Priyanka-John pair gels well

Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham are pairing well in movies, as they have been old gals. They worked together in modeling before entering into films. John says Priyanka is a completely professional artist. She never says no as far as the work is concerned. This pair has fared very well in the recent movie 'Karam', where John says a lot to Priyanka in his sign language. Presumably they have a secret understanding between them!

AMITABH UPSET ON CUTS IN HIS ROLE

Khiladi Akshay Kumar is doing multi-starrer films these days. He goes well with Bobby Deol, Ajay and Suniel Shetty. He is stated to be afraid of working with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan though because the latter do not allow him to steal the show. The latest news is that the Big B is upset with Akshay Kumar who has reportedly got some of Amitabh's scenes and dialogues cut from the film 'Waqt'.

In spite of Amitabh Bachchan's objection to these avoidable cuts, the movie's director Vipul Shah is keeping quiet. This is presumably because of Akshay's influence over the director. Is it because Akshay Kumar feels insecure from Amitabh Bachchan? This is no secret that Akshay has a lot of influence over filmmakers in the Ramsay, Darshan Bhandu and Nadiadwala camp. That is why Akshay akshay Kumar doesn't get movies under big banner.

This is to recall that Yash Chopra never repeated Akshay after his 'Dil Toh Pagal Hai'. Similarly, showman Subhash Ghai never signed him in his production after 'Aitraaz'. Ghai preferred Vivek Oberoi in his next. However, Akshay Kumar takes full care of Ajay Devgan though in 'Sipahi' Akshay got Ajay Devgan's role scissored because this film belonged to Akshay's favorite director Ramsay.

Since 'Khakee' belonged to Ajay Devgan's favourite director Raj Kumar Santoshi, Akshay failed to play his game in this movie. We may add that Suniel Shetty has been a victim of Akshay's tactics in 'Dhadkan', 'Awara Pagaal Deewana' and 'Aan'. But Suniel doesn't mind it and says that one's role has to be appreciated even if that is brief. However, Akshay has denied this charge by saying that he cannot influence the directors. This is a reflection on the directors' images. It is to be seen if Akshay will be able to be withstand Amitabh Bachchan's objection.

Preity ignores Karan's request

Nikhil Advani has quit Dharma Production though he began his career as an assistant with this banner owned by Karan Johar. Nikhil learnt a lot from Karan and practiced them in 'Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai' and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum'. Later, Nikhil directed "Kal Ho Na Ho' and earned laurels in the industry. However, Karan gave his next to another assistant, ignoring Nikhil's desire to direct it too. So, Nikhil said goodbye to his mentor. The behavior of Nikhil upset Karan so much that he asked his friends not to join hands with Nikhil. Preity Zinta, however, proved an exception and agreed to do Nikhil Advani's next.

Big B for corporate culture

The super star of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan, has been made Ambassador of Unicef. This is a prestigious appointment for him as well as for the film industry. He is considered to be the Indian 'Robert De Neero' for he has acted in more than 150 movies. At present, Big B is in New York in connection with his 12-day celebration of his movies there. Besides, some of his important movies during his 35-year old career will be screened at the Lincoln center. Speaking about Indo-US business cooperation, he said that with the opening up of the Indian economy, India would soon increase her film trade as well. He pleaded with Indian producers to emulate their Hollywood counterparts in acquiring corporate culture. He, therefore, urged for cooperation between Bollywood and Hollywood.

SRK in new avatar of a 'don'

In 1978 there was a super hit movie titled 'Don' starring Amitabh Bachchan. And now after 27 years, filmmaker Farhan Akhtar is all set to give another 'Don' to the moviegoers. Yes, Farhan Akhtar is making a new movie 'Don' for which he has signed his favorite Shah Rukh Khan. This is to be recall that the story of 1978's 'Don' was written by Farhan's father Javed Akhtar and Saleem.

URMILA TURNS A BHOOT (GHOST) AGAIN

I-Dream Productions, which is famous for making hat ke (different) movies, is making its next titled 'Naina'. The story of the movie moves around supernatural powers and horror. Sripal Morakhiya is directing it and Aashish Bhatnagar of I-Dreams is producing it. The director claims that it is an entertainer besides being a horror one. The movie is being made with a special camera technique that can show horror (ghost like) scenes very effectively. There is another significant feature of the movie as it shows the an underground railway station exploding in the sky and the blaze putting a gas station on fire.

These scenes have being picuturized on Rangeela girl Urmila who had acted in Ram Gopal Varma's last horror movie 'Bhoot'. There is also an amazing shoot in the movie. This pertains to Urmila being picturized in 27 ft deep water. These scenes have been enacted for the first time in Bollywood. The cast includes Anuj Sahni, Sweta Konnur, Amardeep Jha, Kamani Khanna and Sulabha besides Urmila in a lead role. This is the story of a young girl who struggles for her survival. Being a supernatural and horror movie, it doesn't have regular music. However, Salim- Suleman has given music in the background.

