Geremi the inspiration behind Magpies' revival
GEREMI has emerged as one of Newcastle's key players during their current four-match unbeaten run, but manager Kevin Keegan has admitted he questioned whether the Cameroon international would have a Magpies future at all just two months ago.
Geremi was unable to make an instant impression when Keegan was appointed as Sam Allardyce's successor in mid-January, as he was in Ghana representing his country at the African Cup of Nations.
He left England on the back of a tortuous two months in which he had ceded the captain's armband to Alan Smith, found himself linked to rumours of dressing-room unrest that ultimately hastened Allardyce's departure, and been unable to halt a losing run that saw Newcastle tumble down the Premier League table.
He could have been forgiven for retreating into his shell when he eventually returned to English shores, and even Keegan feared for Geremi's future having learned of the 29-year-old's struggles in his first six months as a Magpies player.
Those fears have proved unfounded, though, with Geremi's return to the starting line-up in last month's 1-1 draw at Birmingham coinciding with the start of an unbeaten run that has taken Newcastle 12 points clear of the Premier League's bottom three, maintaining the African's record of having appeared in all Newcastle's victories this season.
Geremi will hope to add to his list of successes when he starts Saturday's tricky away game at Portsmouth, and Keegan has underlined the former Middlesbrough and Chelsea midfielder's importance to his side.
"When I first came into the club, I wondered if he might not have been able to hold down a place," said the Newcastle boss. "The feeling I got was that he'd had a tough time.
"But from the moment he came back from the African Cup of Nations and trained with us, I thought, 'Wow'.
"Players respect him. He's a clever player and he doesn't give the ball away. He's one of my leaders around the place and he always has a smile on his face. He's a fantastic person to have around the club."
Keegan gave his players Monday and Tuesday off in the wake of Saturday's comprehensive 3-0 win over Reading, but the Newcastle boss was back on the training ground yesterday as his squad stepped up their preparations for Saturday's trip to Fratton Park.
Steven Taylor was among those training at Longbenton, and having shaken off the bout of food poisoning that kept him out of last weekend's win over the Royals, the England Under-21 international is hoping to return to the starting line-up in two days time.
David Edgar proved an able deputy against Reading, but with the in-form Jermain Defoe ready to return to the Portsmouth side after missing Tuesday night's 1-0 win over West Ham because of a family funeral, Taylor's experience will earn him an instant recall to Newcastle starting XI.
"I don't know why I got food poisoning as I did not eat anything I don't usually have before a match," said Taylor. "I should be fine for this weekend." |

Shay Given is unlikely to play again this season, according to Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper is recovering well from a groin operation, but Keegan will err on the side of caution whatever happens.
"I think he'll be fit by the end of the season, and he'll train with us for maybe the last week or 10 days, but there's no sense for him to play a match," he said.
"He just needs to know by the end of the season that he's fit, ready to go away and come back fit for pre-season with all his problems behind him. I think that, for him, will be a massive relief."
United's next two games are against Sunderland and West Ham - two clubs with significance for the Republic of Ireland international.
Given had a loan spell with Sunderland, and it was a 2006 challenge with West Ham's Marlon Harewood that left him with a perforated bowel - a condition which has contributed to his groin problems.
Meanwhile, Steve Harper continues to perform well as his understudy, and Given will likely face stiff competition for his place when he returns to action. |
