sometimes 30-35 minutes dah boleh sampai queenstreet...

tapi dah jarang naik bas...sekarang naik teksi jerr...tak boleh nak buang2 masa sangat sekarang ni...

JOHOR: PELAWAT S'PURA SELAMAT
Langkah polis bendung jenayah sudah dipertingkat

PELAWAT Singapura di Johor diberi keyakinan bahawa keselamatan mereka lebih terjaga berikutan langkah polis mempertingkat langkah membendung jenayah di negeri itu, khususnya yang disasarkan terhadap pelancong.

Pegawai Turus Bahagian Siasastan Khas merangkap Ketua Bahagian Jenayah Serius Johor, Superintenden Polis Abdul Manaf Abdul Razak, berkata mulai tahun ini rondaan polis beruniform telah dipertingkat di kawasan-kawasan yang biasa dikunjungi pelancong, seperti Danga Bay dan pusat bandar.

Alat-alat sistem televisyen litar tertutup (CCTV) juga dipasang di beberapa kawasan pelancong, antaranya di Jalan Wong Ah Fook, kata beliau semasa bertemu wartawan selepas dialog antara Jawatankuasa Pelancongan dan Sekitaran Johor dengan ejen-ejen pelancongan Singapura, semalam.

Dialog itu menyusuli acara Pemasaran Pelancongan anjuran Majlis Tindakan Pelancongan Johor di Hotel Peninsula Excelsior untuk menjual produk-produk pelancongan di Johor kepada ejen-ejen Singapura.

Sejak kebelakangan ini, banyak laporan mendedahkan pelawat Singapura di Johor menjadi sasaran penjenayah, seperti kenderaan mereka dicuri, dirompak atau rumah dipecah masuk.

Bagi kes kenderaan dicuri, sebanyak 150 kereta Singapura dilaporkan hilang di seluruh Johor tahun lalu, tetapi jumlah itu berkurangan antara 20 hingga 30 kereta jika dibandingkan dengan 2004, kata Superintenden Abdul Manaf.

Angka bagi kecurian motosikal Singapura juga berkurangan, ujar beliau.

'Persepsi yang diberikan (mengenai pelawat Singapura menjadi sasaran penjenayah di Johor) adalah tidak tepat.

'Malah, kadar jenayah di Johor Bahru sejak tahun lalu telah berkurangan dan tidak be nar bahawa ada jenayah yang disasarkan kepada pelawat Singapura.

'Cuma mereka, seperti orang lain, harus elakkan daripada berada di tempat terpencil lewat malam atau keluar bersendirian.

'Mengenai kes kecurian kereta, ia dilakukan sindiket berangkai,' kata Superintenden Abdul Manaf.

But it'll now be called 'scenic bridge'

THE 'crooked bridge' is back in the news.

  

A sketch of how the 'scenic bridge' will connect to Singapore's half of the Causeway is shown on the front page of New Straits Times today. On the right, you can see a barge with a towering crane. A source tells the newspaper that work will begin after Chinese New Year.  
The New Straits Times (NST) reported today that Malaysia will start building the bridge across its half of the Johor Strait next week.

However, the bridge that it plans to build will be referred to as the 'scenic bridge' and not as the 'crooked bridge' as it is now called.

The paper said that according to highly-placed sources, the Malaysian government had decided not to wait for Singapore's decision on the bridge.

The delay, it said, was costing Johor a lot in terms of potential growth.

Work on the bridge is said to begin immediately after the Chinese New Year holidays.

The newspaper published a photograph on its front page showing a crane barge in the middle of the Johor Strait, which it said belonged to the consortium heading the bridge project.

The sources told the paper that the plan for now was to build the elevated crossing within Malaysia's territorial waters in the Johor Strait without demolishing the Causeway.

'We will make a decision on the Causeway later. What is important is to build the 'scenic bridge' as quickly as possible,' the source told NST.

He added that the bridge was targeted for completion by 2008.

The construction time-frame assumes importance given that the Malaysian government plans to turn southern Johor into a 'mega hub' by 2008.

While waiting for the bridge to be completed, a temporary access road will be built to divert all Causeway traffic to the CIQ.

This is not the first time that the Malaysian media has reported that Malaysia is going ahead with the construction of the bridge.

On 4 Sep last year, the New Sunday Times, quoting unnamed sources, reported that Malaysia had decided to go ahead with its construction despite not getting Singapore's agreement.

Reacting to that report, Singapore's Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo told Parliament later in a reply to a question: 'Although there have been news reports in the Malaysian media suggesting that Malaysia has decided to go ahead with the construction of a bridge to replace the Causeway, I would like to clarify to this House that discussions on the bridge are still ongoing and we should not pre-judge the outcome.'

The formal proposal to replace the Causeway with a new bridge was made by Malaysia at a meeting between Singaporean Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on 13 Dec 2004.

This was for a straight bridge, as opposed to a previous plan for a 'crooked' half-bridge structure.

The two leaders agreed then that talks would be guided by two principles: Any proposal must have a 'balance' of benefits for both sides and not disadvantage either, and outstanding bilateral issues must not hold back cooperation in other areas.

Malaysia has big plans for southern Johor.

On Tuesday, Johor Menteri Besar Abdul Ghani Othman told the media that under the 'mega hub' would be an integrated corridor with exciting new infrastructure and buildings.

