There are two parts to improving English or any other language in this world.
1) Reading
Reading would give the exposure to the sentence construction and the use of various words as well as new vocabularies. To begin, focus on simple sentences and understand the construction and combinations. Later, as u progress, u will understand why such sentences are different from one another.
Remember, different subjects give you different vocabularies and may have different types of sentence construction. Passive, active sentences. Scientific topics/articles may be different from English Literature. It would be good to be exposed to a few types of articles for exposure.
2) Speaking
Speaking is the most difficult part of the proficient use of any language. Once u have strong vocabulary foundation, u may attempt to speak. Speaking takes time as you need to find the right tone of voice, speed and comfort in pronounciation. What I do is that after reading some articles, I would sit alone and start to explain what I've read to myself in English without looking at the article. If you could do it, its a good start.

I forgot. If anyone is interested in refining how to speak better, try reading comics. Irregardless of whether its Batman or Archies, they all portray methods of speaking and dialogues useful for everyone.
The method helped me.

as for me, if you want to master anything...you have to have INTEREST.. without it...nothing will work ![](static/image/smiley/default/smile.gif)

basically, i think u can improve by read, comprehen, listen and speak... like i used to tell my students before... if u want to improve, read... start with something light, one that captures your interest... it can be magazines like Cleo or Women's Weekly and the like... or comics as mentioned by R6.... then slowly u move to heavier stuff....
apart from that, try listening to news read in English... i won't really recommend songs as some also have grammatical errors in them... but it won't hurt to listen to them...
speak, don't be shy.... i came from a family who communicates in English at home... i have to admit, i do think in English and i do face difficulties when writing in BM...some people think that when we speak in English, we tend to be a show off and stuff.... but ignore them... why take heed when you are trying to improve yourself right?
as for comprehension, when we read a book, there might be some words that we don't understand... we can look in the dicts but another way of learning the meanings of the words is by reading the whole sentence or paragraph a few times.... u can guess what the words mean.... |

i jes bought Archies for my niece(thanx fr ur info)...oppss..its nope archies it's Betty @ Veronica..but i jes found out dat i felt in love wth the comics...so instead of giving it to my niece..i've decided to jes lend my niece the comics and start make thm as collection together with my RD. But it's a bit pricey..
the only problem that i should admit about myself is about conversing in english...tho other people that i mingle wth said i was good enuff (compare to them, of coss) but i still not satisfied wth myself.. so, i try to dig and figure out how to improve...environment plays a major role...in our environment, malays always look sarcasticly when others try to converse in english, it is quite disturbing. But to learn english u should hv full courage and dun mingle with narrow minded people dat always try to underestimate u. sum people they dun hv guts to speak but when others do, they try to point out mistakes..hahaha...so, dun bother about those people..
reading-yup i love reading..novel (fond of sheldon& Grisham writings), RD, anything that suggested by other people so that i could improve myself.Dictionary becomes my best fren but STILL got problem to use the correct words at the rite time, i've always lost my memory..i could not recall any..so i jes use the simple words when talking to other people (always regret this!!). any tips Seri or R6???
one more guys, try not to look at the subtitle when u watch english movies...if u can't help it (like i do) better watch dvd...switch to english subtitle no matter it is english movie.hehe

I know what you mean. However, dont pay any attention to these annoying response. If they are truly your friends, they will support you. Continue to do what you can. Find a friend who wants to improve and has the same goal in mind.Change is difficult for some and worrying to others. After all, it is you who will reap the benefits.

On this, the only advise I can provide you is to keep on using English. You are not the only one who mispells or loss of words. I have made countless mistakes and still do them today. Remember we are all humans. Practise makes perfect. Dictionary is a good friend and you are on the right track there.
Your overall goal for now is to understand. As you progress, than you should pursue more difficult aspect of the language.

When you read comics, look at how the characters express their dialogues. You may begin uttering the dialogues and practise them. Look at the context to which the dialogues are used.

They will only think of you like that temporarily. One day, they will look at you differently and some may even ask you for guidance.