Salman's 'Marigold' shooting stopped

The shooting of Salman Khan's Hollywood movie 'Marigold' that continued for two days in Sanjay Gandhi Park in Mumbai was suddenly stopped on Wednesday. The authorities claimed that the permission for the shooting was not obtained from the concerned authorities. The shooting was disrupted when scenes on Salman Khan and Gulshan Grover were being picturized. The movie has yesteryears' dancer Helen, besides these two stars, in it.

John to repeat in Yash's 'Salaam'

The myth of a rift between Yashraj Films and John Abraham soon after their successful ' Dhoom' has been blasted. This is evident, as John will be repeated in Yashraj banner's 'Salaam-Namastay'. Siddarth Anand of the 'Hum Tum' fame will direct this movie. Besides, he has assisted Kunal Kohli in the past. The movie has chotey Nawab Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta in the lead roles.

Actress Priyanka Chopra who is the most popular one in Bollywood these days attributes the success of her career to the bangle she bought from Nainital, a hill station. Govinda is late as ever

Govinda has not changed though he has changed his status from an actor to an actor-turned-politician. But the habits die-hard. This was witnessed by his guests who waited for two long hours to wish their host. The occasion was the launch party of Govinda's own production 'Sukh'. Among others from the industry at the function were Chunky Pandey, Kamini Khanna, Kirti Kumar and Priti Jhingiani.

Why Mahima is praising Warsi?

Mahima Chaudhry is too excited with her recently released 'Kuchh Meetha Ho Jaaye' starring Arshad Warsi. She is all praise for Arshad Warsi. She says that her character of Gulabo in this movie is very strong, and she has found working with Arshad excellent, as he is a good human being besides being a good actor. Arshad makes the whole team laugh and laugh during and after the shoot, she adds. This is noteworthy as Mahima has never admired any one so much as she has done for Warsi though she has worked with almost all top stars of the industry. Has she developed a soft corner for Warsi?

IS ABHISHEK MARRYING NANDITA MAHTANI?

This is well known that Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor had been engaged in the past and were looking towards their marriage when it suddenly broke down. This happened because Karisma's mother Babita is reported to have inquired into Abhishek's financial status. The breakdown upset both Karisma and Abhishek besides their families. Karisma was quick to get married with a businessman of Delhi named Sanjay Kapur though the latter was a divorcee. Abhishek is yet to marry though many names have been mentioned in the media.

However, it is not known when and with whom. The recent reports indicate that Abhishek has not only improved his career and financial status, but is being noticed with Nandita Mahtani, a fashion designer, during her show in New Delhi. This is to recall that Nandita Mahtani is the former wife of Karisma's husband Sanjay Kapur. The industry is anxiously watching the growing relationship between Abhishek and Nandita. Moreover, Nandita was earlier known to be close to Dino Morea. Things seem to have changed now. However, the million-dollar question is if the Bachchan family will agree to their son getting married with his former girlfriend's husband's former wife?

Tabu and Milind to feature in eternal love story.

The strenuous efforts of director Ashok Kaul will at last see the light of the day. The experimental flick 'Bhagmati - The Queen Of Fortunes' starring Tabu, Milind Soman and veteran actress Hema Malini in a vital role have been in the making for a long time now. The film is ready to hit the screens and the audio of the film was launched recently.

The innovative and the striking aspect of the film is the merge of live and animated character based on the fairy tale love saga of the prince of Hyderabad and Bhagmati. This two hour and 40 minutes flick focuses on the 400-year old romantic story of Qutub Ali Shah and princess Bhagmati.

Slated to be released by the end of this month, the film has been produced by Zee TV and has more than half of its reel hours in animated form.

ANIL KAPOOR LAUNCHES A RACING CAR IN DELHI

Bollywood actor, Anil Kapoor's passion for motor racing can not be missed as he holds the position of the executive director of A1 Motor Racing India. He launched a motor racing car in Delhi on Sunday in collaboration with South African businessman Atul Gupta of Sahara Computers. The car launch was also attended by Bollywood star Aamir Khan who had come to congratulate Anil on starting the new venture.Even though Anil has started this big venture which involves too much of responsibility but he would not give up his acting career for his new love. Anil, while sharing his feelings for this new concept, proposed a vote of thanks to Aamir for making the launch more lively. His passion reveals that he wants to put India on the map as far as motor racing goes.  

BOBBY: I AM NOT TYPECAST IN ANY IMAGE

Bobby Deol has been quite different from his father Dharmendra and his elder brother Sunny inasmuch as his image in the film industry is concerned. He is not typecast even after acting in a number of movies though he has very few hits to his credit. He is waiting for the release of his forthcoming 'Barsaat'.

You were the second choice for 'Barssat' as you got it after Akshay quit it. Would you comment?

I knew that Akshay was offered 'Barsaat' first. Even a song had already been picturized. Sunil Darshan had clarified this to me. Besides, I talked to Akshay Kumar before accepting 'Barsaat'. Such things do happen in the film industry.

What's your role in it?

I am sandwiched between two girls. This is not the usual love story. This is a completely family movie, and looks at the relationship with a different angle.

How do you find your journey from the earlier to the present 'Barsaat'?

My journey hasn't been to my liking. I want something but some other thing happens. Still, such a journey has its own charm. We learn by doing films, and then conclude that we should haven't done some films.

