And the 22-year-old Aaron is determined to shoulder the responsibilities well to help the team retain the gold medal.

Bowler on verge of winning first international title

Closing in: Sharon Koh is all smiles after rollling down 1,287 pins in the first block of eight games in the Masters Final of the Taiwan Open yesterd

PETALING JAYA: Youngster Sharon Koh is poised to win her first international bowling title after a sensational first block of eight games in the Masters Final of the Taiwan Open at Taichung yesterday.

Sharon, determined to make up for missing out on a title just two weeks ago, fired lines of 227-249-214-238-222-234-214-229 to finish top with a total score of 1,827 pinfalls.

Two weeks ago, Sharon抯 dream of winning her first international title went up in smoke when compatriot Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani defeated her for the Singapore Open title in the step-ladder finals.

This time, Sharon, who won the right to represent Malaysia in this year抯 AMF World Cup with an impressive showing in a selection trial last week, looks unbeatable.

Yesterday, she left second-placed Singaporean Geraldine Ng behind by 156 pins while Hong Kong抯 Chan Shuk Han trailed in third with 1,638 pinfalls.

Despite her good showing, team manager Cheah Ban Cheng said it was not Sharon抯 best.

揑t was a cruise for her. She is saving her best for tomorrow (today). We expect to see another strong showing from her in the next block,

Bid to end Thai jinx

PETALING JAYA: Thailand is seen as a jinxed territory for Malaysian bowling.

Malaysia have a relatively poor record in multi-sports carnivals held in Thailand and they will be looking at better fortunes at the SEA Games in December, setting themselves a four-gold target.

Malaysia's best record in the Games hosted by Thailand was a 2-3-0 haul in Chiang Mai in 1995. In the Games held in Bangkok in 1975 and 1984, Malaysia returned with a haul of 1-3-2 and 1-2-2 respectively.

Zandra: Among the gold-medal contenders in the SEA Games.

In the Asian Games in 1978 and 1998, the medal tally was 1-0-0 and 0-0-1 respectively.

Coach Holloway Cheah is confident that the team for the SEA Games this time will achieve the best results for Malaysia.

揙ur bowlers have not won more than two gold medals in a Games in Thailand. They say that Thailand is jinxed for us but I don't think so. It is all about hard work in training and commitment of the bowlers,

Poh Lai out of SEA Games reckoning

PETALING JAYA: A year of misery continued for bowler Choy Poh Lai when she was ruled out of the fight for a place in the team bound for the SEA Games in Thailand in December.

Chief coach Holloway Cheah said yesterday that Poh Lai is suffering pain in the knee cap.

揝he did not train last week. The doctor has advised her to rest and she is probably out of the running for a place in the squad for the SEA Games,
