Betul tu Matz.  Tapi kenapa kawan you macam gitu?  Kan memang agama kita pun melarang kita membazir.  Makanan tu kan rezki, selagi boleh makan, makanlah.  Buang2 berdosa...

Tapi yang Chic perasan lah, selalunya orang yang riak dan suka cakap besar ni sebenarnya habuk pun tadak.  Its just keeping up appearances...:ah:

Undergrad sells herself for $100
My body was not worth anything

By Tan Mae Lynn

A SINGAPOREAN undergraduate led a secret life - attending university by day and prostituting herself by night.

In two months, she slept with about 20 men, she said.

Jenny (not her real name) charged $100 each time. But her clients would also have to pay for her cab fare to either the men's homes or hotels.

Jenny, who is in her early 20s, said she was initially drawn to these sleazy encounters because of her loneliness and depression.

She was also curious about sex and wanted extra cash.

'I never had sex before. I wanted to try out what is sex,' she said. 'I preferred to try it out with strangers rather than with friends.'

But there was little pleasure in her sexual experiences, she said.

'Most of the time I felt pain. Only once or twice I enjoyed it because the guys bothered to warm me up first.'

She said most of the men she slept with used condoms.

She also claimed she had been 'sabotaged' several times. Some of her clients would leave her waiting for hours or not show up, and a few would not pay after sex.

She said: 'To me, having sex with strangers didn't matter... My body was not worth anything.'

She said she has stopped offering sexual services.

Her main reason: 'It's not a good business. I feel bad whenever they waste my time and don't show up, or they don't pay.

'I always feel guilt, whenever I do it. I can't do it anymore because I'm constantly scared of getting caught. I feel pressurised thinking about it so it's better I stop.

'With some help, I'm starting to get back my self-esteem. I realise I shouldn't be feeling like I'm not worth it.'

Jenny claims her grades in school are acceptable - Bs and Cs.

A few close friends know what she did. But her family and classmates have no clue about it.

She said both her parents, who are in their 50s, are ill and not working.

Jenny wanted to earn her own keep so she would be less of a financial burden to them. Her financial stress and other problems led to depression.

About a year ago, she was lonely and wanted to talk to someone, so she decided to call a chatline. She chose a chatline over the Internet because she didn't have a computer at home at the time.

From there, she would exchange messages with male callers, informing them of her vital statistics, age and what she could do for them. If the callers were agreeable, they would exchange telephone numbers.

Jenny said she didn't lie to them.

'I tell them the truth about myself... that I'm plump, my actual height and weight.'

They would then talk and arrange a time and place to meet.

Usually, she said, she would meet the men at a hotel or in their homes. She has even been sneaked into their homes late at night.

The men were mostly in their 20s and 30s, and some were married.

Sometimes, after one customer, she would try to get another for the night.

Jenny said: 'I usually try to wait with a customer until the morning, because cab fares are cheaper. I can't take the bus because my leg gives me pain.'

Jenny is recovering from a broken leg and a broken bone in her spine, which nearly left her crippled. She is still able to walk with help.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

About a year ago, she had attempted suicide by jumping from her third-floor HDB flat.

The police confirmed the incident. Attempting suicide is a crime in Singapore. But the police told The New Paper that after considering her case, they decided to let her off with a stern warning.

When she was 17, she was diagnosed with major depression and borderline personality disorder. Since then, she said she has been admitted to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) at least 10 times. Each stay lasted at least three days.

She said she has been seeing a psychiatrist for six years, and has to take five different types of medication every day.

The New Paper contacted her psychiatrist but he declined to comment, citing patient confidentiality.

One of her friends from university said: 'When she told me about how she slept around for money I was very surprised and disappointed.

'Later, I realised she had problems and I warned her about the dangers of meeting strangers.'

To protect Jenny's identity, we are not naming her friend.

She added: 'She's not any different from any one around our age group. I think she resorted to this because she was going through a rough patch.'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jenny may be safe from the law, but she needs help

PROSTITUTING herself may be morally wrong, but in the eyes of the law, it's not illegal.

Criminal lawyer Luke Lee said: 'Prostitution (sexual services for payment of money or goods) is not an offence per se.'

However, he added: 'Soliciting for prostitution is an offence if done by someone other than the prostitute, that is pimping.

'Soliciting by the prostitute is an offence only if the soliciting is persistent and done in a 'public road or public place'. The Computer Misuse Act does not address this activity.'

Jenny may be safe from the law, but she needs to seek help.

