Trained langur monkeys will patrol Commonwealth Games venues
Trained monkeys guard athletes at Commonwealth Games
The highly intelligent primates have been patrolling stadiums and accommodation blocks to scare off other wildlife including wild monkeys, dogs and even snakes.
Handlers from miles around the Indian capital have been drafted in to patrol the athletes’ village as the final preparations are made for the games.
Some teams threatened to boycott the competition after complaining that the accommodation was inhabitable and overrun with animals.
One shocked South African competitor even discovered a deadly cobra snake in his room.
Heavy monsoon rains have caused flooding near the Games Village causing many snakes to seek refuge.
Commonwealth Games organisers have also been particularly concerned by the arrival of packs of wild monkeys which have been creating a nuisance around the venues by stealing food and attacking humans.
Langur monkeys are noted for their intelligence but also their aggression and are highly effective in deterring other animals from taking up residence.
The Commonwealth Games are due to get under way at the weekend and will be officially opened by the Prince of Wales. |

Delhi's Lieutenant Governor backs Kalmadi's Olympic dream
New Delhi: Giving thumbs-up to Suresh Kalmadi's far-fetched dream of bringing the Olympics to India, Delhi's first citizen Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna on Thursday said the facilities for the Commonwealth Games were world-class and at par with Olympics standard.
The Lieutenant Governor, who received the Queen's Baton at a function at the Organising Committee's office, echoed Kalmadi and said India was now prepared to bid for the biggest sporting extravaganza on the planet.
"The Games Village that we have is the finest ever and is ready to host Olympics or any other multi-discipline world class meet... I am not only saying this... Many foreign delegates during their visit were so impressed with our facility that they have told me that we should bid for
Olympics now," Khanna said.
Talking about the controversies leading up to the Games, he said, "I am not looking into the superficial aspects that have been highlighted in the past. Having seeing the facilities myself, I am giving a thumbs-up to the Commonwealth Games," he said.
Khanna, along with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit, received the Queen's Baton from Dronacharya awardee Satpal Singh at the function.
Welcoming the Baton, Dixit said, "Happy Commonwealth Games, happy days ahead."
Earlier, speaking at the Global Sports Summit, under-fire OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi said, "The biggest legacy (of CWG) is Olympics. Cricket is the most popular sport in our country but it is played by just 10 countries. Olympics has all sports. We have to ensure that Olympics comes up.
This is our opportunity and CWG will help."
As a matter of fact, India intends to bid for the 2020 Games but the Indian Olympic Association and the Sports Ministry have been at loggerheads on the issue.
The Sports Ministry has said it's not aware about India's bid for the Olympic Games and no such effort can go ahead without the government's nod. |

Delhi welcomes athletes to fortified capital

NEW DELHI, Oct 1 — As the countdown to the Commonwealth Games moved into its final three days, athletes continued to flood into a heavily guarded Indian capital as the host of problems surrounding the event showed signs of easing.
More than 4,000 athletes have arrived in Delhi to find a city wrapped in a security blanket and a Games needing a last-minute government intervention to rescue the multi-sports gathering and prevent a huge embarrassment for India.
A visit to the venue by International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge today will provide a much-needed boost for organisers reeling from the logistical nightmare of trying to arrange India’s answer to the Beijing Olympics.
Shoddy construction and filthy toilets at the Games Village delayed the arrivals of several teams but the last-ditch efforts to improve the situation appears to be paying off.
“I reached here only last night but accommodation is as was expected and I’m looking forward to enjoying the next couple of weeks here,” Australia’s world champion pole vaulter Steve Hooker told reporters at the Games Village yesterday.
To ensure the safety of the athletes, the Indian capital has been converted into a fortress with 100,000 security personnel, including commandos, snipers and police, virtually taking over the city.
MiG fighters and armed helicopters would be on standby for the October 3-14 Games and Mi-35 attack helicopters would be airborne during opening and closing ceremonies, according to media reports.
Mobile surface-to-air missiles and anti-aircraft guns have also been deployed.
The US$6 billion (RM18.6 billion) exercise was intended to display India’s growing economic and political clout, rivalling neighbour China, which put on a spectacular 2008 Beijing Olympics.
But an attack on tourists by suspected militants, a dengue fever epidemic, filthy apartments in the athletes’ village, and the collapse of a footbridge injuring 27 workers has forced India on the defensive.
Organisers also had to deal with a number of high-profile withdrawals including triple Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt of Jamaican and Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice.
Much to the organisers’ embarrassment, a snake was found in an athlete’s room while and an Indian boxer’s bed collapsed in the Games Village.
Outside the complex, homeless people who sleep on pavements have disappeared and beggars have been banished from the main streets of New Delhi.
The government has also promised to investigate reports of corruption in the awarding of lucrative contracts for the Games. |
