Telling tales in Malay

The sales figures, the increasing metres of shelving in large bookstores, the ardent fans ? they all add up to the fact that Malay popular fiction is flourishing, reports DZIREENA MAHADZIR.

YOU know The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown? That persistently best-selling novel that has been on local best-seller lists for more than a year?

Last year, just one Malaysian shop, the Kinokuniya Bookstore in KLCC, sold 10,000 copies of it. That抯 an amazing figure, we are told, because bookshop managers get excited about selling 50 copies of an English language title.

When it comes to Malay titles, however ? Sharifah Abu Salem sold 70,000 copies of her novel, Pesona Rindu (Enchantment of Longing), last year. And she had company: Sepi Tanpa Cinta (Lonely Without Love) by Damya Hanna also sold 70,000.

In fact, in little more than half a decade, just one publisher of Malay novels, Alaf 21, has sold more than half a million copies of seven titles, including Sharifah and Damya抯 books:

Ten years ago, the large bookstores didn抰 carry popular Malay fiction

An expert opinion

Mawar Shafei, Malay Short Stories and Creative Writing lecturer in the School of Malay Language, Literature and Culture Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, expounds on the two main types of novels currently in the market.

THERE are two types of novels that are popular. Firstly, there are those that deal with romance among youngsters or conflicts within a marriage or in a woman抯 life. These are favoured by readers who like the writers

The writers

Fauziah Ashari, Aisya Sofea, Aina Emir, Anis Ayuni, Ramlee Awang Murshid. Veterans Ahadiat Akasha and Khadijah Hashim. These are all names that would be familiar to lovers of modern Malay fiction. We speak to some of these writers to find out what they think about their field, and how they hook those fans.

FAUZIAH Ashari was a part-time writer when she published her first novel (under Alaf 21) in 2001. She now owns her own publishing house, Intens Media. Her current novel, Cinta ? Tiada Akhirnya (Love is Endless), was No.1 at MPH Bookstores last month, is in its fourth print and is also published in Brunei and Singapore.

揑 feel it is important to have different themes from time to time so your readers won抰 be bored. I take into account the fact that readers today have a preference for suspense, and for stories in which religion, social values and love for each other and for God are present.

揑t is like a dark house whose inhabitants long for love. Darkness is suspense, religion/ faith is the pillar of the house, the nooks and crannies represent society, while the furniture are the people.

揥e are inside the house because of love, and we must have faith that the house will not fall, and we have to have patience because there are many obstacles (those nooks and crannies, aka societal rules) and we have to be careful in case we hit the expensive 慺urniture

Just padding & packaging?

I READ your reports on the so-called popularity of Malay novels, which somehow manage to sell from 50,000 to 100,000 copies each (Telling tales in Malay, Reads, StarMag, Feb 26). I have also observed the many titles of such books in local bookstores.

Whenever I see someone looking at such books or buying them, I feel sorry for her.

Perhaps we should study the reasons why this has happened.

These are not novels in the true sense of the word. They have been made to look thick because publishers know that readers will not pay RM20 to RM30 for a thin book. It抯 like the Hindustani movie fan who will feel dissatisfied if he sees a film that is less than two-and-a-half hours long.

How do publishers make these books look thick and fat? They use size 14 fonts, and have wide spacing and thick margins. The books are also small enough to fit into a handbag. No wonder you can see many young Malay girls carrying at least one copy around.

Given their size, it抯 no surprise that these novels are over 300 pages thick. Some even go up to 600 pages. But if you count the number of words on each page, you抣l see that there are sometimes less than a hundred. This is why your writer, Dzireena Mahadzir, was able to read a whole book in record time.

The usual novel has about 50,000 to 80,000 words. But some of these thick and weighty popular Malay novels have even less.

I hope those who like to read Malay novels will demand quality. I am not saying all the popular Malay titles do not have quality, but there is almost no literary quality that we can speak of. Most of them are nothing more than cerpen or short stories that are exceptionally long. Many are also nothing more than personal diaries.

A good novel is definitely not one that we can finish in record time, because it requires constant communication with the reader.

Nobody has ever organised a forum to discuss any of the so-called commercially successful popular Malay novels. If one were held, I抦 sure it would be over in 10 minutes.

I抎 be happy to see a serious and thought-provoking Malay novel sell well. It would be an achievement to be proud of and we can congratulate the writer and publisher for giving us something to buy, read, understand, appreciate, and be affected by in one way or another.

JENAMA BARU ALAF 21 'NOVEL NOSTALGIA'

NOVEL NOSTALGIA - 'BADAI SEMALAM'
MENYELAMI PENGORBANAN SEORANG GADIS

Hidup ibarat satu medan perjuangan.