Dr Brian Yeo, consultant psychiatrist at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre, said there are some sexual abuse victims who go into prostitution or engage in promiscuous sex to feel like they're 'taking care' of themselves. Others don't appear to them as being supportive.

'They feel sullied, like there's nothing more to lose, so they feel they might as well take advantage of the situation and make money out of it.

'It's not a good way of coping, but it's not uncommon,' Dr Yeo said.

However, Jenny's case is not without hope.

'At least she seems to be asserting some control over her life... she's in university and has also been seeking help,' he said.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you notice yourself or someone else feeling depressed...

IF there's something bothering you, there are people you can turn to. They can help you deal with stress or depression.

This is particularly important if you've been feeling down for a prolonged period.

Ms Rajeswari K, executive director of the Singapore Association for Mental Health, said that if you notice yourself or someone else feeling depressed, and if the depression continues for some time - for example about two weeks - you should seek professional advice.

Ms Rajeswari said: 'Sometimes, some people can cope with natural support such as that from family and friends.

'If they can carry out day-to-day functions, they may be coping. If day-to-day functions are affected, then they should seek professional help.'

It could just be a matter of talking it out, to find out if they have clinical depression, she added.

'There are a lot of places you can turn to. The person can go to any counselling centre to find out if it's something that will pass, or if it's an illness.

'Sometimes depression can result from the loss of a loved one, or loss of a job, or any crisis-induced event.'

And there's no reason to be embarrassed about seeking professional help. It's much like 'seeing a doctor for high blood pressure or any other illness'.

Some numbers those who need help can call are:

Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH) 1800-2837019, Monday through Fridays 9am - 6pm

Suicide Prevention and Crisis Helpline (Samaritans of Singapore) 1800-2214444, 24 Hours.

Dari new paper semalam.

Their 3 sons are wasting away

M'sian family struggle with kids' crippling illness

HE hardly has money to feed his seven children. Yet, recently, Mr Lun Wei Ping, 39, blew all of his savings on a TV set and a VCD player.

All the construction worker wanted was to put a smile on the pale faces of his three sick boys.

Jia Ming, 13, Jia Hong, 12, and Jia Jie, 7, are all suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder.

Jia Ming and Jia Hong can't even walk or stand up, while Jia Jie - still in the early stages of the illness - can still manage to stumble around their wooden house in Rawang in Selangor.

When a Guang Ming Daily reporter visited the family on Thursday, Jia Jie fell down every few steps that he took.

It was a pitiful sight.

But every time he stumbled, the determined little boy would pick himself up and continue.

Mr Lun's children were all born healthy.

He and his wife, Madam Huang Si Yue, 36, got married 14 years ago.

They have seven children - three girls, aged 14, 11, and 9, and four boys, aged 13, 12, 7 and 5 months.

Their woes started when Jia Hong was 2 years old.

Doctors discovered that he had two growths in his heart. They said the boy would be in a vegetative state if he was not operated on.

With money borrowed from his boss, Mr Lun sent Jia Hong for the operation. Nevertheless, the muscles in the boy's legs wasted away when he turned 9.

Four years after Jia Hong's operation, Jia Ming got a high fever. He was then 7 years old.

After he recovered, he appeared to be intellectually slower and his speech was affected, said Mr Lun.

He started stuttering and finally, like his brother, the muscles in his legs started to waste away.

The final blow came just five months ago, after the birth of their youngest child.

The family discovered that Jia Jie's legs were also losing their strength.

Unable to go to school, the boys lie or sit at home with nothing to do. They can only listen to their sisters' stories about school.

Desperate to make his boys happy, Mr Lun bought the TV set and VCD player. Now, despite the sad plight of the Lun boys, the house is often filled with music and laughter.

Still, the pressure on Mr Lun is immense.

As the sole breadwinner, his meagre income is hardly enough to pay for the weekly visits the three boys have to make to the hospital.

At his wits' end, he finally approached the Malaysian Chinese Association's welfare arm for help.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Soccer star also had disorder

MUSCULAR dystrophy is a genetic disorder characterised by progressive muscle wasting and weakness.

Some well-known public figures have muscular dystrophy, including British physicist Stephen Hawking and the late Malaysian soccer legend Mokhtar Dahari

Mokhtar died in July 1991.

The Lun boys have a variant - Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Boys begin to show signs of muscle weakness as early as age three.

The disease gradually weakens the voluntary muscles - those in the arms, legs and trunk.

DMD is said to run in their mother's family, reported China Press.
