He's small
Kare wa chiisai desu

He's a small man.
Kare wa chiisai otoko desu.

She's strange.
Kanojo wa hen desu.

She's a strange woman.
Kanojo wa hen na onna desu.

That box is empty.
Sono hako wa kara desu.

That is an empty box.
Sore wa kara no hako desu.

Pronunciation
Japanese is not especially difficult to pronounce, but please note the following:

Short Vowels
a as in father
i as in machine
u as in rule
e as in yes
o as in solo

Long Vowels
aa (the sound is long)
ii or i " "
uu " "
ei or e " "
oo " "

Hold the long sounds at least twice as long as the short ones and don't let the sound change from start to finish...

When the two vowels occur together in a word, let the pure quality of each one be heard, one after the other...

You may hear native speakers dropping the vowels "i" and "u" (especially the latter in the word "desu") as shown here:

I like sukiyaki
Watashi wa s'kiyaki ga s'ki des'. (dropped u's)

He worked in the northern branch office.
K'ta no sh'ten de hatarakimash'ta. (dropped i's)

You can learn to do this by imitating, but it is also permissible to retain these sounds as written in this note...

Except for some very special instances, every syllable in Japanese gets the same rhythm count and the same stress...

Sentence Structure

The verb in a Japanese sentence or clause appears at the end, so that the grammatical order follows this formula:

subject+object+verb

as in this sentence:

Kanojo wa akai sukato o haite imasu.
She red skirt wearing is.
She is wearing a red skirt.

and this sentence:

Kanojo wa akai sukato o haite imasen.
She red skirt wearing isn't.
She isn't wearing a red skirt

Interrogative sentences are constructed by adding the particle ka after the verb. Thus we get:

Kanojo wa akai sukato o haite imasu ka?
She red skirt wearing is?
Is she wearing a red skirt?
