Stuttgart slap 50 million euro price tag on Gomez
Written by: AFP
Stuttgart磗 striker Mario Gomez (L) vies with Werder Bremen磗 Per Mertesacker during a match in Stuttgart, March 2008. Gomez now has a 50 million euros (78 million US dollars) price tag as VfB Stuttgart bosses show their determination to keep their hot-shot who is set to star at Euro 2008.
BERLIN (AFP) - Germany striker Mario Gomez now has a 50 million euros (78 million US dollars) price tag as VfB Stuttgart bosses show their determination to keep their hot-shot who is set to star at Euro 2008.
The 22-year-old is under contract until June 2012, but both Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid have expressed an interest and the defending Bundesliga champions want to keep their goal-machine for as long as possible.
It would be a new Bundesliga record if either Spanish side pays such a high fee for Gomez and the 50 million figure is more than triple his 16 million market value at the start of the season.
"One cannot insure the market value of Mario, we feel he is worth about 50 million euros," said Stuttgart's director of sport Jochen Schneider.
Gomez, who will miss the next two weeks with a thigh injury, has bagged 15 goals in 20 league games even though Stuttgart have laboured this season with erratic form.
With six goals for Germany in just nine appearances, Gomez is set to partner Bayern Munich striker Miroslav Klose up front in the national side for June's Euro 2008 tournament.
"If I were Real's coach, I would want to sign him. But his favourite Spanish team is Barcelona - and Real are the arch-enemy," VfB coach Armin Veh told German magazine Sport Bild.
"The plan is that Mario wil stay with us for another years, that time is extremely important for his development."
Stuttgart captain Fernando Meira says there is little chance of Gomez remaining at the club for too much longer.
"It makes everyone proud at the club that we have such a good player as Mario in the side," Meira told local paper the Stuttgarter Nachrichten.
"Sooner or later, Mario will join a big club, probably Real Madrid or Barcelona."
Gomez has said he wants to spend another season at Stuttgart, but admitted he is tempted by the prospect of life in Spain's La Liga.
"I would like to play abroad in the future and Barcelona is my dream team," said Gomez, whose father is Spanish.
"But at the moment, I have no plans to go and even if a top team comes in for me there is no guarantee I will leave."
Gomez will have to sit out this weekend's Bundesliga game against title rivals Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen the following week, having been blighted by injury last season, the striker is impatient.
"It cannot be changed. I want to be fit again as soon as possible, but I have to be patient and wait," said Gomez, after tearing his thigh muscle against Hanover last weekend. |

02/04/2008 19:34 Uefa Cup Preview: Bayern M黱chen - GetafeWhat: UEFA Cup Quarter Final First Leg
Who: Bayern M黱chen (1st, Bundesliga) vs Getafe (11th, Primera Divisi侒n)
When: Thursday 3 April 2008, 20:45 CET
Where: Allianz-Arena, M黱chen
Referee: Howard Webb (England)
Bayern are the bookies' favourites, but in order to even reach the semis, yet alone the showcase final in Manchester, they'll first have to overcome one of the dark horses.
(Ba)yearning For Silverware
After spending big in summer, it's not quite been a season of plain sailing for the Bavarian giants, yet they find themselves in good stead as we enter April.
A disappointing 1-1 draw with N黵nberg at the weekend may not be the best preparation for a big European night, but their overall domestic standing - seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga - sees them in relatively high spirits.
What's more, they're yet to lose at home in the Bundesliga this season. In fact their only reversal at the Allianz-Arena came at the hands of Anderlecht in the last round of the UEFA Cup, and even then the 2-1 loss mattered little when the first leg in Brussels ended 5-0 to the Germans.
Thus the home support will be likely to treat this encounter as 'business as usual', with nothing less than a convincing win expected as part of a greater stride towards silverware - something that they only managed to gain by virtue of the relatively inconsequential German League Cup last season.
With recent injury woes clearing up, boss Ottmar Hitzfeld will be eager to field a strong side in order to avoid suffering an early setback.
But while the likes of Ribery and Toni should be pressed into service as Bayern seek to kill the game off quickly, Hitzfeld will note that Geta haven't lost an away game in Europe since the First Round.
Getafe
Getafe, meanwhile, haven't lifted a trophy of note in their short history, but have nonetheless won plenty of admirers in recent seasons.
The club from the southern suburbs of Madrid rose to the Liga for the first time back in 2004, but have scarcely looked back since then. Finishing 13th in their first campaign, they subsequently enjoyed successive top-half placings, not to mention a trip to the Bernabeu for the Copa del Rey final last season.
Although that encounter ended in heartbreak against Sevilla, the Azulones had still earned themselves a ticket to Europe, and it is here that they still find themselves after a rollercoaster debut season in the UEFA Cup.
After weathering a late scare against Twente in an eventful First Round clash, Getafe - still floundering around the dropzone domestically - shocked English giants Tottenham Hotspur in the first Group Stage match. Eventually they were to top their pool, with Spurs close behind and Anderlecht in third.
Then AEK Athens were swiftly killed off before the biggest test of the season arrived: Benfica. Undeterred, the minnows went to Lisbon with big ideas and, thanks to an early sending-off for the hosts, dominated the encounter, winning 2-1. The crestfallen Portuguese fell 1-0 in the second leg, and Geta marched on.
A draw against tournament favourites Bayern could prove overwhelming for the Coliseum Alfonso Perez men, but the wide-eyed minnows act is fooling nobody anymore. Getafe, led by ambitious president Angel Torres, mean business, and Bayern will not treat their visitors with haughty disdain.
Sporting a healthy mixture of young players eager to impress and journeyman pros eager for a final shot at the big time, Michael Laudrup's Getafe XI will not make it easy for their hosts, not by any means.

