Aku amik rm30K loan... bayar balik 5 tahun. Tapi bukan semua tu utk beli software... Aku dapat quotation hari tu rm9K utk MS Office 2007 ngan Adobe CS3 Design Premium. QuarkXPress ngan 3DS Max aku dah ada yg ori dari tahun lepas. Lain2 tu only akan beli bila perlu. |

How many people with U? or you lone-ranger kinda freelancer? I know it's really hard in multimedia biz to survive with legit software... I have a Production House & my friend & me selalu pening je... Both of us are okay with Open Source, but when we take in practical students drom local Uni... semua mintak Adobe & popular software. Baran gak aku, dah belajar lagi tu bawak2 le belajar new things.
Anyway, for certain things U can't take a shortcut. When we started, asyik jeling je Canon XL1s; we wanted to be 100% digital.... So, at last pegi Singapore & beli kat sana... Lagi murah. At that time only NTV7 is using that!
So, my advise... Start berjinak dgn Open-Source software dari sekarang. Lagi senang nak start bila still tak ramai org kat company. Lots of software to choose from, you might be surprise. Instead of Photoshop, you can try Gimp! Even 3D, you don't really need 3ds Max....
Anyway, check out www.sourceforge.net Lot's of software to choose from. I'm going to go Linux with all our PCs, lagi banyak choices.... Do you know that Lords of the Ring & most major CG movies are made with Linux-GNU solutions?
Good luck dude...
Oh yeah, compression software: http://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/ A very good program, tapi GUI dia tak polished sangat cam WinZip le.... |

Sorry... I live and die with Adobe stuff right next to me.
Bukan apa, most files I get from clients are native file formats to Adobe products (or to certain other software)... and sebab aku dah biasa ngan adobe products, nak buat anything, tuptap on auto-mode dah boleh buat... and being a solo freelancer, speed (apart from good quality work) is the important factor you get a job or otherwise.
Sometimes I have to work at the clients' office on their machines... and waddaya know... they have the likes of the Adobe stuff - couple months back I had to go work on a client's Mac running 3DSmax/Photoshop/Premier due to security reasons - dia takut aku curik/circulate/reuse dia nyer ad idea.
Sorry, personally I feel open-sourced softwares like GIMP et al aint as powerful or intuitive as their commercial opposites. Most things can be done in PS in far less time compared to GIMP. No, it's not cos I'm not accustomed to using GIMP... I WAS using GIMP for a couple years previously.
And Open Office? Maybe I'll use it when they stop integrating it into my desktop, have better save features, better support for non-OpenOffice formats - I've opened a Word 2007 file (converted to pre-2007 version) in OpenOffice and it pretty much screwed up the layout. In my line of work, that's the last thing I wanna see. Thanks but no thanks.
BTW, Blender is good... one of my fav. I use that one too.
And one last thing... most printers/colorseps only take certain file types... Illustrator, InDesign, PageMaker etc... 'Nuff said.
BTW, bebudak practical tu... most of them (walaupun mintak guna Adobe software) still perlu hand-holding to work on those software... 90% tak pernah guna keyboard shortcuts. My favorite Photoshop keyboard shortcut to raise a few eyebrows - CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+S.

Yep, exactly my sentiments... We got so comfortable to the "usuals" & will have 2nd thought about switching. I have ppl who told me that he's not gonna be using freeware, cuz he said no such thing as a free lunch; so free things must be smtg wrong with it or inferior to the "standards". I still turns brows though, when I go to client's office, plug in my thumbdrive & fire up Gimp Portable & do editing there... hahhah
In my case, sure... I have to use Premiere for some editing cuz it comes with the XL1s & all the drivers are tied to it. But, once I moved to Linux it's all on level-field & it's gonna be less headache with hardware upgrades. Windows 2000 Pro was great for vids editing, esp for XL1s; but now it's not supported by Micro$oft so updates etc are out of the windows. WinXP Pro is good, but hangs alot... Vista... Gone already, base installation needs 1GB of memory to run properly; put Premiere on top of it then it'll eat all the memory for lunch.... Forget about running multiple programs & unlimited undo.
Open Office convertion screw-up? Can't really blame them, Micro$oft is really pain in the ass to release their "compatibility codes". Camne nak buat 100% conversion kalau nak kena reversed-engineered everything. Now okay sikit since the anti-trust case kat States....
About the printers, do you send originals to printers? I'll just send eps file for printing, most will accept that as standards.
So, yeah.... ppl call me crazy all the time They'll say "you can't change the world!" I'll just say that "I'm not gonna change the world, I don't expect to... But, my company is my world; tiny, yeah... but I wanna do whatever I feel good for my world." Why? cuz I can... hahahha
Practical students? I've had lots of them, I needs them so I'll have to live with it. One time I had one which said he'll have his degree soon & he's not gonna do basic things like transfering vids, charging batteries etc. I got so pissed, I gave him a wastebasket & tell him to take it outside & put his "degree" in it & pick it up when office hours are over, take it home, frame it or do whatever... Next day, don't bring it here & you start over from ground up. He seems to really taken by it & I guess he learned a lot from it & I think he's better after that. He even told me when his stint is over that he still have the "degree" at his house, but he kept it in his attic. Guess we can really start our little & puny world, huh? |

