'Diffuser three' survive initial protest
Toyota, Williams and Brawn GP have all survived a protest from rival teams regarding the legalty of their 2009 cars.

The three outfits faced an uncertain few hours after rival outfits Ferrari, Red Bull, Renault and BMW lodged formal protests with the Australian race stewards regarding their design of their rear diffusers - a key aerodynamic component that governs the airflow beneath a car.

It wasn't long, though, before only three protests stood as the race stewards threw out BMW's as a result of a technicality.

But with Ferrari's, Red Bull's and Renault's still standing the stewards took over six hours to discuss the matter and deliberate with the FIA finally confirming that the cars had been passed legal and would be allowed to race.

But, given that this is F1, it looks likely that the three teams that lodged the protests will appeal the stewards' decision.

Should this happen the matter will go before the FIA's International Court of Appeal, which means both the Australian and next weekend's Malaysia GP results will not be confirmed until days or even a week after Sepang.

For now, though, Toyota are relishing having won the first round of the diffuser battle.

Toyota Motorsport Chairman Tadashi Yamashina said: "We are pleased with the decision of the race stewards but we prefer not to comment further on the situation.

"This weekend promises to be a tremendously exciting Australian Grand Prix so we are now looking forward to starting the competition on track with the first practice sessions on Friday."

Rosberg fastest on Friday in Australia
Nico Rosberg has completed a positive start to his 2009 championship byfinishing on top of both Friday practice sessions in Melbourne. TheGerman driver lapped the Albert Park circuit with a fastest time of1.26.053, which is quicker than the fastest Friday time of last year.
Rosberg, having topped the first session with team-mate Nakajima, finished a tenth of a second ahead of the new Brawn GP car of RubensBarrichello as Jarno Trulli's Toyota was a further two tenths back. Theteam-mates of the trio completed the top seven with Mark Webber's RedBull acting as the meat in the sandwich, with a satisfactory fourthplace. As Button's fifth position confirmed that both Brawn cars werein the top five, Sebastien Vettel finished a frustrating day in eighthplace following a hydraulics problem in first practice and a spin inthe second; the German put half of his car onto the grass as he passedButton at Turn 3, travelling backwards before stalling the RB5. AdrianSutil was an impressive ninth for Force India but complained of an'undriveable' car during the session, to which hisengineer stressed the varied characteristics of this year's cars.

Thesession also yielded some surprising results towards the rear end ofthe classification, notably the quickest Ferrari of Felipe Massa beingin tenth position with and the two McLarens down in 17th and 18th.Massa demonstrated his usual agressive driving style, with one of themost dramatic moments of second practice coming in the last half houras the Brazilian experienced a lurid slide at Turn 14 whilst strugglingwith the 'super soft' Bridgestone tyres; correcting twice as the carmoved from side to side, momentarily shocking Michael Schumacher on thepit wall in the process, Felipe managed to keep the Ferrari F60 out ofthe concrete wall.
R鋓kk鰊en ended his day in 11th spot as he, at one point, ran wide atTurn 1 just a few moments after team-mate Felipe Massa had done so.Fernando Alonso's Renault was in 12th position with Fisichella in thesecond Force India rounding off a good day for the team in 13th. TheBMW cars both appeared to struggle for grid on the exit of corners withHeidfeld and Kubica 14th and 15th respectively.

Bourdais was thefirst of the final five, ahead of the two McLarens as Hamiltonreported his car to be constantly bottoming out which resulted invisibility being impared. Piquet's Renault was 19th with Buemi, theonly rookie in the field this year, two seconds off the pace in 20thposition.