TEAM NEWS
Bayern
Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski are both fit and ready, with one likely to partner Luca Toni, while Martin Demichelis, who missed the draw at N黵nberg, is also ready to play.
Mark van Bommel, who is one game off a suspension, is doubtful with flu, while Willy Sagnol is out medium-term with a neck injury. Altintop remains sidelined.
Should coach Hitzfeld decide on rotation, the likes of van Buyten, Ottl and young Toni Kroos are available for selection.
Possible Starting XI: Kahn; Lell, Van Buyten/Lucio, De Michelis, Lahm; Schweinsteiger, Ze Roberto, Ottl, Rib閞y; Toni, Klose/Podolski.
Getafe
The Getafe contingent have arrived in Bavaria as of Wednesday afternoon, but coach Laudrup has yet to announce a squad list.
Pablo Hernandez and David Belenguer are both nearing fitness, potentially strengthening the right wing and central defence respectively. However, influential centre-back Daniel 'Cata' Diaz is all but certain to miss out again.
Left-back Lucas Licht is suspended. Cosmin Contra is to serve a two-match ban in Spain, but this does not affect European competition.
No fewer than five players are one yellow card off suspensions of their own. These comprise goalkeeper Roberto 'Pato' Abbondanzieri, versatile captain Mario Cotelo, midfielders Esteban Granero and Javier Casquero, and forward Juan Albin.
Boss Michael Laudrup often rotates his side for the UEFA Cup. We could see the likes of Oscar Ustari in goal, while Mario Alvarez and Braulio, used sparingly in La Liga, may take part.
Possible Starting XI: Ustari/Pato; Contra, Belenguer, Tena, Mario Cotelo/Signorino; Hernandez, De La Red, Granero/Casquero, Gavilan; Braulio/Albin, Uche.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Bayern - Luca Toni: An obvious choice, but a pertinent one. Toni and his teammates will know that the Coliseum is not an easy place to go, so carving out a first leg lead is vital. Enter the Italian ace, who is the competition's joint-top goalscorer with seven goals. Regardless of who partners him, he may be called upon to break the deadlock.
Getafe - David Belenguer: If Getafe's success is borne of a mixture of youth and experience, then he embodies the latter. One of the old heads of the side alongside Pato, Contra and Mario Cotelo, 35-year-old Belenguer has done the rounds of the Spanish lower leagues, but also scaled the top-level heights with Real Betis. The former Real Madrid youth could prove decisive in calming the young midfield and attempting to keep a clean sheet. Without Cata Diaz at his side, though, it could be tough.
PREDICTION
Getafe will no doubt look to hit on the break, but Bayern have too much firepower - and too much strength at the back - to be easily caught out. 2-0 will please the Germans, but it will also give Los Azulones a bit of hope as they look ahead to the second leg in a week's time.
Bayern Munich 2 - 0 Getafe

