Arsene Wenger says Arsenal will spend big in transfer window

Arsene Wenger has promised Arsenal will defy the credit crunch to spend big in the January transfer window.
TheGunners boss has set his sights on Zenit St Petersburg playmaker AndreiArshavin and another central midfielder to boost his squad, as revealedin Mirror Sport last week.
Arshavin's agent Dennis Lachtersaid last night: "We know that Arsene Wenger likes the look ofArshavin. But I like the look of Angelina Jolie and it doesn't alwaysmean you get what you want.
"Arsenal were interested insigning him last summer and they still are, so we will wait and seewhat happens. There has been a lot of interest in him this time as wellfrom England, Spain and Italy." Wenger claims Arsenal have been grippedby the "economic crisis" and warned they will not pay big money fortheir signings in January even though fans are crying out for new faces.

ALMUNIA LOOKING FOR 'REAL ARSENAL'

Manuel Almunia has called on his team-mates to find the "real Arsenal" as the Gunners bid to get their inconsistent Barclays Premier League campaign back on track in the second half of the season.

Arsenal will see in the new year in fourth place in the league, 10 points behind leaders Liverpool, while injuries to the likes of Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas and Tomas Rosicky continue to cast a cloud over the Emirates Stadium.

Yet goalkeeper Almunia believes it is the steely identity which saw Arsenal win so many trophies with the likes of Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry which is still missing.

Almunia said: "We have shown good character, but we still have a little more to go to find the real Arsenal.

"The main thing is to look for our identity, our way, our character that gave this club all their titles and trophies.

"For whatever reason we lost our way, our character and the way we play on the pitch. We need to re-find our spirit and our desire to win games."

Almunia also believes William Gallas is still the real leader of Arsenal despite having been stripped of the captaincy.

With the Frenchman's successor, Fabregas, now sidelined, the armband has passed to Almunia who believes the form of Gallas could be key in the second half of the season.

Almunia insists the inspiration still comes from Gallas and cites the manner in which Arsenal players celebrated Gallas' winning goal against Portsmouth on Sunday as evidence that there are no lingering problems over the defender's autobiography in which he questioned his team-mates' bravery and accused one Arsenal player of disrupting morale.

Almunia said: "William is a very good professional. When he was captain he would fight for the team, in every aspect.

"He is a real winner and has a strong character. But we are on William's side - everyone supports him. I have a very good relationship with him and I was very happy for him to score.

"He has shown that he is an unbelievable professional. He is a player with more trophies than anyone else in the team - everyone has to respect that.

"He knows how to get success. Even though he is not the captain we follow him. I play with so much confidence when William is playing in front of me.

"He has won the World Cup and I have so much respect for him."

Clichy nak komen jugak..
Arsenal's defensive frailties have oft been highlighted this term.
Arsene Wenger remedied the lack of height along the rearguard with the inclusion of Johan Djourou.

A William Gallas and Djourou partnership has been the most effective centre back pairing for the Gunners, yet they still play with a high line, and Gallas and Djourou are not as tight to the other as they should be.

While some believe this to be a tactical flaw in Wenger's set-up, roaming wing back Gael Clichy is instead of the opinion that the onus for change must fall squarely on the player's shoulders, and it is something that they can rectify with added communication on the field.

Communication
"When we conceded late goals, it was not so much that the other teams were better than us, more of a lack of focus and communication," Clichy explained to the club's official website.
"The boss has asked us to talk and communicate more on the pitch, which is what we did against Portsmouth and we got the clean sheet.
"We all played as a unit against Portsmouth, and we have to use this game as an example for the team and if we play like this, with the players we have, we can still do things."
Arsenal's Premier League schedule is broken up now with an upcoming FA Cup tie against Plymouth on January 3.

mesti reserve main vs Plymouth ni...harap menang ler
