aku nak komen pasal sesetengah orang yg berpendapat bahawa bidang philosophy ialah bidang yg tak sesuai lagi ntuk dipelaj ...
Why study Philosophy? This questionkeep on recurring whenever we sat down having a :tea::tea:at the Kopitam shop. I not defending the subject because I am not anardent fan of the subject when I was in college. Engineering was mypassion ( Electronics was my major), however, after walking into lifeI begin to see the light. We grow up and start having children andthrough their tender mind they begin to ask simple questions which Icannot offer any answer. Some of the questions baffled me like 'Whythe chili red?', 'Why the moon keeps following us while driving?' and'Why we must have babies and where they come from?'. I failedmiserably....my mind are not trained to answer them. I attendedphilosophy in college briefly just to pass the paper but failed toutilize it. I posting this excerpt from an article just to answer
According to the Times ofLondon, in the August15, 1998 issue, speaking specifically of philosophy in the UnitedStates:
The great virtue of philosophy is that it teaches notwhat to think, but how to think. It is the study of meaning, of theprinciples underlying conduct, thought and knowledge. The skills ithones are the ability to analyse, to question orthodoxies and toexpress things clearly. However arcane some philosophical texts maybe - and not everybody can come to grips with the demands of Austrianlogical positivism - the ability to formulate questions and followarguments is the essence of education. It can also be studied at many levels. In the US, wherethe number of philosophy graduates has increased by 5 per cent a yearduring the 1990s, only a very few go on to become philosophers. Theiremployability, at 98.9 per cent, is impressive by any standard.Philosophy has always been a good training for the law; but it isequally useful for computer scientists. In this country, the HigherEducation Statistics Survey puts philosophy of science right up withmedicine in its employment record for graduates. Philosophy is, in commercial jargon, the ultimate"transferable work skill". Why would employers in business, management, publicadministration, and such professions as journalism, public health, criminal justice, and the legal professions be attracted tophilosophy majors?
The answer that is frequently given is that such professions findthey have increasing need for candidates who are less narrowlytrained, who are able to look at issues from a variety of viewpoints, who have the ability to think questions through, on the basis ofsound reasoning and solid evidence. |

Philosophy is the love and pursuit of Wisdom...therefore there is nothing seriously wrong with it.
Wisdom is ubiquitous and free..just crank your brain a little bit. At some level,we all want wisdom to live. No one want to live and wonder on this world as a fool, hubbled by the false beliefs about important matter and misled by counterfait values that to nothing but misery....like adoring a bomoh who hardly finished school.
Because of this, philosophers have always suggested that it is important for us to examine our belief.
Back to belief and opinion....like our bomoh who claims to have divine wisdom. Are those beliefs justified? Are they true? Are they capable of giving us good guidence in life? That beg another question. Do we have among current beliefs real knowledge about the world in which we live, as well as about ourself, or we are just stuck with nothing better then just opinion? Hmmmmm. |

Question, and some of your very belief wil get broken.
Some other will get strengthened.
Would you be ready to break free and adopt new belief and ideas? |

Philosophy is meant to be broken, dismantled, examined and sometimes aptly disposed when it outlived it usefulness. Its not a religious dogmas which we readily embraced. without question.
What happened to Karl Marx theories of ' Thesis, Anti-thesis and Synthesis'? Nobody preach communism anymore. Its just another academic abstraction...may be! |

Bertrand Russell:
"Philosophy is to be studied, not for the sake of any definite answers to its questions, since no definite answers can, as a rule, be known to betrue, but rather for the sake of the questions themselves; because these questions enlarge our conception of what is possible, enrich our intellectual imagination, and diminish the dogmatic assurance which closes the mind against speculation; but above all because, through the greatness of the universe which philosophy contemplates, the mind also is rendered great, and becomes capable of that union with the universe which constitutes its highest good." |
