Consider social business, says Rosmah
KUALA LUMPUR: Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor has proposed that first ladies of Asean countries consider social business in their efforts to address social issues in their countries.

The Prime Minister’s wife said social business was a powerful tool to tackle social problems as it was financially sustainable compared to fund-raising.

Rosmah, who is the president of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers Association (Bakti), said she understood how first ladies of Asean countries devoted a lot of time to raising funds for charity.

“It would be better if we render help by empowering individuals,  organisations and communities to gain more control over their finances instead of depending on donations, charity and government aid for the social cause,” she said. She referred to the success of Bangladeshi’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning micro-finance organisation, Grameen Bank, that changed the lives of the impoverished.

  


Rosmah was delivering her  keynote address at the Forum for Spouses of Asean Heads of State/Government entitled “Empowerment Through Social Business”, an initiative she mooted here yesterday.

The forum was attended by Myanmar President’s wife Khin Khin Win and Thailand’s Prime Minister’s wife Naraporn Chan-O-Cha.

Rosmah said social business gave people the opportunity to participate in the economy and the benefits of its growth were also equitably distributed.

“Let me conclude with the hope that Asean governments will recognise social business as a powerful form of business for addressing social issues and building a strong ecosystem to support it.

“It will be gratifying if social business becomes part of the agenda of future meetings of Asean,” she added.
