'No indication it was shot down'
There were no indications the Russian passenger plane was shot down, Egyptian security sources said.
Egypt’s North Sinai is home to a two-year-old Islamist insurgency and militants affiliated to Islamic State have killed hundreds of soldiers and police.
There are no details yet on what has caused the crash, however. |

'Most on board likely to have died'
The passenger plane that crashed in Egypt’s Sinai on Saturday was completely destroyed and most of those on board are likely to have died, an Egyptian security officer who had recently arrived at the scene told Reuters.
The plane went down in a mountainous area in central Sinai and poor weather conditions have made it difficult for rescue crews to get to the scene, the officer said.
Survivors and bodies of those on board will be flown to Cairo, the security source said. |

OMG mh17 akak dpt news masa keluar supper, bulan puasa kan time tu, terus tak lalu nak makan sis.
...
Masa 370 drama gila sis, nak pi kerja pun ketar kepala lutut. Percubaan nak minta mc gagal sebab dah dihidu dek doctor. So mengagahkan diri la juga. Masuk crc tgk crew lain nangis berjemaah.. ayooo.. terus kecut perut. |

The BBC's Orla Guerin in Cairo says is it likely there will be speculation about militant involvement in the incident - Sinai has an active militant network, with local Jihadis who have allied themselves to so-called Islamic State.
But a source has told her the aircraft was flying at an altitude where it could not have been struck by something from the ground.
There is also no suggestion at present that Jihadis were involved.
Our correspondent adds that mechanical failure could also be considered. |

The notice boards at Pulkovo in Russia have reportedly not shown the arrival details for flight 7K 9269 from Sharm el-Sheikh. The board initially showed an estimated arrival time of 12:20 St. Petersburg time.

The Egyptian military told RT access to the crash site may be difficult for the press due to the volatile security situation in the Sinai. Large parts of the peninsula are dangerous due to the presence of militants, with only coastal areas in the north and south adequately guarded by security forces. |

Al-Ahram, the Egyptian state-owned news provider, has a report on its website about the crash which quotes a pilot saying it was due to a "technical failure".
The report says Ayman Al-Mokadem is heading a committee to monitor the crash's aftermath and quotes him saying the aircraft's pilot "sensed a technical failure and reported to the aviation authorities that he wanted to land at the nearest airport"l
The pilot appeared to crash while trying to land in Al-Arish's airport in North Sinai, Mr Mokadem said, according to the report.
