Singer/actress Aya Ueto will appear in a new commercial for Lotte's Almond Chocolate Crisp. Ueto will play a woman suffering from "acute oversweetness syndrome" - she passes out whenever she sees a sweet man. The commercial begins airing on March 5.

11,500 extras gathered for HYD2 finale

On Friday, the Nippon Budokan was filled with 11,500 fans as the climax scene of the final "Hana Yori Dango 2" episode was filmed. The popular series has recently overtaken "Karei Naru Ichizoku" as the highest-rated drama this season.

To thank the show's fans, TBS took applications for extras through the Internet. More than 150,000 people applied, including some over the age of sixty. 70% of the applicants were female.

Fans have been requesting for the series to continue, and the cast members commented that they would also like to see it happen. However, no plans have yet been made.

The final episode airs on March 16.

Ai Kago on road to comeback

The current issue of FRIDAY has published an interview with Ai Kago, who was suspended from Morning Musume last February for underage smoking (FRIDAY was also the magazine that caught her smoking). According to the article, Kago has been working in the offices of Up-Front Agency since January 23. The agency, which manages Hello! Project, said that they are preparing for Kago's comeback, though no details have been decided.

Morohoshi stars in first drama in 20 years

Former Hikaru Genji member Kazumi Morohoshi will star in a drama series for the first time in 20 years. The series is titled "Usagi ga Mochitsuki" and will be broadcast on satellite network BS-i on Saturdays at 11:30pm, starting on April 28. Morohoshi plays the president of a struggling advertising firm who also suffers from an inability to feel love.

Amami-Hirai collaboration tops enka download chart

Ken Hirai's enka composition "Onna no Wakaremichi" has unexpectedly found its way to the top of the charts.



Hirai composed the song for Yuki Amami's character in the ongoing drama series "Enka no Joou." The tune was first made available on mobile download service Chaku-Uta on January 24. After the song's chorus was performed on the show for the first time on February 17, the song rose to #2 on Chaku-Uta's enka charts. By the March 3 broadcast, the song acquired the #1 spot, where it has remained for six consecutive days, outperforming established enka artists such as Saburo Kitajima and Ichiro Toba.

So far, 15,000 copies have been downloaded, an impressive number for a song that has only appeared in a drama series. The complete song will be made available on Chaku-Uta Full on March 17, the date of the drama's final episode. As a bonus, the first 1,000 downloads will be free.

Takako Matsu celebrates 10 years with self-duet

Singer/actress Takako Matsu is celebrating the 10th anniversary of her debut single, "A#a, Haru ga Kitara," with a renewal of the song. The song's writer, Yuji Sakamoto, has written additional lyrics, and the song will be recorded with both Matsu's old voice and her current voice. The new version, titled "A#a, Haru ga Kitara 97-07," will be released online on March 21.

Matsu will have a busy schedule for the rest of 2007. She appears in the upcoming "Tokyo Tower" movie (April 14) and will release her 8th album on April 25. Then in May, she will go on her first concert tour in four years. Matsu will also appear in the "HERO" movie scheduled for September.

'Death Note' ships 1 million

The "Death Note" movie set went on sale on March 14 in Japan. The set includes both "Death Note" films, a bonus DVD, a music CD, and a special booklet.

In anticipation of high demand, a total of 500,000 units shipped for the initial release, which translates into 1 million copies of the movies. This initial shipment is the largest so far of all domestic films released in 2006.

Matsushima on top again in Oricon style survey

Oricon Style recently published a survey asking women, "Whose makeup and hairstyle would you want to copy?" A total of 800 women were surveyed, 200 from each of the major age brackets (10s, 20s, 30s, 40s). For the second year in a row, actress/model Nanako Matsushima ranked #1. She was followed in order by Ryoko Shinohara, Yuri Ebihara, Hitomi Kuroki, Kumi Koda, Mika Nakashima, Ayumi Hamasaki, Misaki Ito, Namie Amuro, and Yukie Nakama.

Among women ages 10-19, Nakashima ranked first. Women in their 20s preferred Ebihara, while Matsushima and Kuroki were favored among the 30s and 40s, respectively.

SMAP shows their muscles for Pocari Sweat

Johnny's idol group SMAP will be appearing in a new series of commercials for sports drink Pocari Sweat. Each of the commercials will feature a SMAP member in some form of physical activity. The first two will show Goro Inagaki climbing 15 steep sand hills and Shingo Katori traveling 9 meters across trapeze rings. Both commercials begin airing on the 17th. The remaining ads are currently in production.
