Ayat Ayat Cinta playing in Singapore cinemas this week!

From: The Electric Newpaper Singapore

A love DIVINE

Blockbuster Indonesian Islamic love story to hit local cinemas

By Sheela Narayanan

May 07, 2008

IT has been called Indonesia's Titanic.

Not because it was expected to sink, but because it is turning out to be as big a hit as the 1997 film starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as lovers on board the doomed ocean liner.

Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love) has become the world's most populous Muslim nation's biggest blockbuster.

It has had 3.5 million people flocking to the cinemas to watch it and even reduced Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to tears.

The central theme is that of Islam as a compassionate and peaceful religion, woven in with a romantic plotline.

The producers, the father and son team from MD Entertainment, Manoj and Dhamoo Punjabi, who are Hindus themselves, told The New Paper that the film has also appealed to non-Muslim Indonesians.

'Islam is the background but the story is essentially a love story and that (the theme) is universal,' said Mr Manoj.

The producers and their good-looking cast - Fedi Nuril, Rianti Cartwright and Carissa Puteri - were in town last weekend to promote the film.

It will open at Cathay cinemas in Downtown East and Causeway Point on Thursday and at Cathay Cineleisure on Friday. The film, made on a budget of US$1.5 million ($2 m), is based on a best-selling novel of the same name by Indonesian writer Habiburrahman ElShirazy.

It tackles sensitive issues like Islam's treatment of women, polygamy and inter-faith marriage in the story of Fahri Abdullah Shiddiq, an Indonesian student at Egypt's Al-Azhar University.

Fahri is a handsome and devout young man who has four very different women in love with him.

He eventually marries Aisha, a rich German-Turkish student played by Rianti.

This breaks the hearts of the three other women - two are headscarf-wearing Muslims and the third is his Coptic Christian neighbour named Maria, who is played by Carissa.

Suddenly, Fahri's life gets turned upside down when he is falsely accused of rape by one of the spurned women and faces death by hanging.

The only person who can prove his innocence is Maria, who has fallen into a lovesick coma after Fahri's marriage to Aisha.

Desperate to save her husband, Aisha persuades Fahri to take Maria as his second wife and declare his love for her.

When Fahri reluctantly agrees, Maria miraculously gets better and gets him acquitted.

The film's depiction of Islam received high praise from Mr Yudhoyono, who told reporters after watching it: 'I wiped away my tears several times. It's a touching movie...'

It has been touted as the answer to a controversiol movie by Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders, released on the Internet last month, which argues that the Quran can be used to incite violence.

Lead actor Fedi, 26, said the film helps define Islam as what it should be - a religion of peace and tolerance.

'Islam has lost its identity in all the noise about terrorism and jihad.

'These fictional characters can help inspire Indonesians to be better Muslims,' he said.

Carissa, 24, said that it looks at polygamy - a controversiol issue in Indonesia - from a different perspective.

However she would not agree to being in a polygamous relationship.

'I am personally against it because I believe that only God can be fair,' she said.

The film's success has created some problems for the cast.

Fedi's convincing portrayal of the devout Fahri left women in Indonesia so enamoured that a flood of marriage proposals has come his way.

'Mothers have asked me to marry their daughters and some women have even told me that they are willing to be my third or fourth wife.

'It was just crazy,' said Fedi, who is single.

And Fedi, who is also a guitarist for Indonesian rock band Garasi, has attracted a whole new set of fans at his band's performances.

'Usually it would be rock and metal guys. Now I see a bunch of 'tudung girls' standing in the corner,' he said with a laugh.

He also felt pressured to be as openly devout about Islam as his on-screen character.

'For me, my faith is a very private thing. It is between God and me. After this film, people expected me to very religious,' he said.

His co-star Rianti - an MTV VJ who hosts several of the music channel's Indonesian shows - had a different problem.

'I am no diva like (singer) Kris Dayanti. I am known among teenagers and people who watch MTV. But the media attention on me after the film was surprising,' she said.

Indonesian newspapers reported in March that the 24-year-old actress was about to be deported because she didn't have the proper papers to work in Jakarta.

Rianti, who is of English-Indonesian parentage, has British citizenship.

The bubbly young woman told The New Paper that the reports of deportation were grossly exaggerated.

'I just had to sort out some minor paperwork and when I went to the immigration office with my lawyers, I saw hundreds of cameras and reporters waiting outside.

'My car couldn't even get to the entrance as they blocked it and I had to take a cab to escape them,' she said.

Carissa, who is of German-Dutch-Indonesian heritage, suffered a little less than her co-stars.

'Every time I go shopping in the malls, people just call me Maria - my character's name.

'And a fan in Singapore just gave me a present - a purple box with a card saying he is my biggest fan.'

Handling the increased attention, however, was easy compared with what they had to endure to shoot the movie, they said.

While the story in the book was based in Cairo, Egypt, the film was shot on location in Semarang, Indonesia, with the desert scenes filmed in Rajasthan, India.

The Indian leg of the shoot was difficult as the cast and crew had to travel 33 hours from Mumbai to Jodhpur in a bus to get to their location.

Fedi and Rianti also had to ride a camel in a scene where they had to look like a newly married couple on their honeymoon.

Said Rianti: 'We may have been smiling in the scene but we were miserable. I even fell off the camel because I had to sit side-saddle.'

Fedi added that that scene was a very painful one for him.

'I can tell the men out there, if you want to have children in the future, do not ride a camel,' he said.
