AKB48 sets records with "Beginner"
Mon, November 1, 2010 (7:47pm EDT)
Oricon has just announced the official weekly sales numbers for AKB48's latest single "Beginner." In its first week, the single sold approximately 827,000 copies, becoming their fifth consecutive number-one.
That total sets a new record for first-week single sales by a female group, surpassing SPEED's "ALL MY TRUE LOVE," which sold 601,000 copies in 1998. Among all female artists (group and solo), "Beginner" ranks #3 in first-week single sales, behind Hikaru Utada's "Addicted To You" (1.068 million) in 1999 and Namie Amuro's "CAN YOU CELEBRATE?" (828,000) in 1997. However, that makes them #1 so far in the 21st century, outselling Utada's "Can You Keep A Secret?" (784,000) in 2001.
"Beginner" is also AKB48's third consecutive single to sell more than half a million copies in the first week. This also sets a record for female artists, as Utada and Ayumi Hamasaki held the previous record with streaks of two consecutive singles.

Mariko Shinoda joins cast of "Taisetsu na Koto wa Subete Kimi ga Oshiete Kureta"
AKB48 member Mariko Shinoda (24) will have a recurring role in Fuji TV's new Monday night drama series, "Taisetsu na Koto wa Subete Kimi ga Oshiete Kureta." This will be her first time acting in a series on that network.
The show, which was revealed last month, stars Erika Toda (22) and Haruma Miura (20) as Natsumi and Shuji, two teachers at the same school who are engaged to each other. However, their seemingly happy relationship becomes threatened when Shuji unwittingly becomes involved with one of his students named Hikari, played by Emi Takei.
Shinoda will play Sayaka, a popular wedding planner who was classmates with Natsumi and Shuji during their university days. Although she once dated Shuji in the past, she now shares an apartment with Natsumi and supports the couple's marriage plans, at least until she realizes that her feelings for Shuji have not entirely disappeared.
"Taisetsu na Koto wa Subete Kimi ga Oshiete Kureta" will premiere in January.

AKB48's "Beginner" PV tops Recochoku charts
Thu, October 28, 2010 (12:37pm EDT)
On Wednesday, AKB48's new single "Beginner" hit store shelves, shattering previous records with a total of more than 568,000 copies sold in the first day. The next day, the song's music video was released on Recochoku, and it had similarly impressive sales. According to Recochoku, its first-day downloads were roughly triple the amount of their previous single, "Heavy Rotation."
The music video, which was directed by Tetsuya Nakashima ("Kokuhaku", "Kamikaze Girls"), depicts the members of AKB48 as characters in a virtual game, though it sparked much controversy due to its potentially disturbing scenes of violence. Although it was shown in its original form at one of AKB48's events, a different version had to be released for television and for the single's bonus DVD.
However, it was decided that the original video would be available on Recochoku for a limited time, and strong interest led to the overwhelming first-day sales numbers. This gives AKB48 their 6th consecutive #1 on Recochoku's daily video clip chart, which extends their existing record for "most consecutive number-ones" on that chart.

AKB48 sets first-day single sales record: 568,000
Wed, October 27, 2010 (11:33am EDT)
It was announced earlier this week that AKB48's new single "Beginner" was shipping more than 1 million copies for its release on Wednesday, and that decision now seems well justified. In its first day in stores, "Beginner" sold more than 568,000 copies. According to The Natsu Style, this is the highest first-day sales figure for a single since Oricon began announcing daily sales data.
In comparison, Arashi's single "Monster" previously set this year's record for opening-week sales at 543,000. "Beginner" has already surpassed that in one day, and is positioned to possibly overtake Arashi's "Troublemaker" as the best-selling single of the year (currently 699,000 copies).
Just two months ago, AKB48 set their own personal record for first-week single sales at 527,000 copies with "Heavy Rotation."

AKB48's "Beginner" ships 1 million copies for release
Mon, October 25, 2010 (8:34pm EDT)
Sports Hochi reports that AKB48's 18th single, "Beginner," will have an initial shipment of 1.03 million copies for its release on October 27. Although not likely, this gives it the opportunity to sell one million copies in its first week, which has not happened since Hikaru Utada's 1999 hit "Addicted To You."
This is a record initial shipment for AKB48. In addition to the group's expanding popularity, "Beginner" has also been attracting a lot of attention because of its controversial music video. Directed by Tetsuya Nakashima ("Kokuhaku", "Kamikaze Girls"), the video had to be edited for television due to its theme of violence. As a result, it was recently decided that the unedited version will only be available through the mobile download service Recochoku.
AKB48's sales have been very strong so far this year. Their last two singles consecutively sold more than half a million copies in the first week, making them only the third female artist to achieve that (the other two are Hikaru Utada and Ayumi Hamasaki).
Early sales indicators are positive. According to the PR office of music store Tower Records, reservations for "Beginner" surpassed AKB48's previous single "Heavy Rotation," even though the reservation period this time was shorter.

AKB48 sub-unit No Sleeves announces new release date for album
AKB48 sub-unit No Sleeves had originally planned on releasing their first album, “No Sleeves“, back in September, but the release was mysteriously delayed, causing fans to speculate on the reasoning behind the decision.  However, fans can now rest easy once more, as the album is now back on track and scheduled for a new release date of January 1st.
The album is coming out in a variety of different versions, with a first print limited DVD and one solo shot jacket version for each member (Kojima Haruna – A, Takahashi Minami – B, and Minegishi Minami – C).  The limited edition version will come with a photo book and trading cards inside.
“No Sleeves” will contain the sub-unit’s singles, “Relax!“, “Tane,” “Kiss no Ryuusei,” and “Lie,” as well as the “Men ☆Doru ~Ikemen Aidol~” television drama songs, “3seconds” and “Christmas Present.”  Both of the drama tracks will be presented as special remix versions.  There will also be No Sleeves performances of the songs “Jyunai no Crescendo” and “Bye Bye Bye” from an AKB48 event, as well as a cover version of AKB’s song, “Heart Kata Virus.”
As each different version of the album release will feature a different member, the tracks will also vary for versions A through C.  Kojima Haruna will solo the song “Cloudy sky” on the type A release, and it will also include the Girls ING track, “Uso desho?“.  Takahashi Minami’s type B album will have a solo version of “Kiseki wa Yoru Umareru“, as well as the sub-unit EYES song, “Next heaven.”  The Minegishi Minami type C release will have a solo version of “Watashi wa Watashi” and sub-unit song, “Shaku ga Hoshii.”  The limited edition DVD version will not have the solo songs from each member, so fans will have to buy each album if they want all the different versions.
