KOTA KINABALU: A water crisis has emerged in Matunggong and many other parts of northern Sabah due to the prolonged drought season.
Villagers at Kampung Buranak, Panudahan, Marimbou, Rita, Koniung, Komburongo and Muhang are surving on muddy water.
A desperate and exasperated deputy division chief of PBS Matunggong, Leberi Francis Maraim, was forced to resort to Facebook, to highlight his plight.
In one of his postings, Francis remarked: "This is our only source of water. Hope our plight and suffering will end soon".
In another posting, Francis urged those who had read it and tagged his posts, to help the affected villagers.
Matunggong Assemblyman Dato Jelani Hamdan meanwhile has warned deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan to take immediate action "or else I will bring the media here to highlight the case.
"I am giving him (Pairin) until next week. Keeping silent is definitely not an option,” said Jelani, who won the Matunggong state seat on a PKR ticket but swtiched his alliance to become BN-friendly soon after.
Francis called on the respective elected representatives to help resolve the ongoing water crisis.
“It had not been raining for the past three months and our water taps has not had a drop of water for the past two months.
"The water in the nearby river too has dried up. Now we are barely surviving on the well water which we dug from the riverbed.
"This also is fast depleting. We also have to bath in muddy water from the fish pond,” he lamented.
He also posted a few photos showing the villagers scooping muddy water out of the newly-dug well.
The said post had also drawn great sympathy from those who commented on it, with many of them asking “where are the respective elected representatives?”, besides urging them to immediately come forward to assist their constituents.
Jelani pointed out that he had raised the water issue affecting Matunggong during the last State Legislative Assembly meeting.
He said he was disappointed with Pairin, who is also the State Infrastructure Development Minister, for failing to respond to his inquiry.
“I was dissatisfied with it (answer), hence I called for a press conference on the same day. I will not keep quite and I will follow up on this issue.
"Two weeks ago, I had also gone around Matunggong to assess the situation (of water problem)," he added.

Truckloads of water bring relief to villagers

KOTA KINABALU: Help has arrived for dozens of villagers in Sabah’s northern Matunggong sub-district who have run out of water following a prolonged dry spell there.
Water is being trucked into six villages, where some residents have resorted to digging shallow holes in the ground just to get some muddy water.
The Kudat natural disaster management committee will be providing help to the affected villagers at Kampung Buranak, Panudahan, Marimbou, Rita, Koniung, Kom-burongo and Muhang, said Tanjung Kapor state assemblyman Datuk Teo Chee Kang.
Water tankers began delivering the supply yesterday.
Teo, who is also Special Functions Minister, said if the dry spell continued, as many as 100 villages within Matunggong alone could be hit by water shortage.
Piped water supply is available in the area but villagers are unable to pay the required deposit and connection costs.
Villager Leberi Francis Maraim highlighted the villagers’ plight in a Facebook posting, saying there had been no rain in many parts of Matunggong for the past three months.
Leberi, the Matunggong PBS deputy division chief, said rivers had run dry, forcing villagers to dig wells in the riverbeds.
He said some also resorted to using muddy water from fish ponds for their daily needs.
Matunggong state assemblyman Datuk Jelani Hamdan said there was a need for the state authorities to react more quickly to the water supply shortage in the area.
He said he had raised the matter at the last state assembly sitting and had yet to receive any concrete response.
