after watching the grand premiere of memoirs of geisha yesterday, i would conculde that some people would love it while some people wold hate it.

since I haven't read the book, I haven't set any bar for expectation and I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. zhang ziyi gave a really astounding performance -and would deserve an oscar for her potrayal as sayuri. i particularly loved the performance of the young sayuri (chiko)..

i love the scene where young sayuri meet the chairman for the first time since she had already lost her childhood.

but i find it is particularly weird when it was a japanese movie, but everyone was talking in english..

gong li as the rival of sayuri also give astounding performance, it's just the part where she jst left the geisha's house, I feel it's not really complete.. like the movie was just dismissing her character like that..

i love the ending

they change the scene before hatsumomo was sent away from the house... arrrghhhhhhh...

the ending also like hanging on something..but that understandable because if the story after that ending scene is just about how shes getting old...move on to US..bla...bla...bla..

Memoirs of a Geisha tells the fictional story of Chiyo, a
young Japanese girl, whose family, unable to support her,
sell her to a geisha house in the city of Kyoto during the
1930s. A geisha is a professional female companion for
men in Japan, trained in music, dancing, and the art of
conversation. The geisha training is a life of virtual slavery,
and Chiyo finds herself working as maid to a malevolent
geisha called Hatsumomo who, jealous of Chiyo抯 beauty,
makes her life utterly miserable. One day, as Chiyo weeps
by a stream in the city, a wealthy man stops and comforts
her. Chiyo, deeply moved by the man抯 kindness, knows
that she will never forget him. Two years later, a geisha
called Mameha, as kind as Hatsumomo is cruel, takes
Chiyo under her wing. Chiyo, now renamed Sayuri,
becomes a successful geisha, renowned for her beauty.
Then one day she meets the man who had comforted her
by the stream. But life does not run smoothly for Sayuri and
there are powerful obstacles that prevent the two from
coming together .:hmm: :hmm::hmm:

Bukan ke dah ada thread Memoirs ni dulu? :stp: Anyway...I've read Memoirs umpteenth times cover to cover and actually consider myself one of the first people to have read it (first time in 1997, time tu dia baru jek diterbitkan) and you could say I know every line by heart.

Sorry to say but the movie didn't quite come up to par with the book. It was a good try but pales by comparison. However, logically speaking, I guess it is an impossible task to squeeze in the entire storyline in the span of just 2 hours.

Sebenarnya, tak byk sgt yg depa ubah...tapi perubahan yg dilakukan very  ketara. Cth Nobu tu in the book ada satu tgn. Masa the war tu, Nobu dan bukan the chairman yg selamatkan Sayuri dan sorokkan dia kat tempat pembuat kimono tu. Mat Salleh yg Sayuri 'scandal' dgn at the end tu, in the book bukan general mat salleh tapi a japanese minister.

I'll take the book over the movie anyday. :bgrin:

totally agree with you. i read this  book 7 years back, and dah lupa kat mana letak buku ni. just remember a few things, like.. how japanese so fascinated with women's neck as much as the american fascinated with women's thigh/leg. haven't seen this movie yet, forgot all the details, and i'd still prefer to read the book first before watching this movie.

i bought this book 7 years ago, bcause of the cover, which i thought was a romance novel or something, and because it was a  best seller at that time..sape yg dah baca 'tis by frank mccourt and loving it, would want to read this.

do not like the movie, doesnt reflect the true image of geisha, setakat fiction saje dalam movie, but a biography more vividly in the novel. tengok saja style rambut geisha dalam movie, tu dah bukan menunjukkan geisha sebenar, pun tak ikat riben dgn warna yg tentu.

ambe cuma berkesempatan membaca novel terjemahan bahasa melayu. Tidak berkesempatan menonton filemnya.

Novel ini telah diterjemah oleh Sdr Abd Latif Bidin. Secara berterus-terang ambe tak pernah dengar nama nie...beli novel nie pun sebab hampa. ambe gie MPH untuk cara novel Azizi Hj Abdullah - sangeetha, tapi tidak ketemu...akhirnya capai je buku nie & bayar.

Versi terjemahan bagi ambe cukup tebal & tulisan amatlah halus. ambe yang rabun nie sukar nak meneliti tulisan, butiran bicara yang cuba disampaikan, mata cepat letih.

Penterjemah berjaya menyampaikan mesej yang penulis asal cuba kongsikan. Abd Latif Bidin berjaya membawa ambe ke alam ciptaan penulis asal. Satu pujian buat beliau.

Cuma ambe sedih, usaha penterjemah tidak dinobatkan dengan sewajarnya oleh penerbit buku ini (versi melayu)...namanya ditulis cukup halus, tidak terpapar dalam kulit depan.

Wallahu'alam

tambahan: terjumpa profil sdr Abd Latif Bidin : http://www.proz.com/profile/7051
