.

The film is slated for an October/November release.

Tusshar Kapoor turns bad boy

Tusshar Kapoor whose performance as a mute character in the recently released 'Golmaal-Fun unlimited' received good reviews, is busy these days preparing for his first-ever negative role in Apoorva Lakhia抯 'Shootout at Lokhandwala'.

The film which goes on floors from August 3, is based on true incident of an encounter by the Mumbai Police with gangsters who were hiding in a flat in Lokhandwala complex, a posh locality in western suburbs of Andheri in the early 1990s.
