NEWCASTLE UNITED V MANCHESTER UNITED
Ferguson to bring back the big guns
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will bring back several key players for Wednesday night's Premier League clash at Newcastle United following his side's Carling Cup victory on Sunday.
A much changed United team claimed their second trophy of the season with a 4-1 penalty shootout success over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley but with their focus back on Premier League matters the big guns will return.
Wayne Rooney has recovered from a virus and Dimitar Berbatov, Edwin van der Sar, Michael Carrick, Park Ji-Sung and Darren Fletcher, none of whom were involved in the action at Wembley, should return to freshen up the squad.
Also in the United line-up will be Nemanja Vidic, with his manager admitting he had made an error in putting him on the bench for the Carling Cup final and handing Rio Ferdinand a start instead.
"The only mistake I made on Sunday was with Vidic," revealed Ferguson. "I didn't realise he had played three games in the competition.
"But I needed Ferdinand back into rhythm because he missed too many games from December onwards.
"Having got that really good game under his belt we hope Ferdinand and Vidic will be a really solid partnership to the end of the season."
Ferguson's only injury doubt is defender John O'Shea, although the Republic of Ireland international is hopeful of shrugging off a heel injury.
Meanwhile, relegation threatened Newcastle will be without midfielder Nicky Butt for the clash with his former club after the 34-year-old damaged his knee in Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers. Geremi or Alan Smith are set to deputise.
Kevin Nolan will serve the second leg of a three-match ban, while Damien Duff (calf), Michael Owen (ankle ligaments), Habib Beye (ankle), Danny Guthrie (hamstring), Joey Barton and Xisco (both fractured metatarsal) are still out. |

Fergie: It wasn't a great performance
Sir Alex Ferguson had mixed feelings after Manchester United won 2-1 at Newcastle to extend their lead to seven points.
United had gone a goal down just 10 minutes into the game after Peter Lovenkrands scored for the home side.
However, goals from Wayne Rooney, his fifth in five games against the Magpies, and Dimitar Berbatov either side of half-time sealed the win.
Ferguson's side has now stretched their run of consecutive victories in the league to 11.
"It wasn't a great performance," Ferguson told Sky Sports.
"We got off to a terrible start and Newcastle were pumped up for it. But we expected that and we should have dealt with them better.
"But coming back from 1-0 down to win a game is a good result for us. It required a lot of grit at times. Our football has been better, we were a bit careless with the ball, but to come back from 1-0 behind is pleasing.
The Scot added: "Newcastle know this is a massive game for them, they're a big football club, and they went about their job in the right way. They put in good crosses from both sides of the pitch.
"They got a bit of fortune with the goal, Edwin van der Sar makes a mess of it, and they had a couple of chance after that. (Obafemi) Martins hit one by the post and they had one cross deflected just wide. It was a hairy spell for us."
Ferguson is confident United can handle the pressure heading into the business end of the season, believing his players have been in this situation enough times to know what to expect.
"We have had this for years. It makes no difference to us whether we play first or second, we rely on and trust the players to show their patience and experience," he said.
"We've been through this time and time again and it's not new. Coming to Newcastle is not an easy place and we have got a good victory.
"I think tonight we faced a different type of challenge. Newcastle were aggressive and putting in tackles everywhere. You have to give them credit, but we have withstood it and managed to get a result."