The government is planning to spend as much as RM2 billion ($860 million) to develop infrastructure on 1,970 sq km of land.

HE couldn't wait to read Tuesday's report in The New Paper about errant Singapore footballer Agu Casmir.

He missed the report because he was in Selangor that day.

But when popular local soccer personality and Tampines Rovers' youth team manager R Vengadasalam, 46, turned up at TNP's office last night, he discovered that he himself would be the subject of a report in today's edition.

7.45PM: VENGA ARRIVES AT TNP

He was at TNP's office in Toa Payoh at 7.45pm. Coincidentally, a reader had called us about him earlier last night.

The caller claimed Singapore customs officers found two pornographic VCDs in his car at Woodlands Checkpoint when he arrived there after driving straight from Selangor.

Mr Vengadasalam had been in Selangor on Tuesday night supporting his S-League club team Tampines Rovers against Selangor in an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup game.

Mr Vengadasalam, better known as Venga, was known as a colourful and loud personality in the local soccer fraternity when he was with Woodlands Wellington.

But in 2004, he left Woodlands to join Tampines for a low-profile position as director of operations.

Last night, he was taken aback when told of the call.

But he did not hesitate or try to avoid eye contact.

'Yes, it's true,' he admitted.

At 3.15am early yesterday morning, he and three Tampines fans reached Woodlands Checkpoint after driving back from Selangor's Bukit Jalil Stadium.

Mr Vengadasalam claimed that after Woodlands Checkpoint customs officers discovered the VCDs, he was questioned till about 4.45am, warned and then allowed to proceed.

When contacted, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) declined to comment as the police were investigating. The VCDs were found in a red plastic bag when the glove compartment was opened.

Mr Vengadasalam claimed: 'I believe someone sabotaged me or left the VCDs there.

'I often have friends, staff or players sitting in my car.

'Sometimes, I even lend my car to relatives and staff.'

8.15PM: ANXIOUS PHONE CALLS

By 8pm, back in our office, Mr Vengadasalam grew uncomfortable about the possible publicity.

'Look, why would anyone put such things in an obvious place like the glove compartment?' he asked.

He made a series of phone calls to trace people who had sat in his car before he left on the Malaysia trip.

Finally, he mentioned a name - 'Chiko'.

Silence followed before he hung up and explained that the VCDs belonged to Chiko, an employee of V2 - an Indian pub Mr Vengadasalam owns in Lucky Plaza.

He then called his security head to drive Chiko over to the TNP office.

In the meantime, TNP called Tampines fan Zainal Abidin, who was one of Mr Vengadasalam's passengers yesterday morning.

Mr Zainal said they left Singapore at 3pm on Tuesday and drove to Shah Alam, where the Tampines team was staying.

He said: 'By 8.30pm, we had to be at the Bukit Jalil Stadium to catch the start of the game.

'When everything was over by 11pm, Venga drove us straight back to Singapore because he wanted to catch the live telecast of the Barcelona-Chelsea game (shown at 3.30am yesterday morning).'

9PM: EMPLOYEE ARRIVES AT TNP

At about 9pm, Chiko arrived at TNP's office. TNP asked for his full name, but he insisted on being called only Chiko.

He was calm. 'I had dinner with Venga and few other staff members two weeks ago,' he claimed, 'and I left the VCDs there (in Mr Vengadasalam's glove compartment) after buying them from a (stall) set up by someone at Lucky Plaza.

'I forgot to take them with me.'

Mr Vengadasalam said: 'I didn't check my glove compartment as it's full of stuff and Tamil music CDs.'

Chiko said he works as a bouncer at Mr Vengadasalam's pub.

He refused to have his picture taken, but said he would make a police report admitting he had left the VCDs in Mr Vengadasalam's car.

At one point, Mr Vengadasalam was seen shaking his head. This prompted Chiko to tap his shoulder and say: 'Sorry Venga, I didn't mean to get you into trouble.'

For the next hour, Mr Vengadasalam seemed more disturbed by the revelation. 'I didn't want to court controversy when I went to Tampines. Now, this happens.

'It's bad luck.'

11PM: HE MAKES POLICE REPORT

After reaching the Jurong Police Division Headquarters at 11pm, Mr Vengadasalam calmed down and became reflective as he walked towards the entrance.

He said: 'The more I think about it, the more I realise this experience should serve as a warning to Singaporeans. Always check your car before you leave Singapore and before you return.

'You never know if someone may have left or put in something illegal you didn't know about. Especially if you, like me, have many friends. You know, I'm lucky it wasn't drugs.'

As Chiko followed him into the police station, TNP asked Chiko if he himself had a similar experience before.

He said bluntly: 'Yes, in 2000, I was caught for selling pirated VCDs here. Three months' imprisonment.

'Venga didn't know me then. I joined his pub about five months ago.'

When told what Chiko had revealed, Mr Vengadasalam said: 'I knew, but I wanted to give him a second chance in life.'

By 12.10am - after one hour - Chiko finally had his statement recorded by the police.

Criminal lawyer Amolat Singh told TNP that a person who wants to admit a crime is allowed to make a police report for declaration purpose.

Mr Vengadasalam then drove home a drained man, for once not looking forward to reading about himself in the papers.