Why piracy?
I want to give simple explanation. On my prespectives...
1. Kite nak jadikan cina millionaire... 3 piece of DVD pirates for games cost RM45 kat JB
2. Why we should pay for a piece of dvd or two with serial number strip kat blakang kotak for Rm178 (Orange box personal edition)
3. Logic explanation : we are trading with us dollars..
4. Selagi harga duit m'sia x stabil ngan US dollars like USD1.00 = Rm2.00 selagi tuh kita
ngan paras ekonomi dunia ketiga xkan dapat beli semua tuh..
5. Take microsoft for example.. kite penduduk mesia katakanlah 1 juta guna cetak rompak..
nampak macam rugi.. kan? but the facts is.. they dont care.. they still make billions from
their software.. so.. they are getting rich.. we the medium size capital are getting miskin..
then they urge us to use original.. WTF.
6. Finally, we have torrent.. tho i doubt the technology will stand there for another 10 years.. its a take from the rich and give it to the poor concept.
SO? use it.. what for u use original at homes..? as long u aint producing something commercial it never violates the law
*for now*
So thanks to all the rippers.cracker out there.. heh.. Long Live P2P.. dont buy disc download it.. f*** msia telcos for the slowest
internet connection in the whole universe!!
That is only my private prespectives.. better i change my IP now.. theeeheeeheee.. |

artgeex, what software that U paid for 66/mth? Kau buat lawak aaa?
nuckletight, we're not even sure the Chinese are behind it... So long as there's money behind it, all races will be jumping on it to cash in... & We're not just trading with USD, we're following the trend. When I was in the States in late 1990's, a pair of Levi's 501 cost ~USD24; here in Malaysia, 501 can only be found in their boutique & cost a bomb! The exchange rate at the time is only 2.6, so why so much price-hike when in the States I can buy 501 from a pile on a table at general outlets? That's why I never went into Levi's boutique here; I get mine whenever my pilot friends went to LA... Oh yeah, a car like Chevrolet is only USD7k; you deduce the pricing....
& yeah, you can hide your IP but if the gov wants it they will get you! Hahaha. Now, it's 10k fine for downloading pirated copies.... They can just give a holler to TM & TM will be sending your bandwidth usage without a fuss.
Oh yeah, as for the slow speed; Malaysians been had! Surprise! Streamyx is not 100% broadband, it's just a glorified ISDN line.... When they're coming out & my office planning on getting it, a girl behind the counter even had the nerve to tell me that my building got fiber-optic so Streamyx is out of the question as it can't support digital. I just gone bonker "said what??, can you tell me what your superior told you the meaning of ADSL, again??" Poor girl, false info maybe given to her, but to say it to ppl who know will make her looks bad... |

They wont get my ass for suree!!!
yeah agree with that.. i also been and live there for a year there.. i know what you r
talking bout.. no doubt its about trend.. but shi-t .. they are bringin in those software
and others with overcharge price.. but hey still all those big companies in malaysia
is controlled by chinese.. no offence there.. they work, they get money.. yeah..
further than less.. back to topic.. no use using original.. they are sucking out money..
till the price is right.. fo'soh we aint gonna pay any cent to em!..
Streamyx sucks.. all in one pain in the ass