Can you name a film that you regret doing?

We regret doing a film only after doing it and not faring well at the box office. Anyway, I don't like doing a postmortem of my films. I don't like blaming others for it though.

Did 'Jurm' disappoint you?

Yes, it disappointed me as didn't succeed though we worked very hard for it.

Isn't it that the viewers like you playing a romantic character?

No, we cannot say this. Sometimes viewers like our film and at another time they reject it in spite of similarity of roles. I follow my seniors in this respect. Call a film good if it succeeds, and consider it bad if it fails. Anyway, I am not typecast in any image.

Sonali gives birth to son

Model-turned-actress Sonali Bendre who was married not in the distant past to film producer Goldie Behl, has given birth to a male child in Mumbai on Thursday, Aug 11th.. Sources close to her family say that the child weighs three kg, and the mother and the son are all right.

Karisma asked to settle with husband

The Delhi High Court has asked the quarreling couple of actress Karisma Kapoor and the businessman Sanjay Kapoor to settle their dispute amicably outside the court before the next date fixed for August 24, for the sake of the child. Besides, the court has asked all concerned parties to submit their replies to it by August 19.The dispute is about Karisma getting a passport made for her and her four-month old daughter without information of her husband. At the previous hearing, the court had passed an interim order restraining her from going abroad with the child without her husband's consent. Meanwhile, Karisma's father Randhir Kapoor has told the media that he would be happy if the matter is amicably settled between the husband and wife. This is to recall that Karisma's parents -Randhir Kapoor and her mother Babita -- have been living separately from each other for the last several years.

Amitabh to play Gabbar in Ramu's 'Sholay'

Ram Gopal Verma will soon fulfill the long cherished ambition of Big B to play the character of Gabbar Singh in Ramesh Sippy's famous film 'Sholay' that was screened some thirty years ago. In Shippy's 'Sholay', late Amzad Khan had excellently played the role of Gabbar Singh. And, Amzad had become the super actor by performing this character whose dialogues were written by Salim Zaved. This is to recall that Big B had then played the key character of Jay in Sippy's 'Sholay' along with Dharmendra and Hema Malini. The latter had become synonymous with her character Basanti of 'Sholay'. Since Ramu is remaking 'Sholay' now though with a slight change, he has offered the Gabbar's role to Amitabh, and Jay's to Mohit Ahlawat, the director's new favorite. Ramu's decision has excited Amitabh Bachchan, who is anxiously looking forward to play the Gabbar's coveted role.

RANI, GOVINDA A LET DOWN IN PYAR DEEWANA...

Govinda and Rani Mukherjee, once considered a sizzling combination, have failed to even register their presence on the box-office with their latest film Pyaar Deewana Hota Hai. Their presence is no longer remnant of the fact that ill very recently it was alleged that they were seeing each other. While earlier this had added to their box-office status, it is no longer so.

In Pyaar Deewana Hota Hai, Govinda tries hard to stay away from his comic image. Instead, he makes an attempt to present himself as a versatile actor. The film has taken quite a long time to come to the theatres. It was completed nearly two years ago and many times its release date was postponed for one reason or another. In recent interviews, both Rani Mukherjee and Govinda were not very eager to talk about this film.

In Pyaar Deewana Hota Hai, Govinda plays a lover boy who will do any thing to woo his ladylove Rani Mukherjee. He meets her in true Bollywood style. He presents himself as a dumb guy in front of her and succeeds immediately in getting her attention. Attention progresses to sympathy and sympathy grows into love....

The story sounds good but the picturisation attempts made by director Kirti Kumar (who is incidentally Govinda's brother also) fall short of expectation. Kirti in the past has given films like Hatya and Radha Ka Sangam, both with Govinda, but has hardly any technical brilliance with him as a filmmaker. In Pyaar Deewana Hota Hai, he has tried to break Govinda's comedy image and has presented him in a lover boy image. But, this lover boy image too has fallen short of perfection.

Also, the audience feels that Govinda's character is not written with full devotion. There are many flaws in his characterization. On one hand, he is supposed to be true to his ladylove and on the other hand he does not mind conning people and using unethical means to get his work done anyhow. Kirti Kumar's direction is like any other newcomer's but even newcomers in Bollywood come more prepared these days. The film has little freshness to offer and most of the sequences and plot points are repetitive.

On his part, Govinda has tried his level best to make the film entertaining. He has also utilized his comic image in parts.

For, Rani Mukherjee the film is another feel bad film. She has been out of the focus for some many months. In fact, this has disappointed her fans who were more eager to watch her film Chori Chori, scheduled to release next week. The only saving grace of the film is its music. Late Anand Bakshi has given some good lyrics and Uttam Singh has come out with some mellifluous tunes for them. Though, he may not have been able to give any instant hit numbers for this film, but overall the music is hummable. Jatin-Lalit and Aadesh Shrivastav have done moderately good work but no film can find success on its music alone. On the whole, Pyaar Deewana Hota Hai is a loser that stands to entail heavy losses to its distributors and exhibitors.

A film that can be avoided in such scorching heat!
