Badminton/All England Championships: Complacent Kien Keat-Boon Heong pay heavy price again

Frustrated doubles coach Rexy Mainaky.

THEIR tendency to take it easy against "unknowns" cost men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong dearly again as they crashed out in the first round of the All England on Wednesday but the stark difference this time was coach Rexy Mainaky's reaction.

Criticism and even his resignation have not worked on the pair and Rexy has now taken a different approach - he is leaving it to Kien Keat-Boon Heong to decide what they want from their careers.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong fell 21-18, 21-19 to Japan's Shuichi Sakamoto-Shintaro Ikeda, the same pair who beat them in the World Championships quarter-finals in Kuala Lumpur last year.

Rexy, in a telephone interview from Birmingham yesterday, said Koo admitted to him after the match that he was over-confident and lost his composure when the Japanese pair started playing well.

"Kien Keat-Boon Heong used to always be in a winning position and everything looked sweet but now they are going through the bitterness. They need to come out of this and it is entirely in their own hands now to do so," said Rexy.
"Kien Keat-Boon Heong have lost to them (Japanese pair) before and they know by now how to counter them. They must learn to be independent and willing to enhance their knowledge on how to keep a winning edge over their opponents.

"Coaches can only do so much for players but the players must also have the initiative. I hope that Kien Keat-Boon Heong can learn from this and bounce back in the Swiss Open next week."

In Kuala Lumpur, BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Nadzmi Salleh denied there is a rift between the coach and the players, saying that the inconsistency in their performance is mainly because they lack analytical ability.

Nadzmi said Malaysia are second to none when it comes to training and preparing for a particular tournament but generally the players are weak in terms of strategy and analysing the strengths and weaknesses of opponents.

"We are not happy with what has happened in the All England and this has once again demonstrated our players weaknesses when it comes to strategy and analysis," said Nadzmi.

"I will have to talk to Rexy and Kien Keat-Boon Heong on this aspect and see how they can improve.

"This has happened before the Beijing Olympics and it gives us time to rectify the errors."

Ominously, Kien Keat-Boon Heong play Poland's Robert Mateusiak-Michal Logosz in the first round of the Swiss Open and unless they change their attitude of under-estimating the unknowns, another first round exit cannot be discounted

Badminton/All England Championships: Tan Fook-Wan Wah, Chong Wei bring cheer

Victorious Japan pair Shuichi Sakamoto (back) and Shintaro Ikeda.

WORLD No 2 Lee Chong Wei and veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah brought some cheer to the Malaysian camp when they stormed into the quarter-finals of the All England at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham yesterday.

Chong Wei defeated Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia, the son of former world champion Icuk Sugiarto, 21-18, 21-11 in 32 minutes.

Chong Wei will meet either Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia or Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam, who played in a late match last night in the last eight, today.

Tan Fook-Wan Wah's 21-8, 21-16 win over Americans Howard Bach-Bob Malaythong in the second round was heartwarming after four other pairs, including defending champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, had crashed out in the first round on Wednesday.

Tan Fook-Wan Wah, runners-up in 2004 and 2006, will play Indonesia's Luluk Hadiyanto-Alven Yulianto in the quarter-finals today.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong were shocked 21-18, 21-19 by Japan's Shuichi Sakamoto-Shintaro Ikeda while Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari's campaign also came to an early end when they were beaten 21-18, 21-18 by Mathias Boe-Carsten Morgensen of Denmark.

Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock were humbled by Bach-Malaythong with a 21-18, 16-21, 21-16 win.

It was also the end of the road for Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui who lost 21-19, 20-22, 21-11 to Hong Kong's Albertus Susanto-Johan Hadi Kusuma.

Wong Choong Hann and Hafiz Hashim, who are involved in a head-to-head battle for a place in the Olympics, dished out shoddy performances and were eliminated in the first round.

Choong Hann was handed a 21-12, 21-14 defeat by Poland's Przmyslaw Wacha in 33 minutes while Hafiz had no chance against third seed Bao Chunlai of China who cruised to a 21-19, 21-11 win, also in 33 minutes.

In the men's singles, Wong Mew Choo was involved in a tough second round match against Jiang Yanjiao of China in a late match last night.

In the women's doubles, Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui advanced to the second round after beating Swedish pair Elin Bergblom-Johanna Persson 21-11, 21-16.

They took on top seeds Zhang Yawen-Wei Yili of China last night.

Mixed doubles pair Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei also crashed out in the first round when they lost 13-21, 21-17, 21-18 to Anthony Clark-Donna Kellogg of England

Kien Keat-Boon Heong tiada strategi betul - Jalani

Oleh RADIAH SAORI
[email protected]

KEKALAHAN beregu No. 1 negara, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong pada pusingan pertama Kejohanan Badminton Seluruh England benar-benar mengejutkan banyak pihak.

Coach Rexy has got used to Kien Keat-Boon Heong losing matches

PETALING JAYA: Doubles coach Rexy Mainaky has gotten used to national number one Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong being the losers.

He neither gave Kien Keat-Boon Heong a tongue-lashing nor broke into an emotional outburst against them after their shock first-round defeat in the All-England in Birmingham on Wednesday.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong defence of the men's doubles title ended with a 18-21, 19-21 defeat by their bogeymen, Shuichi Sakamoto-Shintaro Ikeda of Japan. And Rexy took it all in his stride.

The Japanese, currently ranked 14 the in the world, also sent the Malaysians packing in the third round of the World Championships last year.

It was the second big disappointment for Kien Keat-Boon Heong this year after their failure to retain the crown in the Malaysian Open in January.

揔oo and Tan kept on winning last year and I got used to that. Now, they keep on losing and I have gotten used to it too,

Badminton: Chong Wei keeps it going

By RAJES PAUL

PETALING JAYA: National number one Lee Chong Wei continued to keep the Malaysian challenge alive in the All-England men's singles in Birmingham yesterday following the exit on the previous day of all his compatriots in the first round.

Chong Wei moved into the quarter-finals with a 21-18, 21-11 win in 32 minutes over Tommy Sugriato, the son of Indonesian legend Icuk. In the first round on Wednesday, he tamed KLRC Bhd's Sairul Amar Ayob 21-16, 21-14.

Chong Wei, who is determined to reach his first-ever All-England final, will take on the winner of the match between Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia and Vietnamese Nguyen Tien Minh for a place in the semi-finals.
