Greater Indonesia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Greater Indonesia or in the Malay language, Indonesia Raya or Melayu Raya was a political concept that sought to bring the so-called Malay race together by uniting the British territories on the Malay Peninsula and Borneo that formed Malaysia with the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia).[1] It was espoused by students and graduates of Sultan Idris Training College for Malay Teachers in the late 1920s, and individuals from Sumatra and Java including Muh, Yamin and Sukarno in the 1950s.[1]
The idea for Greater Indonesia was penned by a history lecturer from Sultan Idris Training College for Malay Teachers by the name of Abdul Hadi Hassan.[citation needed]
The Malay nationalist Kesatuan Melayu Muda group, founded by Ibrahim Hj Yaacob, was one of the more notable entities that embraced the concept as part of its goals.[2] During World War II advocates of Greater Indonesia collaborated with the Japanese against the British and the Dutch.[3] The cooperation was based on the understanding that Japan would unite Dutch East Indies, Malaya and Borneo and grant them independence.[3] It was understood that under a unified Japanese occupation of these areas, the formation of Greater Indonesia was possible.[3]

Maphilindo (for Malaya, the Philippines, and Indonesia) was a proposed nonpolitical confederation of those countries.
The original plan for a united state based on the concept of the Malay race was attempted by Wenceslao Vinzons during the Commonwealth government in the Philippines. There he espoused a United Malay race – his Malaya Irredenta ideal (Malaya Irredenta was another name for Maphilindo). Also, Eduardo L. Martelino- of the famed Jabidah- in his book entitled "Someday, Malaysia" that was published in 1959, also cited the vision of then Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon for an integrated Malay-race nationhood in the region.
In July 1963, President Diosdado Macapagal of the Philippines convened a summit meeting in Manila. Maphilindo was proposed as a realization of Jose Rizal's dream of bringing together the Malay peoples, seen as artificially divided by colonial frontiers.
Maphilindo was described as a regional association that would approach issues of common concern in the spirit of consensus. However, it was also perceived as a tactic on the parts of Jakarta and Manila to delay, or even prevent, the formation of the Federation of Malaysia. Manila had its own claim to Sabah (formerly British North Borneo),[citation needed] and Jakarta protested the formation of Malaysia as a British imperialist plot. The plan failed when Sukarno adopted his plan of konfrontasi with Malaysia. The Konfrontasi, or Confrontation basically aims at preventing Malaysia to attain independence. The idea was inspired onto President Sukarno by the Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI), or literally the Indonesian Communist Party. The party convinced President Sukarno that the Formation of Malaysia is a form of neo-colonization and will later affect tranquility in Indonesia. The subsequent development of ASEAN almost certainly excludes any possibility of the project ever being revived.

| Allow Chin Peng to return, Gerakan
Press Statement by Penang Gerakan Chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan
|
|
Former communist leader Chin Peng should be allowed to return to Malaysia on humanitarian grounds, especially when he is no more a security threat to the country, said Penang Gerakan chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan.
“Communism all over the world including China and Russia has transformed and is moving towards economy-based struggles and extreme communist terrorism practiced in the 50s is non-existent now,” said Dr Teng in a statement.
Echoing the call by Penang-based Citizens International chairman S.M. Mohamed Idris to the government to allow Chin Peng to return to the country, Dr Teng urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to use his good offices to take a re-look at Chin Peng’s case.
Chin Peng, who was born in Sitiawan, Perak, has brothers and sisters, and close relatives who are staying in Butterworth, Perak and all over Malaysia.
“He is now 85years’old and wishes to return to Malaysia, his birthplace. He had even appealed to the High Court to allow him to return but the appeal was rejected.
“The government should fulfill his wishes,” said Dr Teng, adding that Chin Peng’s family would be very happy to see him back.
S. M. Mohamed had told a Press conference yesterday that the struggle waged by the liberation movement led by Chin Peng, Rashid Mydin, Abdullah C.D, Shamsiah Fakeh and others had contributed to the independence of Malaya.
S.M. Mohamed described Chin Peng as a Malaysian patriot who fought the British colonialists from the age of 15 and “sacrificed everything he had to free this country from British control, domination and exploitation.”
Mohamed also said an appeal letter would be sent to Najib.
Chin Peng is currently living in exile in Bangkok. He failed in his last bid to live in Malaysia after the Federal Court on April 30 upheld two lower courts’ decisions compelling him to produce his identification documents before he could enter the country. |