Favourites Bayern step up treble bid
Treble-chasing Bayern Munich will have UEFA Cup talisman Lukas Podolski back fit and in form for their quarter-final first leg at home to dangerous Getafe this evening.
Bayern, four-times European champions and winners of the UEFA Cup in 1996, are the tournament heavyweights but the Bundesliga leaders are not alone in terms of quality and ambition.
The other ties will see fellow Germans Bayer Leverkusen, the 1988 UEFA Cup winners, take on Zenit St Petersburg, while Rangers host Sporting and Fiorentina are at home to PSV, who won the cup in 1978.
Podolski has played his best football of the season in the UEFA Cup, scoring five goals as Bayern have cruised through to the last eight.
He had been doubtful early in the week with an ankle injury but Bayern passed him fit late on Tuesday and he should be in confident mood after scoring his first Bundesliga goal of the season in the weekend's 1-1 draw against Nuremberg.
Bayern, who are also looking forward to a German Cup final, obviously have a superior pedigree to Getafe but a look back at recent history will give the Bavarians reason for caution.
Getafe are trying to repeat the heroics of Alaves, another modest Spanish team who reached the final of the UEFA Cup on their debut in European competition.
The unheralded Basque side disposed of two German opponents Hertha Berlin and Kaiserslautern on their way to the final in 2001, where they suffered a heart-breaking golden goal defeat at the hands of Liverpool.
Getafe, coached by Michael Laudrup, have already claimed victories against high-profile sides such as Tottenham Hotspur, Benfica and AEK Athens and they are already looking forward to a King's Cup final against Valencia.
Not yet clear of the threat of relegation, Getafe cannot afford to relax in the league after a 2-0 defeat at home to Osasuna and Laudrup is concerned by the demands put on his small squad.
"We wanted to get some points against Osasuna so that we could face up to this period in more relaxed mood, but it wasn't to be," Laudrup said.
"The good thing though is that we won't need to motivate anyone for the Bayern match."
If Bayern win the tie they could set up an all-German semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen, provided they come through against Zenit St Petersburg.
"We would rather have played the first leg away," Bayer coach Michael Skibbe told reporters.
Looking at the other half of the draw, Fiorentina will have to recover from a 3-1 at rivals Udinese on Sunday. Top scorer Adrian Mutu was suspended but should be back for the Eindhoven game.
Midfielder Riccardo Montolivo played on Sunday despite having tonsillitis and is now a slight doubt for Thursday. Both Montolivo and defender Tomas Ujfalusi will miss the second leg if booked.
The winners of that tie will face Sporting, the beaten finalists in 2005, or Rangers. |

Getafe have been the surprise package in this season抯 Uefa Cup in what is their first ever European campaign knocking out AEK Athens and Benfica on the way to this quarter final clash with tournament favourites Bayern Munich.
Belenguer has warned Bayern that the Azulones are coming to Germany intent on attacking and are confident of an away goal and even a win. Getafe have scored away from home in every round of the Uefa Cup this season.

Haggui: Leverkusen Can Win UEFA CupBayer Leverkusen defender Karim Haggui has only modest aims for year's Bundesliga, but when it comes to the UEFA Cup he's convinced his side can go and win it.It is 20 years since Bayer 04 last lifted the UEFA trophy but Tunisian international Haggui feels this side are more than capable of repeating the feat.
Having won their all-German duel with Hamburg in the last round, the side from North Rhein Westphalia now prepare to take on Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg at home in the quarter-finals.
In It To Win It
"There's something special about playing European games and competing against some of the best clubs," Haggui told uefa.com ahead of tonight's encounter. "We've played some lovely football already and we're all extremely motivated for the Zenit match.
"Beating sides like FC Z黵ich, Galatasaray and Hamburg breeds confidence and we are starting to feel that we have an opportunity to do something special this season. Our objective in the league is to finish in the top five at least, but the UEFA Cup is a competition we can win."
League And Cup
Things are less bright for Leverkusen domestically, having lost their last two league games away to Bayern Munich and at home to Frankfurt. But Michael Skibbe's side are still fourth and Haggui remains adamant that the mood in the Bayer camp is positive ahead of tonight's match.
"We've had a positive campaign so far and the atmosphere in the team is still good despite the recent results," the 24-year-old explained. "In any case, losing in the league has nothing to do with Thursday night. The context is totally different. This is an international competition.
"We can make history for the club, and it's up to us to perform. If we keep a clean sheet on Thursday we have a great chance because we're a team that's always likely to score away from home |
